Is this thread suggesting what exists now is a complete game?

Enough with treating game discussion like politics. This thread is an exorcise in rhetoric, nothing more.

I think the poll results 'thus far' speaks volumes. The majority aren't happy with how easy the game is mechanically.. not the earning capacity, not those stupid interdiction and associated mini game but how riciculous it's all become. Elite Anaconda vs Viper... In what universe would you stand a chance, unless your name is Obi Wan.

Obi Wan was weak and should have embraced his anger like Darth Bane.... ;)

Completely off topic, but doesn't the faster smaller one eat the bigger slower anyday? If the small one can fly, that is.

Elite rated Anaconda...

It's all pointless banter anyhoo, let's see if the Devs can tweak it a tad so it's a little less rainbows and lollipops out there in the black.

wow so you are a backer and a 84r as you say that means you have final say over a game, that frankly needs to move with the times not still be back in the 80;s hence why they trying to add more add this add that, they have to cater for everyone not just people who think it was for them, i see this a lot on the forum, i am a backer, i played the original so my view is so much better then yours,

i played the original elite back in the day, and i am sorry to say it needs to move forward, you can expect it to remain the same, it will die a slow death, hence why they want to add so much more to it, at the moment i wont play it, i own it, but it just mine bounty hunt and explore, looks beautiful but it still the same as yesteryear, whats the use of living in the past when computers can do so much more,

great work by the devs, but get off yea high horse , the game needs to more forward, it needs to bring in new players to keep it alive, thinking that the older generation is all the game needs is selfish thinking

I assume that FE2/FFE veterans do qualify as 84ers, since we are definitely not newcomers.
Maybe you should replace "84er" with "series veteran"?

Ridiculous poll. Not even an attempt to make it unbias in wording or content. Absolutely shocking effort, Sir.

Affectionately,

JAD.

On my second day playing I killed an Expert Cobra III in my Sidey (upgraded a bit), nice 16K bounty, I did have the police distracting his fire though which did help. But I have played the combat tutorials solid for a month before as this is all I could play, so in all fairness I am quite good at the combat stuff.

Later on that week (last week) I was chasing one of these 150K bounty pirates and I found him, he was Elite and in an Annaconda, I was in my almost fully upgraded Eagle, he came right at me saying he was going to 'Pick my bones Clean' I poo'd my pants hit FSD quick, put 4 pips to shields, hit Boost and ran with his missiles flying after me! I just entered super cruise before he hit me. I would not say the game is easy at all! Other times I have had to flee against a couple of sideys as when there are more than one of them they are definetly more difficult, I am happy to take on a cobra in my Eagle and also the huge cargo ships, i have destroyed loads (3 maybe) of them, takes ages but is easy and it should be, the Eagle is a fighter after all.

I am very cautious now in battle, I will only attack 2 at most and only if they are marked as harmless or something else not higher than competent.

Note: I amswered the Poll saying I didnt want the game changed to make noobs happier. Not, to say i was unhappy how easy the game was, so please dont put your words into my mouth. I think the game should be improved continually to make everyone happy. I dont see this 'them and us' that you (some of you) Backers see. The game is released now, you are now just a player the same as the rest of us so get over it, your day is done, welcome to the player collective! Lets work together to make this game great.

No suitable answer for me.

My answer is: Listen to your playerbase's feedback, but never compromise your vision in doing so. Doesn't matter if its the newbies or the oldies giving the feedback.

Stupid poll is stupid. I started playing elite in 93 on the Amiga, wouldn't even know where to vote here.

I find this whole "I'm an 84er, my opinion is worth more" behavior really childish.

I mean, as an 84er, you should expect a bit a more grown up attitude than that.

84er was only a place holder to see if you played the original elite, Elite frontier or not, nothing else, dont take it to heart. :S

Though I agree with some of the points on the initial post I don't think a Poll is necessary and what has been implemented is poor.

I'm an 84'er but never got into 'Elite 2 and 3' (age, girls, bikes who knows why?). Do I want it to be exactly like a BBC Micro game? No. Do I want it to draw on previous heritage for inspiration whilst bringing visuals up to date and updateing/introducing new concepts? Yes.

I'm enjoying the game (joined at Beta) and yes they're are always going to be parts I don't particularly like. That's normal, right?

But has such an early access to the game (maybe targeting 'original' players) through its development led to a more poloarized view point? Should FD just have made the game and delivered it (as do many/most titles do still)?

Biased poll options. I'm a new player, I think they should make a modern and vastly expanded game rather than a game from the 1980's but equally it should be a hard and challenging game. You might as well had made a poll saying "vote here if players from 1984 are the best eva and Vote here if you're a pathetic newcomer who doesn't know what he's talking about.

