Viper anyone?

Definitely get the Viper, you need 3M+cr to get it fully specced though.
My tooled-up Viper is my favourite ship so far, although I haven't flown anything more expensive than a Type 6 yet.

Viper is a great ship but outfitting it becomes VERY expensive. Medium gimballed multicannons are 57k each for example.

Your fuel costs will be higher too.

Consider switched to the Eagle first. Fit it with a good power plant, capacitors and your personal choice of weaponry (mine is triple beam lasers) and use that to earn more for the Viper.

The maneuverability and extra weapon means you will be taking bounties much faster in the Eagle so that Viper will not be so far away.
As someone currently flying a Viper, I love Eagles, probably even more than the Viper seeing that I'm a better Eagle pilot. The Eagle is brilliantly crafted and a skilled Eagle pilot will always beat a subpar Viper pilot (such as myself and a surprising majority of Viper pilots). It is the Hurricane to the Viper's Spitfire, but there were plenty of Hurricane aces along side the many Spitfire aces in World War II.

This is exactly the route I plan to take, but all I have atm is is a reasonably pimped out Hauler and 130k. What's the starting budget for the Adder endeavor?

If you sell the Hauler you'll be able to upgrade the Adder pretty decently.

I'd want more than 180K before buying a Viper I think.

As many weapons as the cobra and the fastest ship In the game.

Cobra is actually faster (at least going forward).

you can get it up to 10-11ly

15.3 Ly jump range on my combat Viper. Ferry range (dumping guns and other excess weight to maximize long distance travel efficiency) is about 17-18 Ly.

Your fuel costs will be higher too.

A decent fuel scoop will pay for itself in a dozen hours.

I'd advise waiting until you have about 1.2million as it needs a decent FSD , thrusters, power plant and distributor.

Yeah, a million creds is where the Viper starts to feel right, and my optimal Viper is 3-4 mill.

The main reason I sold my Freagle and went for a Viper was because of the country flag paint job. At first was hard getting used to the reduced manoeuvrability but now I have to say the Viper is a very nice small fighter. And it sounds just great, it's the Shelby GT500 in space.

Short answer: No !

Long answer: the Viper has suffered many nerf that makes it a sad ship really, it's speed is not that impressive, it's maneuverability is average, and it's weapons are normal, this ship is power starving, few and small internals, every time you will upgrade it well you will cry about the weight punishment, the fuel consumption is extremely high so fuel scoop mandatory, the Jump range is bad, the fuel tank is very small, the efficiency/cost ratio is bad, ho and i was talking about the viper fully upgraded that worth 3 million of course, do not even think about using it stock you better keep your sidewinder/eagle.

My advice for you: Buy the baby love ship of FRONTIER, the ultimate ship that can do everything better than any other ship, the king of the king of the most OP ships you will ever see for the cheap cost, aka COBRA

i was flying an eagle and upgraded to viper. I have around 400bounties now. Viper fully upgraded. 2 shield cell banks.

The viper just can not die. only way to die is to crash on something without shields or run out of air. you dictate the battles. all you need to do to get away is all pips on engines and 1-2 boosts.no npc can catch you.
I have made 1milion in 1 nav beacon without getting out. hull 100%. intense battles but it never spawned that many anacondas and pythons again. one anaconda gave 160k? somewhere around that,
love this ship.

edit: i use 4 pulse lasers, 2 medium fixed, and 2xclass 1 gimbaled.

i have not tried a cobra yet, but you sir make me want to try one. i might save a few millions and buy one to test it

The Viper only had one significant nerf as far back as I can remember.

It's boost speed is second only to the Cobra, while it's acceleration, lateral, and vertical thrust are the best you'll find. It's only weakness, as far as maneuverability goes, is it's relatively poor pitch rate.

It has much better hardpoint placement than the Cobra. It's not starving for power either.

Cobra is a damn good ship, and is truly multi-role.

Don't believe those who tell you the Cobra is unquestionably the superior combatant however, as things are no where near as clear cut.

Viper

So I have a Sidewinder fully kitted and 180k banked, should I get a Viper?
all I do is kill wanted for bounty.

any problems with the Viper, should I skip it?

I have a Viper and its is worth the money, as others have mentioned it is a good bounty hunters ship to start off with.
Buy better weapons, if you deck it out with better equipment you will find it is a great ship.

trust me bro the Viper has absolutely nothing over a Cobra, did you knew that the software of FRONTIER is called Cobra ? or the very first ship of the old Elite game was a Cobra ?

now you can understand why the Cobra is and will always be the most cheated and OP ship you will ever see for 300k, the viper is like dirt beside it

Didn't like it at first, not even when it was ridiculously OP in beta 1. However, now I have a Viper for smuggling (using an Asp for the rest) - the speed is unmatched and it's a bit harder to hit than a barn door (cobra) and unlike the cobra, it's not obsoleted by the Asp.
Besides I like the hardpoint placement (hate using gimballed weapons, which is almost a necessity on the cobra due to lack of a convergence slider).

wrong, you save a lot of time/money by waiting one more hour to buy a Cobra who is Combat ready when you buy it stock, who is able to upgrade everything without weight punishment, is not power starving, tanky as hell, with a lot of cargo and big internals, better speed and the same weapons, and great jump range.

the Cobra has both a lot better efficiency/Cost and earning money potential.

there is absolutely nothing to discuss here, no reason to ever buy a viper over a cobra, and if you made this mistake, there is no reason to not sell your viper for cobra right after.

Ho yea sorry, it has two things:

- it's natural beauty
- it's wonderful sounds

And if combat is what you really want, FAR superior hardpoint placement for fixed weapon convergence, which makes a HUGE difference if you're hunting with fixed alpha strike weapons.
