How are we supposed to please the naysayers?

Sounds, 10+ (or A+, whichever you prefer). Flight models. SC. All sorts of little details here and there... which whizz by unnoticed if one's in a rush of any sort.

There isn't really anything I'd dislike in ED - probably because I don't have mindset of a "must achieve/hoard everything NOW" person.

I've logged over 100 hours using the Rift, and still get WOW moments.

I've sat in station for half an hour before, just watching the traffic.

I've spent AGES looking around the cockpit, gawping at nebulae and some of the prettier habitable planets.

I once sat by a large asteroid for over an hour - silent mode engaged - just waiting for a Wanted ship to fly by so I could pop out and ambush them. Just watching the other miners do their thing with the semi occluded gas giant and sun flickering in the background gave me such a sense of immersion using the Rift, that a potentially boring peice of gameplay became an actual experience.

Thats not even talking about the first time I experienced a cap ship warp in. That NOISE. It was right on top of me when it breached the cloud... The sense of scale was unbeleivable. The ensuing battle was excellent - high level warzones with 20-30 ships slugging it out are such fun for railgun sniping targets softened up by friendly forces.

I know a good chunk of my experience have been down the the Rift, but this game provides the source material. I'm excited to get new ships, just to look around the cockpit! The level of visual fidelity that Frontier have provided is nothing short of incredible.

As it seems, other people haven't experienced the same amount of joy as me. This is the game I wanted when I was a boy. I imagined piloting my ship so vividly back then; using the Rift, its better than I could have hoped. Yes, it's FAR from perfect, but the pragmatist in me understands that more is to come.

I, personally, cannot wait.

Same here my friend...same here.... the game I've hoped for so many years.....With Rift Consumer Version Summer 2015... and Frontiers Vision.. I'll be jacked into my own space matrix.... and I would not change my decision of what color pill I took..... Kudos Frontier... Kudos....

I guess the original Elite in 84 is responsible for bringing me here, I bought this game knowing & understanding the commitment it requires to get the most out of it. I think the attention to detail is incredible and the sound is extremely immersive.

Yes it has a few issues, what game doesn't these days ? but looking at the bigger picture the potential is huge. I'm excited to see how far they can take it

Yeah that seems to be my only gripe about it. BUT! If you have an Nvidia card you could Downsample it to get rid of the blurry UI. If you have an AMD card, namely the newer ones you could download the Omega drivers which just updated a feature that's equivalent to NVIDIA's. I"m not too 100% sure which one's but I think the 295 and 290x are good to go for this. Otherwise the rest of us non 290+ owners are going to have to wait until AMD adds the feature for lower cards within the next month.

Thanks. I need glasses to read, so maybe with those it works better. I have a 280x so no luck there, I'll check OR forums to see if anyone with readign golasses has any problems

Thanks a lot!

Forget for a while, the frustration and focus on what brought you here.

What brought me here didn't happen and probably never will given the state of the game (carving my way into the galaxy through hyperspace coordinates discovery).

So instead I'm staying here for the combat and I'm just going to collect and upgrade all the ships.

Yeah, that's what I've been doing lately. The combat is crazy good with the rift, as a matter of fact I'm better with it on versus having to use the mouse to aim while fighting.

What still wows me the most about ED is the degree of fine control I have over the various systems of my "ship". Little things like powering down the refinery module in order to leave a little more power available for my countermeasures subsystems while I'm in combat. Or even just the individual thruster controls. All combined, it makes my "ship" feel more real to me than any other space-based game has ever managed.

There are many other things that also keep me coming back to ED on a daily basis, but that's probably the biggest one. I really want a walk-around capability for my ship in an eventual expansion, 'cause I can let myself believe it's actually my ship to the extent of wanting to get out there and clean/fix it up by hand.

The cockpits in Oculus Rift, and the overall experience in VR.
The sound.
The vast, beautiful galaxy.
The line they chose between science and fiction.
Dreadnoughts opening fire

Really a lot of things
But most of all, the potential.

The cockpits are very nice in a rift aren't they.
I think I enjoy flying around in rings the most (being able to fly looking out the side or the top of the cockpit makes dodging rocks quite a bit easier as you can just look in your direction of travel, being able to judge distances seems easier as well. I get pretty close to the rocks sometimes, so much fun). I almost never fly strait ahead (old descent player), love using every one of my 6 deg of freedom, especially in a crowded space, to thier fullest extent.
I also really enjoy the flight assist off option. I think they did a great job on implementing this.
You hit the nail on the head in my opinion, the potential is scary.... can't wait to see what the next year or two brings.
Also, I looooove the Eagle.

It actually feels like you are flying a spaceship, or at least how I imagine it would feel because I am sure in that year the actually reality of it none of us now know what it may feel like.

So in a word immersion.

I have always loved outer space, and have spent many, many hours peering through my telescope without ever once complaining about a lack of content or progression. Being able to hop in a spaceship and "visit" the places Ive been dreaming about seeing up close all my life is really amazing. The sights, the sounds, the vast empty void, its beautiful to me.

