Adder cockpit and ship design - not great!

Have to say the Adder cockpit is the worst one I've come across so far it seems to take the worst of all of the ships and combine them into one. I mean if the ship itself is pug ugly and as lame as hell, the cockpit seems to have been designed along the same principles - make it as rubbish as possible.

  • No view above just like the Hauler which gets to be a bit annoying after a time,
  • Absolutely no interesting decoration, lights or accompanyment at all, not even a bobblehead.
  • All the screens seem way to small compared to the superb Eagle and Sidewinder - are the holographic screens further away or something or is it my imagination?
  • The chair next to you is just sat there in the middle of the floor with nothing around it.
  • Not only that but the scrolling around the cockpit seems to be quite slow as well.

It just looks really lame, as if it was knocked up in a day. I would really appreciate Frontier relooking at this cockpit when they get a chance and taking a look at the Millenium Falcons cockpit or some other similar ship to see how it should really be done. I just cant wait to get shot of the ship tbh and I was looking forward to the Adder when I found out it was coming. But this Adder in the new game - it really is complete pants in every department and the fact it looks practically exactly the same as the Hauler just makes it so much worse.

What have you done to it other than created it as quickly as possible by the look of it? It was ten times better in Frontier Elite II. Please no more ships like this lets have some decent ships please for the next ten ships.

And whilst I'm on - please - external views!

Are you kidding? I think it's cute! It's like a minivan. Inside and out. It really needs fuzzy dice and a Garfield stuck on the window, though. XD

...that and its engines putter and swish and sound like a Jetsons car. <3

Well I admit I havent heard the engines yet but the Adder was originally quite a cool ship, quite hard edged and tough, now like you say it looks like a campervan and I for one hate it. But I think its the cockpits design that looks the worst.

I think the quality of the dashboard (to use car vehicle terminology) shows the kind of ship you are using. I fly the Adder for exploration and mining and it's just like driving a Mercedes Sprinter transit. The hauler is just a cheaper transit such as ford or vauxhal. The quality of the textures in the cabin really give both ships a level of cheapness which is perfect for their roles in this simulation.

They do have coffee cup holders though. Can't beat that.

I love my Adder!! It kicks ass, it's high maneuverability makes it awesome in taking down even asps and 1 type-9 even! I'm thinking of changing to a viper but I love it too much. I love the design as well, I would love if they added crew members to fill that chair though :). (If you've flew an anaconda it's worse, there are 2 empty chairs! had one in alpha...)

Yeah, I kinda like the cockpit too - it's got this cozy sort of fancy space-trucker feel to it. Though I do agree it could use a bit more detail.

I agree that from a gameplay PoV the cockpit is lacking, but the fidelity of the modelling is still top notch. It's just that it's a well modeled, low cost spaceship.

I see mine as one of those little Bedford Rascals....

Sounds great too, I think it hasn't got an engine, there are times it sounds like I have demonic possession in the engine bay
.
Not me in the pic just some random google pic...

I agree with the OP... it looks cheap and poorly thought out, however I think it's SUPPOSED to look that way. The Hauler's been likened to a transit van by the designers... which makes it's big brother the Adder a light lorry, designed to move stuff, not to be the height of design. It's well done, in fact the limited view above is what inspired me to upgrade to a Cobra as soon as I could. If it was perfect, why would you upgrade?

I strongly disagree . I love the Adder and its cockpit is one of my favourite.

"Absolutely no interesting decoration, lights or accompanyment at all, not even a bobblehead."

Are you kidding ? It has one of the best ambient lighting and design. I feel like I am flying a very nice designed shuttle from a high budget top sci-fi movie. :)

I don't mind the Adder. Kinda has that comfy feel to it, just needs some wood paneling and the drink holder. I do wonder what all the empty space is about around the cockpit. I'm not one for cramped, but utility is a must in space I would think. The lonely feeling I get when I look at the empty chair next to me sucks, lol.

I use my Adder as a smuggling/pirate/bounty hunting/trading ship. I also do some combat in it. Its a good all rounder if you upgrade it. The Cobra of course is a better all rounder, but I don't have the credits yet.

I agree about the feel of the cockpit, campervan with a dash of Volvo trucker, but I can live with it. I assume there's a manufacturer's design ethic in play here, though I haven't played any other ships of theirs; just a guess. What I really really don't like is the amount of glare off the dash in sunshine, it's way too bright, and it's hard to see the mining HUD at all sometimes. I think we could have had an exploring version, and then a mining version with a dark dash so that it would be much easier to grab those rocks in any lighting conditions.

The second thing is the FOV from the "right hand" window, which is identical to the FOV from the center line and shouldn't be. For example when you see the radiating lines from a hyperspace tunnel, they should be slightly shortened on the left and lengthened on the right, because you're observing from the right. Likewise a rock up close and center should appear to be slightly to the left.

Otherwise yes bring on the fluffy dice and can we have a sunshield with a holder for the Ray-Bans and the Yorkie Bar please.

I actually like the outside. Looks like a cute little hauling/exploring ship and I love the way it handles.

The cockpit isn't my favorite, but it fits with the Zorgon Peterson cockpit designs so it's what I would expect in one of their ships.

Calling the quality of the cockpit and the ship "Not Great" is inaccurate. It's perfect, in its own way. The ships in the game each have their own form and function and purpose, and more importantly, you have to think of it as if it is real life. You're essentially driving a beater. It's not meant to be sleek, and modern, and fancy, it's an old outdated minivan, and it looks lovely as such in my opinion. It gives it real character.
