Exploration is a waste of time

Started exploring a while ago and did 327 systems now for the moment I am somewhere in Deep Space 500Ly from Sol heading for a distant Nebula already passed the Pleiadas Nebula so really in uncharterd space. I love it discovering new things

I don't mind it, got quite a few to cash in (one is 25K for a 6 planet system which involved travelling no further out from its sun that 1,000Ls) and I've a few others to finish scanning. It's not the most exciting task but you can pick up quite a few USSs and get the odd fight. Just another way of making money.

i like exploring because it is fun.
never cared about money factor.
you go on a hike, spend money on travel and all, not for the end money gain but satisfaction for exploring new areas. thats how i am taking this exploration thing here!

I did a good deal of trading in gamma, but had always intended this as a route to deep space exploring.

3 days ago I jumped in. Fringe system to the California in a roundabout route. Advanced discovery scanner to ping everything, and then if the system looked promising, a good dig around with a detail scanner. Anything from 5 to 60 minutes for a system.

Returned last night.
Reckon I covered over 2000ly.
Systems explored - 100+
Return 1.2 million after costs.
Return for that time trading probably 10 million now rares are dead.

Excrements given at the disparity - none.

Rerigged the asp, and back out again. This time with a bigger goal.
I love it, but I would like there to be better recognition/news feed in game.

BTW only 1 earth like found. Lots of water world's. Lots of terraformers. A twin black hole system (not the well known one).

I think exploring is a very individual thing.

I'm seriously considering going off into the wilds, forever, with a minimum ship, drop the cargo bay, add a fuel scoop and just do that eternally in the game. See how far I can get in the game's lifetime ;)

Please factor in a return trip or two ... us not-so-explorer types would love to see whats out there ;)

I'm an explorer, and to be honest, i'm making tons of cash (pending a return to civilized space) and having lots of fun.

Just found a system with several high metal planets, and earthlike, and a water world.... i shiver in anitci...... pation, at how much that baby is going to net me.

Well going to plan a long journey tonight. Gonna do it over the weekend.
Got my fuel scoop and lots of coffe.

You also get rep for exploring. According to the rep list that i cant find right now (which showed almost all activities add to rep). I just dont know whos rep you're gaining.

Devastat I been exploring for 6+ hours yesterday. And im eager to get home and explore another 6 or more. Its not for everybody. Maybe its on my genes being portuguese and all. Exploration is awesome.

Ok come back tomorrow after exploring another 6 hours and let me know if you are still as enthusiastic ;)

why is everyone in such a rush to make as much money as fast as possible?

Obviously to get into biggest ship with the best equipment, so they have a reason to whine about missing end-game content *rolleyes*

Speaking for myself, the main reason to play this game was to go out and explore the universe, so I started trading to get a better ship. After a while I thought about mining to get a better ship, so I started with mining..
Then I said screw it and got me a fuel scope and some better guns (just in case) and a good FSD (12+ly ) and set a long route into a random direction.

Payout for exploration might not be the best moneywise, but who cares.. my Sidewinder works well so far..

Robert Scott, two years odd trying to be the first man to the South Pole. Gets there to find some Norwegian chap has beaten him to it. Dies just before making it back to base. Exploring; complete waste of time.

Well... it that particular case, I would have to agree with the OP.
But generally speaking, at least in 3300, exploration is interesting, fun, educational, occasionally exciting, and reasonably profitable. :)
At least it can be.

This little glimpse is why I love exploration: to see things so strange and beautiful and unusual out there that you wouldn't be able to see in the back garden that is civilised space. It's simply a case of going out there. :)

Well, if this thread was form of exploration, I might agree. But as far as the game goes, there a slipper slope the OP may fall into where eventually everything he does is going to be a waste of time. Even going on the internet.

I saw my first Brown Dwarf last night, it was so incredible in it's low glow purple madness. Then I found VEGA, but now have to explore the nearby system to find the story to get the Permit to enter. :)

Game on

If you see Elite Dangerous as a game all about making money then Exploring isn't currently going to be for you. However, until you explore you won't find anything interesting. However, given that exploring is one of the things you can gain Elite Status for, I have every confidence that there will be interesting things to find. This is what I'm doing at the moment and it's proving very entertaining. You still get USS's popping up in systems a long way outside the Frontier of explored space. As the systems are all Anarchy you can happily behave as badly as you want without any fear of recriminations. I normally make a several thousands with a Kill Warrant scanner in each new system I find.

Exploring's great! I'm 1500ly out now, aiming towards galactic core to come out on the other side of the galaxy.

Once you see the distortion caused to a star by a near orbiting black hole, or a star spinning at silly speeds, you discover the fun :)

Come back next week. Once you've seen all of this.

This is like visiting a museum every single day. I mean eventually you will have seen it all.