I also enjoy trading and the constant search for profits. I enjoy exploring beyond the outer fringes of civilized space and wondering if I am the first human being to ever lay eyes on this nebula or that planets icy moon. I enjoy the freedom, the potential, the long moments of peace and the sudden conflict. I enjoy the cold and sometimes lonely, sometimes exhilarating journey from Harmless to Elite.

sounds like the perfect game for you.

I am curious, is there any application that can show the night sky as it should look from other star systems.

a bit of a cheat but it would be great to know what I am looking at when I am far from sol

FA Off.

I'm *so* happy the Frontier added FA Off, retained it throughout, and even spent time and effort finessing it and asking for flight-model feedback about it when it was late in the day.

It's an incredibly rewarding mode of flight for me, for stuff like docking, sightseeing, etc. Having a heavy-feeling ship under control, when every twitch, breath and reaction needs to be controlled to stay on course? Brilliant.

On the flipside, when it comes to combat, I'm very grateful Frontier went with the aircraft-style of control, FA On mode. I've tried FA Off combat for the past week, religiously avoiding switching assist on, and my personal impression is that FA On combat is ten times as fun and engaging as FA Off combat. There's just something really right-feeling about it.

So... the flight system is my pick for transcendent, wonderful stuff that I'm particularly grateful to have in the game.

It really just comes down to 1) how the game meets your expectations and 2) how much the game entertains you. People in both of these areas vary widely in both spectrums, so what's fun and worthwhile for you is not fun and worthwhile for others. This often leads to some people criticizing (usually the older crowd) some players for being complacent turtles who could be handed a crap platter to pick through and be thoroughly satisfied and happy about it, and other people criticizing (usually the younger crowd) some players who don't have the attention span or gusto of a flea who want everything NOW and easy as hell.

The problem comes from these two groups. Are you just complaining because this game doesn't hold your hand and spoonfeed you easy credits and explain things and tell you how to do everything? Or are you complaining because those legitimately criticizing the game have a point but you're fine with everything the way it is so it's clearly some issue on their end and they should be grateful because kids in Africa are starving?

I'm of the opinion that most people are between both extremes, but it's really difficult to judge by forum posts. Everything on here seems polarized and binary, like everything is black and white. Such a thread accomplishes nothing except to act as a conduit for everyone to rehash their same old points about one thing or another repeatedly until no one even bothers to read others' posts anymore. This forum has taken a serious downturn since Gamma and it's not likely to turn around, unfortunately.

I see your valid point, but the objective of the post was to give thanks for a feature in Elite. The last thing I want right now is to start a flame war and have my thread closed. So please for the sake of the children, stick to the topic. That's all I ask.

Naysayers gonna say nay. There will always be some. Not to say we shouldn't voice our criticisms, but there will always be some who complain regardless of the decisions that are made. It seems obvious, but more often than no, common sense - isn't.

What I love about the game:

  • Space, thousands upon thousands of star systems and planets worth (and hopefully more to come)
  • Sounds (it might not be realistic, but it's a game)
  • Having a true multi-role ship that does a good job at each of those roles
  • Having something to use my expensive Warthog HOTAS system with, now that I've grown a bit tired of flight sims
  • A game to use the future consumer version of Oculus Rift with (tempted by the devkit, but I'm not that much of an early adopter)
  • Having been on board for the early stage of the game and seeing it grow before my eyes

Keep some pressure on the devs to fit netcode, finetune graphics for lowerish end system , reduce cpu bandwidth. Drive player events like the dukes of mikinn. Come up with lots of ideas, and encourage those that might like the game cough bored eve online types to buy the frontier game because well it fills all the holes that ccp have ignored with eve. 400b solar systems and player influence on planetary and stellar events. In a moe direct way

I absolutely love the way the Station killed me in seconds with my 1.000.000 of Gold, just for forgetting to request docking permission
and not enough warning time to turn my type 6 and fly out again...

No, really. Its the detailed graphics and the feel of scale that brought and holds me here.
I'm never tired of watching the Stations as i'm passing by, or the planets where the sun sets and illuminating the atmosphere etc..
What really gets me in Beta 1 was the dashboard figure. It was that sense of a private ship as a living room and for detail. Hope they come back...
Also the fun of flying crazy with FA-Off and Thrusters. Without that it would be too boring to Haul and Dock 100 times in a row.
And then the TrackIR and Hotas Support. Its so freaking immersive because of the Pilot Model sitting there like you.
Can't wait to try it out on an Oculus Rift someday...

I really, really want a "proper" anti-aliasing solution. SMAA is working to the point where I'm not overly bothered by the jaggies, but I'd really love some TXAA or CSAA.

I've tried the new nVidia technology with the acronym I can never remember that renders at up to 4k and then downsamples the image to your actual resolution, but it did not give me a sufficiently high framerate to use it for actual gameplay on my GTX 770.

Oh my God that's hilarious!!

I would be so livid if that were to happen to me. But then again I'm broke enough as it is. Yet I find it amazing how you keep your cool in that situation.
