Shield Cell Banks

What is the point of shield cell banks though more so how do I use them. I have asigned them to firegroup and when my shields drop they dont work. I have tried to use it before my shields drop and doesnt work either. So are they just dead weight at the moment

You need to use them before your shields are completely depleted.

Edit 2:
I personally don't have them in a firegroup but have them bound to a key instead so I can use them via voiceattack.

Been using shield cell banks for the first time today myself, and from what I noticed, is that they dont instantly replenish your shield.
Its like a regenetive health potion in a RPG, that heals over time.

I have it set on my secondary fire button, and when the shield is down to last ring, I just fire one off, and watch my shield regenerate quickly.
Although I do have a seperate key for them, I have yet to use it.

Are there something else bound to the same key for your shield bank cells?
Maybe it could cause some complications.

I have them bound to a key and not a fire group.

Also, if you use one and you are still taking fire your shield may fail before the cell kicks in and recharges. If that happens the cell will not work. I usually use one as I drop to the last ring because of this reason.

As grae3107 stated,
once you pressed the firegroup or shield cell button there is a short period of time they need before being apllied to your current shield power.
Focussed fire can still break their recharge and down the shield.
Using the shield cells when on the last "ring" is working against NPCs but don't count on it against smart players.

Anyway shield cells? No.
Improve piloting and power management? Yes.

I don't always use shield cell banks, but when I do, it's while fighting an Elite Anaconda.

I have them binded to a single key on my keyboard, when my last shield bar is fading into red that's when I pop it, it recovers my shield integrity back to full power.

They basically buy you more time to kill before you're killed. They don't work if your shields are offline, if that happens you'll need to wait until they come back online before using them.

I have faced multiple NPCs with shield cells, who actually put them to good use.
Namely that have been Pythons and #condas so far,
but i have an energy saving rig in weapons on my ship, so i lack the punch to unshield 'em quick enough.
