Please please please....just teach me ONE thing...

....how to locate a specific trading commodity. If I wanted Tea for example, how can I find a system that sells it????

I tried these methods:

a) Fly to nearest Agriculture system, they will sell food, right? Nope, there are 3 such systems near me and they are all out of Tea.

b) Use Trade map, filter Tea and head to a system that is clearly shown exporting Tea. Nope, not only are the trade routes contradictory (the system I am at that is requesting Tea is shown to be an exporter!!), but all the other systems shown as exporting Tea have none.

What the hell? Please tell me how to find Tea. Right now trading is next to useless as there is no demand, so Hauling missions are the only thing keeping me going. Half the time I am failing these because a simple resource like Tea can't be found in the area, and the tools to help me find it don't seem to work. Please please help before I ragequit this damn game.

I have been pretty much avoiding Trading on commodities right now. In my opinion the info in the game is broken and makes no sense. There are people out there making money with it, but if you can't trust the info, what's the point.

I'm making ok coin though bounty hunting missions right now and having a "blast". ;-)

Go to the commodities market of the station you are in.
Check for the product, and there will be a list of 'Imported From' systems where you can buy it from.

It it's not imported there, then you need to find a system where it is.

Your methods seem sound to me.
Sometimes missions to supply stuff want the stuff that just aint there and you have to look further afield and sometimes give up the mission (then you'll find tea - betcha! the Universe should be called the Perverse)

It's better to only accept those kind of missions if you already know a source. Keep your eyes peeled when trading, and make notes of where the hot commodities are available.

The popular ones are: Tea, coffee, algae, auto-fabricators, robotics, coltan, bertrandite, palladium, platinum, imperial slaves - probably a few others.

Ok I will give this a go, but won't the systems on that import list be the same ones shown on the Galaxy Map as exporters?

And yeah to the guy above, I stumble on a crap-ton of Tea right after the mission expires - and from a system that is not being shown as an exporter. ;P

  1. Pull up the Galaxy map
  2. Go to the View tab
  3. Ensure Show Trade Routes is checked
  4. Click "Clear"
  5. Click on the checkbox next to the specific material you want

If the commodity is available from a system you have trade data on, you will see a line to that system, with a pulsing moving blob moving away from the system with the commodity

it seems simplistic to say and probably goes against teh grain for many but designing and using your own access database with an excel spreadsheet front end is a good way to go - being a bit of a geek I enjoy it

Takes about 5 mins to fully populate and then you can prepare a macro or do a search to tell you whihc statios you have visied that have Tea (or whatever)

It is disappointing to think that a pen and paper is going to be a superior trade tool to all the programming that must have gone into that Galaxy map....

Kitira, what you described is exactly how I am trying to locate exporters, but the map is LYING to me repeatedly.

I was looking for personal weapons for a while. if you don't have trade data.. you wont see the trade arrows. so buy trade data for 100 in the nearbys or visit them.
I visited a station that the galaxy map indicated had personal weapons. the first sation in the system map said they exported it.
I got there.. realised it was an industrial system.. and personal weapons is a High tech commodity..
I know some stations share economy types.. i.e. indi / refine.. or agri /idi
I found some lines for weapons coming out of a high tech place.. and eventually found a station selling them. but it wasn't the first station I tried..
it was in an outpost.
theoretically , you should be able to filter for tea. in the map. and then if its coming from an agri system. check the system view for the agri station.. and head there.
if there are multiple stations youll have to try all of them to find the tea.

I used to think that mission data was also being shown in trade arrows.. i.e. if theres a mission to take tea to another station .. youll see arrows even if the tea is unavailable in commoditys
maybe it still is. ive complained about it.. raise a ticket.
taking screenshots of commodity prices helps .. ( for me this breaks immersion with the game.. so the pilots log feature we were supposed to be getting cant come quick enough )

It's worth noting that not all stations in a system will offer the same goods. There are cases where the prices are screwy (importer paying less than exporter sells at), but to the best of my knowledge, if the map/trade data claims an export, at least one station in that system will at least sell it (not necessarily at a great price, though FD are looking into this).

Also check the commodity market where you're docked.
For example, in Imperial space they often offer a mission to deliver Imperial Slaves - they are almost always for sale in that market.
That's an instant mission done + rep + 20k profit in all likelyhood.
