If the kill didn't register, the mission timer should still be running. Just to be sure we're on the same page here.
The bulletin boards were pretty empty today for some reason. Was hard pressed to find anything. And certainly nothing beyond Earl.
Serf, Squire, Knight, Baron, Count... from memory.
Edit: And Lord. I think before Baron. After a second thought.

I found the original Frontier: Elite II titles, the online manual was a bit hard to read though, due to formatting:
Outsider, Serf, Master, Sir, Squire, Lord, Baron, Viscount, Count, Earl, Marquis, Duke, Prince.
Edit: Checked against the original Amiga manual. Hah!

None, Private, Corporal, Sergeant, Sergeant-Major, Major, Colonel, Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, Captain, Commodore, Rear Admiral, Admiral.

I am friendly with empire too and I got a whole bunch of earl missions today - so many in fact that I got picky and chose the one with less pirates to kill (it ain't a noble's job to spend time hunting scum after all).
I'm a Count.

When you get to Earl, all the dirty work is hidden from sight, because nobility is like that.
As for the cash, sell yourself as a slave, and work for 10 years in the mines, then get away by some intricate plot where you save some nobelman/woman from assassination, so they can release you with a full bank account. That always seems to do the trick. At which point you get the credits, and can live happily forever after in the clipper. Which won't be for that long, the mines are not very good for the lungs... *cough*

Well, since I've got the rank for the ship I want I'm backing off from rank missions for now. Going back to focus on gathering coin. If I get any more ranks I'll let you know.

I did the opposite, since one kill counts towards all the missions, I picked up 3. A 5-kill, 5-kill and 7 kill missions. Killed 7, turned in all 3 for earl + an extra 100k for the other 2 missions. If you're going to be hunting might as well stock up.
