Please stop pushing out patches in the multiple GB's!

I had the same problem, but it dissapeared after reinstalling the latest version of the installer. Maybe give it a shot?

Hi,
Love the game so far, but my biggest complaint is that the patches put out are in the order of multiple gigabytes! It seems like it's downloading the entire game again every time a patch is out.

Pretty much every night this week I've got home from work, spent the evening with the missus doing mundane life things all the while looking forward to playing Elite when I'm done, only to discover a massive patch needs to be downloaded, leading me to playing something else for the evening.

My connection is 10MBit (1mb/s if I'm lucky) so it's not too bad, but when I have 2 hours a night to play, and the patches take 1:30 or beyond to download, it leaves me with no time.

I don't think it's acceptable to keep pumping out giant patches, so please consider breaking things up a bit for those of us who can't get fibre in their area. :)

Don't know about the size of the patches, but I do know they can be slow (not experienced slowness since live, but YMMV)

A genuine suggestion is to start the patching when you first get in from work, then spend time with your family while it's downloading. If I know a patch is out (and they've been out every day since live so far) that's generally what I do, fire up my PC to start any upgrade and then forget about it (or at least put it to the back of my mind :D ) until the kids are in bed and I have some time to play.

all fair points :)
But you got it wrong and posting big headlines and misinformation will get you these replies, next time do your homework before coming out guns blazing.

I can't know something is wrong until I speak up and see how other's are getting on.

The replies to this thread have mostly been hostile, not what I expected at all.

Yes I was mistaken and I apologise, but it was preventing me from playing a game I'd just bought and I was (rightfully) frustrated.

Just a suggestion, as your evening life is almost a carbon copy of mine, but I have made a habit of getting home and first off I switch on my PC and fire up ED to leave it patching before then going off to do all the usual bedtime routine for kids etc etc. But also have to agree with others here that the patches are minimal.

If anything it doesn't take long enough. I like to sit down and sip my coffee, maybe check the ED forum, you know general relaxation and prepare mentally for the upcoming gaming session while the patch is downloading. But is always just BAM, done in 1 minute :(

I hope they increase the size, I can't even get my coffee from downstairs before it's done atm.
Can't have the game sitting there idle for that long !

omg ... and that got sniped lmao

Now ya see, this is what is wrong with the boards. Let us not deride his connection, ask him to stop whining, etc. etc. etc. Instead, let us help him find a solution.

I too am in your shoes. Here is the solution I have found:

I get home from work, give the missus a kiss, and discreetly make my way to the computer where I log in to the launcher. If there is and upgrade button, I press it, minimize the window, and go about my nightly routine until it is game time. This maximises my playing time and still gives me time to reduce aggro from wife 1.0! ;)

Clearly there's another issue here anyway and it looks like it's redownloading the game each time, perhaps my local install has corrupt files or something.

The speed of your internet could be a major cause of the long download times. You say you have 10Mbit line, but it's downloading around 1Mb speed?
Have you tried plugging your router in at the master socket (where the phone line enters the house) ? If the speed there is much higher (test using speedtest.net), then there are ways to improve the speed of your line (possibly for no cost).
.
The reason I ask is that I was paying for 20Mb service & only ever got between 0.5 and 1.5 speed for 18 months, until I followed the advice of some telecom engineers/enthusiasts. I felt like a right idiot when I raised my speed to 9Mb at no cost, just a bit of re-wiring.
.
If you do try plugging into your master socket to test this, do not use the socket that you can see on the outside of the box. Remove the half cover, and plug directly into the socket inside there for the test.

Every patch this week has been really small, I don't think it has even exceeded 100 MB in total. Are you sure your installation isn't corrupted and is downloading the game each time? The game is only 3.5 GB right now...

Same here.... This is what I do!

Thanks for the advice.

Thinking about it, my line is technically 12mbit, which would mean 1mb/s would be about right. It seems to be consistently downloading at about 0.7, so ~700k/sec, so I can't complain about the speed really.

Again, I think it's an installation issue that I hadn't considered when making the initial post.

Thanks to those helpful replies guys. Without chatting to others I had no way of knowing everyone wasn't experiencing the same. :)

really ?
How about the headline "How big was this download" or "how fast did you download the patch in?" instead of "Please stop pushing out patches in the multiple GB's" !

i know what you mean about only having a limited time to play, but do what i do, Get home say hello to the wife and kids, turn on the PC and start patching the game, walk away and cook dinner / eat dinner and spend time with the family, then when i go back to the PC the game is patch and i can start playing.

also if you think this game is patch heavy you should see the size of the start citizen patch's !!!

Gleep

Happy hunting commanders

Sounds like something odd going on with your installation, my net connection is messed up just now and am only getting 560kbps (half a meg) download, and the last patch 1.03 took a few mins, once it had synced etc. While updating next time, you could run Resource Monitor and check the tick box for EDLauncher, and monitor what it's up to, network etc.
