Lights - Um... Has anyone found a use for them?

You can use the lights to morse-code when the in-game comms fail. But other than that, not much of use, except at very dark places (like an outpost behind a ginormous planet, barely visible).

As others have said, mining is a a good use for lights. Especially when you are on the dark side of a planet mining in it rings! Trying flying around in one when you are in the shade, its scary!

I also thought that you may be able to blind other pilots by flashing your light at them...... not tried that one though:)

They also make you more visible from inside the station when approaching the letterbox - NPCs don't pay any attention but I've had other cmdrs avoid collisions because as I was coming in they could see my lights through the blue haze. Toggling the lights is part of my "landing mode" macro along with dropping the gear and setting 4 pips to shields :)

Sometimes I wish there was some sort of cabin lighting that you could turn on. Most of the cockpits are awesome, but 95% of the time it's pitch black in there. FD, dome light me!!!

I used them to avoid hitting some wreckage in a darker area, I was there picking up some cargo for a mission.

I use them at take off, and approach to the station before landing. They are turned off after touchdown.

What can I say? Years of flight simming, just feels right to do and does give better visibility on dark landing outposts, and oncoming traffic is more visible with its lights on.

Cheers

Does this have any gameplay mechanics relating to lights?
For instance if you turn off lights does it make you harder to detect when stealth smuggling into station ? PvP cat and mouse.. Hide in shadow of asteroid.. Engage silent running turn off lights eject heat sink..?

I use them at dark outposts. Helps with landing safely.

Me, too!

Also helps when leaving a space station...I thought I saw a hauler stuck in a darkened letterbox...I flipped my lights on and it was a Lakon 6....sometimes its hard to see!

I've used them to legitimate benefit landing on some platforms that are in the shadow of their parent planet and the platform is tucked in next to one of those really tall spires with the blinking light. It'd be nice if they were a little more powerful but they get the job done.

I find its fun to spam the light key while pointing at a friend while they dock at a outpost.

Que space disco docking music

So as the title says really...

Anyone found a use for them?

Stupid me was in a dark system in the shadow of an eclipse trying to land on a poorly illuminated outpost...

The people in the outpost must have thought I was Santa! I was flicking my lights on and off but it made no difference, I could not see anything but found the landing pad lights and gingerly made my way to the pad without hitting any part of the 'hidden' outpost.

When I was 30 foot from the pad I got a dull glow from the lights....

So... what are they for?

The lights actually shine quite a way out from the ship when you notice them. They go for about 100m out but due to the scale of the ship and stations/outposts it doesn't seem to have any effect. I use mine to help me land at outposts and to shine in the eyes of oncomming traffic at stations.

Also used them in the past when mining as it helps me gauge how close I am to the asteroids, and boy some of those things are spinning faster than you think.

Lights came in most handy before text chat was implemented.

Oh, those halcyon days of flashing your lights, stowing your hard points, and doing a little ship-dance like space honey bees to show you meant no harm. Of course, if someone danced badly... ;)

Landing and take-off lights is part of being a good pilot to warn-off other pilots. Seems like NPCs don't use them, so would help us to tell the difference.
