So go and sit between the two stars in close orbit, point at galactic center and you will see some dark clouds ABOVE galactic center, point to 2 o'clock and up till the galactic center is behind your dash, then fly straight!

I find it helpful to put a acetate sheet on the central monitor and write over dots with a marker. If the dot moves, it's worth investigating.

+rep for adapting the method astronomers have long used for finding moving things (overlay two photographic plates, are there any dots that don't precisely line up?)

I had troubles looking for a neutron star. I only found it due to an NPC entering the system and travelling in an odd direction. I followed it until the light he was heading towards started to move at a different speed from the background stars.

If there are other ships in the system head in there direction if your scanner shows no planets or stars. They will show up eventually.
