cobra vs viper. dogfights.

Viper for me. After kitting out the Cobra I got bored of it, and just used it to grind for a Lakon 6. Was 2 million creds away from an Asp, looked at it's reviews and found myself sourly disapointed. It's cargo hold is only a small amount better then the Lakon 6 with it's fighting capability not greatly excelling, can pack a punch, but can be easily outmaneuvered, also making the jump to the next ship a headache. So I thought screw it, went back down to a smaller much cheaper ship, the Viper, sunk as much upgrades as possible into it with decent weaponary. And am absolutely in love with it, plus the Gold skin just makes me feel 'Bling Bling'. No wonder they had to take the nerf bat to it in the beta phase, that ship is a combat bred animal ;)

Those hardpoints on the Viper though, they are like a damn surgeons knife.

How do you configure your triggers/firegroups?

Fire Group 1: beam lasers on primary, multicannons on secondary
Fire group: kill warrant scanner on primary, frameshift interdictor on secondary

Both chaff and shield cell and on separate button on my HOTAS, no need to set them to a fire group

How do you config shield cell to a button? there is not an option for that or is there?

You can always deselct the target and have them fire straight...

Good tip.

Same here in my Cobra. Always nose up for the gimballed MCs down below to break down armour after the beams cut through the shields. I do think it could have better weapon placement though, they could shift those bottom hardpoints forward quite a bit, but it's probably deliberate to stop the Cobra being too powerful.

In my Cobra I use fix beam lasers and gimballed autocannons.

The limited tracking of the lower side autocannons so far (100+ bounties claimed) is a non-issue to me.

Sorry if I am missing something. I looked in options for a binding for shield cell, didn't see one.

Here ya go.

The spacing of the ports on a Cobra do definitely pose a problem. I remember putting fixed cannons on the bottom and it was impossible to land both of the shots on a Federal dropship unless I happen to be staring at its belly or side. Not an easy challenge when a dropship outguns you. As I really dislike gimballed weapons, I just have 4 fixed pulse lasers on my Cobra. Although Viper does have the advantage of a tighter hardport configuration and I would agree is better suited for dog fighting, its the general purpose nature of the Cobra why I prefer to stick with it. But that's what makes ED interesting. You can go pure bounty hunting, pure trucker, or mix.

Gimbals are 4 the aimless , and when u come against a player with chaff, fixed and a sense of aim , ur toast.
Even NPC uses chaff from time to time and it can be a major deciding factor in a fight when you're not even able to fire back. A nice smooth playing joystick or gamepad should be all you need to land fixed shots.

I think the biggest problem for most pilots that comes with the cobra
is the setup they are used to run,
most setups i see are homogenous consisting of one or a mix of two types of weapons.

Try a setup with 3 weapon types, instead of going laser + mc,
you will be astonished how much utility the cobra can field,
and why it is better to have the lower class hardpoints spread and fixed below.

Take on 2 gimballed lasers on the c2,
and concentrate on aiming the shots that count with a c1 railgun or dumbfire missiles.

Lasers are infinite fire weapons, but cap heavy beasts,
i have made positive experience using my tri-weapon setups.

This makes me want to swap my default load-out, actually. I have gimbal pulse lasers on the bottom and mutli-canons on the top of my Cobra. Given the discussion in this thread, I think I'll get more use out of the burst lasers being moved to the top.

Once I get gimbal beams, it might be time for some seriously precision piracy.

Also, I like the OPs analysis. One thing it's missing, generally, though is the price comparison - isn't the Viper cheaper?

If you want to run precision damage setups you might wanna ditch beam lasers,
they are inaccurate in comparison to controllable burst or pulse laser salvos.
The gimballs dance too much, to be worth fielding gimballed beams and
expect precision damage to subsystems above 50 meters distance.

I should probably experiment with more setups, but with the Viper I've never felt going with two fixed beam lasers and two gimbaled multi-cannons was a mistake. Peel off the shields with the beams and let loose with the cannons.

There are no fixed/gimbal hardpoints. All hardpoints can house all types of weapon in that class. I have four gimbaled weapons on a Viper and have no issues using all four at once. There's plenty of play in the lower/upper aiming slightly higher/lower than center. So long as you can keep them near the horizon of the ship all four will fire at once.

I prefer fixed for when the target is at distance, as I only need gimbaled when I can't quite keep them directly in front of me.

All fixed would be great though if you were constantly fighting babies first start starship. All gimbaled would be great if you're exceptional at keeping in very close to your enemy, you'd be constantly firing into your blindspots both above and below.

I prefer having both though because I find myself in both situations vs different targets. Sometimes keeping behind someone is just really easy and having fixed for the extra damage really pays off, sometimes they're constantly orbiting or at worst out-turning me.
