How do you stop players from simply blowing up other players for the hell of it?

If we're going to talk about expectations of mature players, then I'd ask why we continuously have threads started by adult players who have made the choice to play in open mode?

In open, players might kill you. That's the risk you take when you select open mode. The adult thing to do isn't to run to the forums and complain or demand changes. Instead, accept that you made a mistake in evaluating the level of risk you were prepared to live with, and then play in solo mode or one of the groups.

I trade in open. I accept that I might well lose a significant amount of my wealth. I'm also happy to fight against other players in order to defend myself. Space is dangerous.

Ease up there boss, I didnt see any changes demanded. The forums are for communicating with other players, and he was curious if this was acceptable / normal behavior and if there were consequences, and wanted to ask some experienced players how he should go about handling it. I see zero reason for that kind of hostility on any day, and particularly not on Christmas. I think another shot or two of rum in your eggnog is called for. Sheesh.

I get the thrill and enjoyment out of the game knowing that at any moment someone could attempt to interdict me and it becomes a fight for my life. It's part of what makes this game immersive for me.
Let me finish kiting my Anaconda while playing solo and I'll certainly can come and help you with immersion :) Seriously though, this is what open play is about. It is just a way for people abused in R/L to get back to somebody.

Learn to kick their sorry butts, run away, or play solo.

If another player wants to be a homocidal maniac, he should be allowed to be a homocidal maniac. It gives the bounty hunters a reason to get up in the morning.

You hire people like me, for maybe a very tiny bit of your profits, to come and hang out with you. I love PvP, but I'm not going to try to force it down someone's throat if they aren't ready for it (scanned clean, obviously trying to get away, scanned valuable cargo, etc). But PvP against people who go out of their way just to interdict and beat up on others? They deserve every cannon shot fired down their gullet.

Tell me where exactly it's written that this game of Elite is supposed to be dangerous???

;)

What do you mean?? It's right there in the logo!

I was hardly being hostile, and if that is how you have taken my point, then I have not communicated in the way I intended.

I disagree with your assessment of the OP though. It appears to me as another potentially endless thread on defining 'griefing'.

Xmas is over here, but I hope you enjoy the remainder of yours.

Nothing better than toasting another player. It's best if they fight back and have some skills. But so far few ever have. Those who run die a cowards death and deservedly so in my opinion. I've had one player give me a run for my money so far but that's it. How about learning some combat skills people? That or head to solo play and stay there. Killing NPC's? Mind numbingly boring. Killing other players? Priceless.

Solo play is there for exactly this reason. Expecting everyone to be nice and civilized in an open world game where anything goes is ridiculous. Elite: DANGEROUS for life. ;)

Which would be fine, if the game offered assassination missions on players characters , or if killing someone was worthwhile because they had a bounty on them.

Killing them just for the sake of killing a new player, thats griefing to me.
there are missions for killing traders or bounty hunters, not sure if those apply to players, but they do exist.

i doubt that was why you were attacked though.

the real problem is the game mechanics, there is very little punishment for shooting at innocents, so i fly in open expecting to be attacked by a player who just wants to shoot at other players. it's a lot like any other PvP game, like call of duty or world of tanks. the rules are setup to make PvP viable (not profitable, but viable) so with that in mind i would not see a player shooting at me as a player griefing me. it's just how the rules go and they are there for that side of the game

as for me, i get a buzz from the escape, so i'll be sticking with open. feel free to swap between open, group and solo as you fancy it, the options are there for us to mess with. it's a shame there is no official coop mode as many would prefer that over the group mode, but that's just the way things work at the moment

Could have just been someone wondering "I wonder what happens if I try to kill someone? Lets try it!"

Or it could be a psychopath just out to ruin your day. Hard to tell.

Just curious, did you try to jump away? Did you have shields?

Really surprised that no one has mentioned the simplest way to deal with players that you, for whatever reason, don´t want to interact with. Put them on your Ignore list. You can still enjoy the pros of Open play with a small risk of being placed in the same instance as that dude ever again, it´s not an absolute block due to a bit of built in fuzziness. If people did this consistently the game will evolve to pairing players with similar attitudes about what is acceptable playstyles.

Speaking for myself, I tend to play open but also PVE if this became a problem for me. Pirating should be something undertaken with communication, opening up on another player without such communication is just bad and yes dangerous. Murder carries quiet a bounty these days unless your in an anarchy system - where its fair game with no rule of law. However the comment - just learn some combat skills, well for some of us who are older, its not that easy. I just find combat in this game difficult to master and with limited time and resources, also not something I am keen to undertake as a viable option.

I'd love to give you a run for your money, but to be honest I'd be a walk over, so would rather run with my money - since that is the only viable option I have. But should that prove too cowardly then I'm going to PVE and sadly limit my interaction with other players. Some of us don't want to fight, can't fight for toffee, and run only because its the one option we feel we can offer. Catch me if you can, I've got a lot of practice doing that, that is for sure.

My question is, would you be asking the same question if it were an NPC? I've had more than my fair share interdict me and just open fire, cargo or not. What's the difference if you're not prepared for a fight?

ive just got to the stage where I have some missile defence and 3 decent weapons on my eagle. improved the power distributor ect... and now when I get interdicted I cant wait for the fight.... up until the last 12 hours I was in the same position as every new player. trade and run, only taking kills where there is back up...
so the revenge has begun for me... yeeehaaa!!!!! lol
I don't attack traders though...yet... good luck.... see you in space... :)

Is the block player functionality live yet? Its meant to SUBSTANTIALLY reduce the likelyhood of being in the same instance as a blocked player.

Oh no, the space madness gains another victim...

This is easily avoidable:

1. Fly with a friend/wingman.
2. Fly a better armed ship.

Its perfectly acceptable to FD for people to commit random murder like this(and so it should be imo), and its no different from the world in which we live today. Sure, I'd prefer every scumbag to have honor and at least engage me with some criminal quips before combat, but thats not always the case. We can't 'force' people to play our way...

Griefing is unavoidable. If you get griefed, don't rage. Just calm down and learn how to death with aggressive players.
