My first 100k - What should I do?

Hey guys,

I was looking for some advice. I've just made my first 100k credits and I was wondering what you would do; buy another or save up for a more expensive ship or upgrade the sidewinder? The sidewinders seems pretty good to be honest, but then again, I don't have any comparison yet.

What did you guys do?

Thanks!

celebrate it with best brandy from Lave :D

but depends what you want to do- if trading, then go for a hauler, if piracy/bounty hunting then eagle or adder (haven't tried but looks like adder is solid choice for little piracy and smuggling)

I bought a hauler and went exploring. What you do depends on ... what you want to do!

I don't want to be forced into a particular route. I want to do a wee bit of delivery jobs and some bounty jobs. No heavy duty full time cargo goals here.

It depends on how you make your credits. Do you trade, or do combat activities? I started with trade missions. My suggestion with 100k would be to either get a Hauler or an Adder for the increased cargo space and jump range and continue making more credits until you can afford a Cobra. The Cobra is a good multitasking ship that can do combat missions and trade missions after a bit of upgrading.

The Type 6 is nice too, but is really limited when/if you want to consider combat missions as a change of pace. It all depends on how you play. :)

Damn, why the heck isn't there an EDIT option?

Also, isn't upgrading the SW a good option? Or are the weapons too weak?

Make another 900k. :)

Seriously, get a Hauler. It's easier to get around and make even more cash. After that, get yourself a Cobra. Best allround ship imo.

If you made your 100k trading, upgrade to a White Transit (Hauler) and keep doing it with more cargo. This will accelerate your earnings to the next ship you want. If you did it hunting bounties, upgrade to an Eagle and accelerate your earnings by killing faster, etc etc. I would head for a Cobra either way as it is multi-purpose.

Choices, choices! I'd recommend upgrading your Sidey. You won't loose the money you spend on upgrades. They'll add to the trade in value of your ship when you are ready to get into something bigger. Upgrade the power plant, distributor, thrusters, and FSD. Then get some new weapons. If you haven't tried gimbal weapons given them a go.

Buying a ship does not lock you into that role. There is no depreciation of ships or equipment (at least at this time), so it's no problem to buy a cargo ship, fly it for awhile, then trade in for a combat ship, or just store your cargo vessel. I'm doing intensive trade runs right now with a Lakon 6, building a nest egg.

I bought a Hauler and oufitted it with a much better FSD, reinforced bulkheads, Chaff and Heat Sink. I have been racking up miles like crazy. I intend to use it to finance the purchase of a fighting vessel that would start me off on my path to renowned bounty hunter.

Just my 2 cents

I upgraded my sidewinder, because I was having too much fun bounty hunting. Honestly, the ship is great fun once you've given it a spit and a polish.

Hauler -> Type 6 -> Type 9 and ASP

Or.... Buy gold... Abandon it outside starport

How about putting your Sidey into storage and buying an Eagle for a bit of light combat practice in a different ship. If you like the Eagle and think combat is the way you want to go you can work towards a Viper, selling the Sidey and the Eagle when you have the funds to make the jump (and in the meantime check out the forum threads on Viper outfitting). Flying two different ships, and maybe alternating between the two, can only improve your skills.

Otherwise if trade/mining is more your thing then, as other posts say, the Hauler is your next step, but be aware you will want to avoid combat of any kind in it.

There is a third possibility: if you have only been working in a local bubble why not put off the upgrade for a little while and go sightseeing and exploring? It won't earn as much as active trading but surveying a few unexplored systems will pay the bills even if you only have a Basic Discovery Scanner.

The first thing I did was get some gimbled burst lasers, a new power drive, a new power distributor, new frame shift drive and a heat sink launcher on my sidewinder. For bounty hunting and general combat. If I was a trader then a hauler, followed by frame shift drive and cargo space.

Sidewinder is a decent little ship that can be upgraded to a good level.

I did something similar but I didn't do the chaff or the bulkheads, I instead upgraded the cargo racks, power distribution and the power plant. Ended up with a 16ton capacity 19LY jump range Hauler. Very quickly got enough cash for a Cobra and to have 75k in hand for more cargo. Now in the middle of upgrading the Cobra. you can get all the money back for add-ons when you upgrade anyway, so I now can do more trading (28tons now in the Cobra) and I can go bounty hunting or accept kill missions - just took down my first Anaconda (after a 35 minute fight and spending more on ammo than the mission reward, Doh!). One caution though - the Cobra drinks fuel compared to the Hauler so get a fuel scoop :)
