The most infuriating and difficult game ever.

I think you're too used to non twitch based gaming that actually requires skill, not an amazing stamina in your right finger..

Actually the game is a bit easy to the point of boredom (or that could be that I've experience everything other than conflict zones).

I'd like to invite Xcodan, or any others that have unanswered control or gameplay questions to feel free to PM me, and I'll give help if I can. I do not have a Rift, so I can't help there, but I use TrackIR, and X52 hotas, and have been a backer since June.

One thing to note about EVE, is that those who play it are normally long time players, so their new experience with it was 3, 4 etc years ago. They've acclimatized, new things have been added over those years, they adjust, so the overall complexity that is EVE today they've adjusted to in increments. I don't think Elite is more complex than EVE, I think it offers much more "instant gratification", just that being a game where you actually control your ship rather than point and click, there is more room for error, and everything feels much more immediate.

1 valid point I see in the thread is the social / multi-player chat stuff. You do feel a little isolated. I do think FD can easily deliver seeing how quickly they can fix some of their stuff.

Early 2015 will hopefully bring a more multiplayer oriented update.

  • The map is almost impossible to navigate in the rift. Believe me I've watched enough demonstrations and tried enough keybinds but I cannot get any information on any systems.
  • Map is laggy and you never know if you're seeing all the trade routes.
  • There's no information about systems you're looking at (how many stations, what's the local population of pilots to avoid major jump lag).
  • It's totally hit and miss whether you can navigate to the next system. Sometimes there's good trade routes but turns out it's like 50 hops away, even though the map shows it's right next door.
  • There's no apparent rationale behind why you can plot a course. I tried to get to Lave (being a big time supporter back in '84). I can't get there and I've no idea why.
  • You think you've got it sorted out, buy some cargo, take off, jump. Pick a random station because you have no idea what's there until you get there. Only to find you can't get in (Docking request denied x 40). Log out and back in to dock.
  • Interdiction's are far too common, sometimes taking five minutes of staring at a full green bar only to have to log out and back in again to get out of it.
  • Colour scheme needs changing so you can actually see anything. Set it green, great but then you can't figure out what the map is trying to tell you.
  • Most of the time I can't even figure out where I need to land and crash into the station because it's back against black. Ship lights are no help at all.
  • There's no way of communicating with people to get any help from anyone. You're on your own commander.
1: The map is pretty easy to navigate, you just have to use a mouse and keyboard to do so. I gave up on using my x52 for the map because it's not really doable at this time, but with mouse and keyboard it's easy peasy
2: I've never had map lag.
3: There's information about a lot of systems you look at, they just have to be pretty busy systems. The whole "system view" button exists for a reason. The smaller systems require you to discover information about them.
4: "It's totally hit and miss whether you can navigate to the next system." No, it's not. Your jump range is too short. If you're flying the sidewinder or any of the early ships that have a small jump range, that's why. It's clearly visible when you look at your ship's status when docked in "outfitting." Buying an upgraded FSD increases your jump range, and buying thrusters or reducing mass can also do the same.
5: "Only to find you can't get in (docking request denied x50)" This isn't a glitch, you don't need to log back out and in. Instead of going to a station, you went to an outpost, and outposts only have 3 or 4 landing pads. It's denying you because those landing pads are full. On the system map, stations and outposts are differentiated by their icon, stations being sorta cubey shaped, outposts looking like a telephone pole. Stations have anywhere upwards of 30 docking ports, and i've never been denied at a station except for due to crime or being too far away
6: "Interdictions are far too common" You're using an x52 pro. I am too. It's very, very easy to avoid interdiction using a joystick. I've never been interdicted unless I willingly submitted so far.
7: "Set it green, great, but then you can't figure out what the map is telling you" What the heck are you talking about?
8: "Most of the time you can't even figure out where to land." The station tells you "Land on this docking port." You orbit around the station until you find that specific port, and then land. Pretty easy, never had any problems
9: Okay, this is actually a problem and we've been complaining about it since release. Supposedly they're gonna be working on improved communication soon but I haven't seen a lot of communication with that

I'm not blindly defending the game, i'm really irritated with a lot of the flaws, lack of content, and bugs in a "1.0" release, but almost everything you stated there is just a problem on your end of not understanding. Also it sounds like you might have a tiny monitor if you're having problems seeing things.

You thought Eve had a steep learning curve? Think again.

I played Eve for a lot of years but it didn't take me three days of battling the game mechanics and rage quitting before I got hold of it. I'm starting to think it was a mistake to invest so heavily in this before knowing enough about it (DK2 + X52 Pro).

I've lost five ships, made not a single penny, shot one NPC and I'm pretty much done with it I think.

Three days, zero progress. Too frustrated.

Regards,

Long time Eve player.

"Skill training not completed"

You can't enjoy the whole meal with one bite. I never even heard of this game and its history until about three weeks before release. Be patient and learn slowly but surely. Spent those first weeks in the combat tutorial. After this time I became about as adept as a noobie could be. Spent a couple of days playtime in the launching/docking and hypserapce tutorials before entering the actual game. No rush. Made forty two thousand credits on my first bounty job. Is that good? I don't even know. Enjoying the wonderment of it all. And part of it is not knowing how it all works. I make small goals and try to learn something new each session I play instead of trying to tackle everything at one time. Take a patient approach to this deal and avoid the frustration.

This post has to be the single best example of why FD need to get some kind of written manual out right now and post it on the launcher with big letters. Copying it to the Forums as a sticky would be a good idea too. New players should not have to go looking for how to do basic stuff. It should be put right in front of their faces so it is the FIRST thing they see when logging on.

So many of you players who want everything handed to you... I hate to say this but the forums are where players in this sort of game come to learn not a manual from the developers. This game, and the ones that proceeded it are about personal growth, learning and figuring things out all while finding what you enjoy - not what the game tells you to enjoy.

Imagine yourself as a billionaire who gets to explore space - forget about measuring yourself against others and simply go forth and discover - once you let go of other mmo mindsets and embrace this you'll enjoy it a lot more, or you'll find it's just not for you.

I wish you good tidings and merry explorations.

Acier.

PS - I played Eve for ages and while I loved it - this game is not that game and as such needs to be looked at through a different lens. Remember back to when you got your first cruiser and then lost it in Eve, didn't feel great then and doesn't feel great here either - but you are learning.

Honestly, I couldn't disagree more. I had no problem figuring everything out and I'm no genius. I do, however, really like that there's little to no hand-holding (so to speak).

I've lost one ship in about 60 hours of gameplay and that was because I got murderized by system authorities because I didn't know quite how shields worked.

I suspect the real issue is he's trying to play it using the Rift. He should try it without in order to get acquainted with the game's nuances before using it.

Its funny how everyone is different. I find eve quite daunting and feel the learning curve of the x games to be more of a cliff and yet elite I find quite natural.

So far I have only ruined 1 ship and I am no crack shot pilot.

Stick with it it will click. X55 and rift user here too :)

Same here. I'm about as smart as a bag of hammers and I get along just fine.

I get that people like to go in blind, but there is no downside to accommodating players who don't, but there is a massive downside to not doing it. As evidence I present the forums..
