Sol the Great disappointment

Thought "what was the fuss about Mars High, looks the same as others" then I got inside - nice.

Mars itself could well be what it would look like terraformed (with a lot of sea), it seemed to be mostly sea in the northern hemisphere and a big round one that could be the Hellas basin. The reddish colour under the green and the craters is a nice touch to remind us it's still Mars. I think Olympus Mons and Valles Marineris are on the night side at the moment (although looking at where they've placed the sea level I expect Valles Marineris to be underwater for at least some of it).

Also picked up a 37k bounty from a USS on the way in, nice.

Staring at images on a screen is nothing whatsoever like seeing them up close with your own eyes...

If you want that, I'd suggest buying a good telescope and some nice juicy Televue oculars, or wait for Richard Branson to get his space plane project advanced. Otherwise, the views of Saturn and Jupiter in the game are merely good approximations.

Well...why should it be so different? In the time of Elite Dangerous, surely it would only be a significantly unique system by name only, and the fact it's the Cradle of Humanity? By the year 3200 or whatever it is, there would be countless other systems with similar wealth so why should Sol stand out so much? As long as everything there is handcrafted, that's all we need. If any planets in Sol were randomly generated, that would be a disappointment.

What did you expect to be different? It is just 1 of biilion's of systems. Sol has a Capship in obrit around Earth, and quite a few good trade routes are available.I made my first millions trading Superconductors out of SOL, the system has an insane amount of stock at low prices.

What were you expecting to find in the Solar System other than the planets that are in the Solar system? This doesn't seem like a good reason to cut off your nose to spite your face. The expansions have to potential to add a massive amount of game-play to the game.

Not sure what you expected to be different as ours is a solar system just like millions of others out there. All the planet textures were handcrafted and extra care was taken with sculpting Earth and Mars.

Dunno what you expected?

Our solar system is no different to any other.. we are just in a random part of the galaxy on a random planet. I don't know what you expected.
There's not going to be magical unicorns or santa flying across the solar system.

I see you guys did not read the old newsletters or watch the old interviews saying SOL was going to be something different, maybe a different station, more traffic, not the same station we had on every other system, how about giant stations with multiple communications in between them?. I did not expect different planets or Santa flying across the solar system (I expect him to show up tonight tho).

I expected something like this:
Something that tells me "you really need a permit to get in here" not the same old stuff as every other planet.

FD never said "SOL will be the same so don't bother going there expecting something different" pretty much the opposite was stated

Interesting, I've spotted something over 2 million ls away in Sol, off for a look (and I'm supposed to be packing up to visit my parents for Christmas right now).

The moon did seem a bit on the small side, too small to eclipse from the Earth (but that might be the sun's glare). I'll have to work it out some time considering what the field of view is.

Were you expecting something like this at every station?

TBH yes that does look cool

why did you feel the need to tell us that you were disappointed? I don't care, I am sure the other forum users don't care, if you have a problem tell it direct to FD via the support network.

I am not sure what you were expecting to happen when you went there? maybe your imagination got carried away

If you don't care why are you posting?

I too felt utterly betrayed by the lack of unicorns.

Yeah that could be really nice a unicorn bobble head

Really? We were told that? By FD? I must have missed it.

I'll try and find it on the youtube channel and show you ;)

open sandbox , good luck on keep on playing after the first expansion lol

Nope, not buying anything more from FD, No man's sky is coming

I'm a beta backer and during all the testing we were told that SOL was going to be a jewel, something great and that's why they were keeping SOL out of the testing phases. I just went there today and it's just the same thing just much more stations but all the same, SOL has nothing to differentiate it from the other system other than I actually know the names of the planets, serious disapointment, I'll continue playing Elite cause is a pretty good game but won't be buying expansions, I'm sure FD is saving some of the great stuff on SOL for an expansion and that's just a plain lie.

FD lost a customer (except if they come up with a new roller coaster tycoon game :D)

So FD have lost a customer? (Except that you are going to continue to play ED with all the pre-expansion updates that are to come) and then once the first expansion comes out (regardless of what that includes) you are going to stop playing because you feel you were mislead/disappointed with SOL earlier on in development?

Righto!

Player gets to Sol.

Sol exactly as expected.

Other planetary systems confused, God contacted - asked to produce "something more believable."

Got it! :)

Is it just me that finds seeing recognisable constellations pretty neat?

it is.

I think the point being made is that although getting to sol is an interesting adventure it is by no stretch of the imagination going to be radically different from any other system.

Speaking personally on the larger map there is a rather large black spot area which is not traveable, I am more interested in that.

It's not just you by any stretch. Not only are they recognizable, but for the most part the magnitudes and colors are nearly perfect. There are some anomalies and bright stars that shouldn't be there but overall it's fantastic. Amazing, really.

Righto!

Where did I say I wont play anymore? Im just not buying any more stuff for elite. The fact that I dont get expansions should not prevent me from playing the regular game.

And this SOL thing is just about many things that let me down about elite but theres a whole bunch of thread talking about those other things.

Sorry I rattle the fanboys. Please go back to the game :)

Here is a nice pic of Uranus :D

Looks right to me. Though the problem with hand crafting Sol is you might end up with stuff you don't see in the rest of the procedural galaxy (like Uranus's rings, I've not seen any more like them so far). I hope they thought of that :/

The reason they held back Sol is because they wanted to handcraft the system to make it accurate rather than it being procedurally generated. I don't know why you were expecting anything else, but if you were, then that's your look-out, not FD's.

This is of course why I omitted Uranus from my little list. :D Clever bit of reverse psychology there though. :)

Edit: OP - consider this question: How long are you actually going to spend in Sol? Once you've had a good long think, I believe you'll find this thread as dumb as the rest of us do...