Well I hate to break it to you.. But there are a grand number of newcomers who haven't a clue about Elite lore or why things are the way they are. Otherwise they wouldn't ask for docking to be easier with larger entrances, or that markets should openly share their data with other stations, etc. So yeah, many newcomers don't know enough about Elite. This doesn't mean that they should not be listened to but to base radical changes on a newcomer's discomfort is trampling over what Elite is all about.

The problem with today's way of thinking is that people are under the impression that everyone's opinion matters, when in fact, this is seldom the case.
There are general opinions, there are uneducated opinions, there are clueless opinions and there are educated well founded opinions. And no, not every opinion has the same weight.
Sorry that is how life works. If this were indeed an equal opportunity society, then politics, religions, heads of staff, bosses, overseers, managers, owners, presidents and kings would have no reason for being and no executive power. Granted, We may do well without religion or politics, but someone has got to make the wiser decisions based on a foundation.

This poll is fundamentally flawed in both assuming that all these changes were done to "please the new crowd", and that all the "new crowd" wants is wrong by default. Just to give some examples from the "issues" mentioned in the linked thread:

- Solo mode. Was announced early on, was always the plan, free switching was always the plan, nothing new here to "please the new crowd".
- Supercruise exit distance at stations. It is implied here that it had destroyed PvP/piracy at stations, whereas that was never the intended place for it to happen. Piracy was always meant to exist out there, in the cold uncaring void, not right outside the door of a heavily armed and fully operational battle station, I mean starport.
- NPCs with no shields exist because some players also do not have shields in order to maximize cargo space. Maybe it's a bit silly that even pirate NPCs do so, but there is no indication this change to NPC loadouts was done to do any other than introduce more variety.
- Shield cells. Regardless of any potential critizism, they've been there for quite some time already, and they had been mentioned very early on during development, in fact.
- The insurance "tweaks" were simply the effective removal of backer perks that were explicitly marked during the time frame of their availability. Plus, the game is no easier due to insurance being lower for those with a discount, it merely reduces the grind to recuperate (for which I am grateful).
- Cargo insurance has also been mentioned several months back already, so no surprise that it will come. Plus, we don't even know how it will work, possibly this will be something you'll have to purchase again each time you fill your hold.
- Rare commodities were indeed too good a money maker initially indeed, now they are in quite good place where they enable small-time long distance trading as a viable alternative to short distance bulk trading. (Which also increases viability of small and cheap ships like the Hauler, or the Adder, whereas previously literally all trading lead to T6 and above, now you can be a successful trader in a small ship.)
- I have no idea in which way docking has been made easier at all. It's mostly unchanged from the Alpha when docking was first introduced.
- Anarchies are only safe if you are equipped and experienced enough to defend against those other ships trying to do the same as you are doing to them. Especially for new player, a pirate Cobra attacking is as scary as ever.
- Last but not least the reduction in NPC kill stealing. I'll just answer sarcastically because I still can't believe people are critisizing FD for doing what has been asked for, again and again, ever since the very first iteration of money-for-combat in the Alpha. This is like possible the best thing they have done since release.

The only real surprise here was the kill stealing change, and that was a positive one.

(For the record, I've always spoken up against "dumbing the game down", but I simply don't see such a thing happening here at all.)

Move with the times?

But surely none of us really want that? Because if you go with "the times" it means the game will purely be hand holding at all times and spoon-feeding you content like 99% of games these days.

I'm sorry but if that's being with "the times" I for one don't want any part of it and will not play. Like I stopped playing rpgs when they insisted on being ZERO challenge and hand holding you every step of the way.

Call me ancient, old fashioned or whatever but I for one like a challenge when I play, if there's no challenge there's really not much point playing.

I don't get it. Your post is effectively "I spent some money on a new computer to play this game, they should cater to me, not people that already had a computer"

You make some reasonable points, but you're just coming off as some entitled old grump yelling "back in my day we had to walk 20 miles to school through snow, uphill both ways."

:S I want to know how you feel about FD and the changes, I'ts nothing to do with the money, I just want it to be a good game, that is all.

Do you thing turning the game new and modern is making it worse or not.

Some people don't care as long as the game gets finished.

I don't hink they should "change anything." Much of what we see is placeholder and unfinished game mechanics. The base is solid but they need to continue fleshing out the features. Some people are mistaking unfinished game mechanics as intended feature and stirring up a storm arguing about it.

It's like a construction site where two groups of people are setting up trenches on either side of it to do battle over whether the cranes should be red or blue.
