Hi,
Love the game so far, but my biggest complaint is that the patches put out are in the order of multiple gigabytes! It seems like it's downloading the entire game again every time a patch is out.
Pretty much every night this week I've got home from work, spent the evening with the missus doing mundane life things all the while looking forward to playing Elite when I'm done, only to discover a massive patch needs to be downloaded, leading me to playing something else for the evening.
My connection is 10MBit (1mb/s if I'm lucky) so it's not too bad, but when I have 2 hours a night to play, and the patches take 1:30 or beyond to download, it leaves me with no time.
I don't think it's acceptable to keep pumping out giant patches, so please consider breaking things up a bit for those of us who can't get fibre in their area.![]()
all fair points
But you got it wrong and posting big headlines and misinformation will get you these replies, next time do your homework before coming out guns blazing.
Clearly there's another issue here anyway and it looks like it's redownloading the game each time, perhaps my local install has corrupt files or something.
Just a suggestion, as your evening life is almost a carbon copy of mine, but I have made a habit of getting home and first off I switch on my PC and fire up ED to leave it patching before then going off to do all the usual bedtime routine for kids etc etc. But also have to agree with others here that the patches are minimal.
The speed of your internet could be a major cause of the long download times. You say you have 10Mbit line, but it's downloading around 1Mb speed?
Have you tried plugging your router in at the master socket (where the phone line enters the house) ? If the speed there is much higher (test using speedtest.net), then there are ways to improve the speed of your line (possibly for no cost).
.
The reason I ask is that I was paying for 20Mb service & only ever got between 0.5 and 1.5 speed for 18 months, until I followed the advice of some telecom engineers/enthusiasts. I felt like a right idiot when I raised my speed to 9Mb at no cost, just a bit of re-wiring.
.
If you do try plugging into your master socket to test this, do not use the socket that you can see on the outside of the box. Remove the half cover, and plug directly into the socket inside there for the test.
I can't know something is wrong until I speak up and see how other's are getting on.
The replies to this thread have mostly been hostile, not what I expected at all.
Yes I was mistaken and I apologise, but it was preventing me from playing a game I'd just bought and I was (rightfully) frustrated.
Yeah well imagine downloading stuff on a 5.6k modem! (and that was fairly quick back in the day!)
.....This maximises my playing time and still gives me time to reduce aggro from wife 1.0!![]()
