Name 1 good fun thing about stations!

Hi guys.

So so i thought a bit after polstring elsewhere...

we do not need stations in elite...

market, should be in ship feature.. Sure they will have internet 1000 years from now
missions - look above
repair refuel - i am sure it will be done by drones in space 1000 years from now
news - look above
social - well look above
commodities - cargo scoop is allready there, and jettison as well... Why simple not just fly to recipient and jet to his/her cargo scoop.... Maybe Trade hus should be playerbased Capital ships....

anyways.. I Challenge u all... Name 1 fun thing about stations that really adds to the game play...

(and please dont flame, i like the game, like flying and dogfighting - i just hate waiting the little gaming time i have)

nostaliga and atmosphere.
Mostly stations have lots of cargo storage for and effective market and outfitting.

As a matter of fact the don't use the internet anymore for anything important because hacking suites and electronic countermeasures became too good. Thats why there are no drones as well.

I see you come from eve. The designers have said that capital ship flying and large player groups are out because they don't want eve to happen to this. This game is about One Pilot in One Ship against the galaxy. But lets pursue the capital ship idea for a moment.

Okay so we've got a capital ship and we want to use it for a trade hub. Well first it's gonna have a lot of people living there so we better give it some gravity, lets make it spin. Right it needs to stay stationary so pilots always know where to find it so we might as well sell those thrusters. Finally we're going to want to keep a atmosphere in there so the loading bay can deal with damaged ships. Lets add a big shield door. Hmm, oh wait. This is now a space station.

In the world you're picturing, there seems to be no populace on a station that you actually provide with the wares you sell, and noone to produce the ones you buy. Also, in your world, pilots apparently live in their cockpits 24/7. They've probably got tubes sticking up their *boop* for nutrition and waste disposal. Because, with your hands constantly on the controls, how are you gonna to eat? In the present day, this counts as torture, of course, but in 3300 should be enlightened enough to be over that. ;)

Docking and launching is fun. And it feels good to go in the hangar for a change from flying around in space. It nicely seperates buying, selling, taking missions and so on from the other parts of the game too. And it keeps the basic game loop running.

Simple, I like landing at stations and platforms

I like the casual 'supermarket' tannoy telling entering without permission will see me destroyed, have a nice day!!

They look cool, massive, functional

The fact they are not just passive, you mess with them then they mess you up. Watching a station go into combat closeup is pretty cool

i want somewhere to park up too

For one thing unless they have developed a method of sending messages through hyper space then information only travels as fast as a courier can deliver it so the internet would be impractical.
Without stations just where would all those commodities be stored...just dumped in orbit waiting for drones to come pick it up or deliver it to your cargo hold.....again..impractical.
Until some lucky sot can afford a "Capital" ship to do business at what happens till then?

No...stations are an integral and essential part of ED and should be.

Also, like millions of people live in those stations. Not everyone in the universe is a pilot, therefore their goods need to be delivered and distributed amongst them. They literally cannot fly out and scoop them, that is your job seeing as you are the pilot.

What would any sci fi series be without a nice space station...
A station allows me to dock, go make a cuppa and get pie without the need to log out or leave my ship as floating pirate bait
Also if we scooped cargo for trading, instead of picking it up at a station, it would all be stolen!

well so far on the good and fun list.

Fun to dock and launch.
Fun to look at during combat.
Good parking spot.
Nostalgia.

I am still waiting for the contributing to gameplay part.
- how cool it would have been if they where social hubs, where u could chat up with players... that would be really neat(just a thought)

hehe dude if the have interstellar travel the have comms...
it is way easier sending impulses rather than heavy matter through Space.. :)
Systems relays would do.. so you would only get updates, once you drop out of SC/Jump..

I dont really care if stations are Cap ships, Players owned etc...
I just fail to see the fun in them, and i fail to see why i have to travel 10LY after a mission to shake hands with guy that will pay me for doing so.
in my mind its just silly.

But the thread was kinda to take in all aspects, there might be stuff i dont see, dont know

I'm having good fun whenever I see someone "weaker" trying to enter a station when I'm about to exit in my Type 7. Activate afterburner, all power to shields, wait for the *pop*.

OK so it seems, by your last statement, what you are/were asking is how can we make stations fun...correct?
A social hub is a nice idea, the only downside I can see is that there probably aren't that many people in dock at any one time.
As I said, I go make a cuppa come back record some prices, look at trade routes and read Galnet. Very relaxing after a hard day behind the stick.
.
Stations are an integral part of any space game, having trouble thinking of one that doesn't have them, at least one with ships in.
If you like combat and not wasting time doing other things then maybe, and this is a serious comment not a brush off, you would be better in a game like War Thunder.
Actually I would be up for a space War Thunder myself :)

In the game lore we are playing in, this is simply not true. Like Angorak said, signals/impulses do not travel through hyperspace. This is also reflected in some of the ED books I've read. Probably something to do with hyperspace not being a place you enter but a state of space time your fsd creates. I guess a system relay could be an entity you download/upload to, but you still need ships travelling there to do it.

As for stations, landing and launching is gameplay and I also like it.
I also like the fact you can race into a station with minutes of O2 left after a fight.
I also love the sound after the emptiness of space.

A cosy little man cave, a place to unpack a few of those nubile young slaves in the hold....(hey I think I get roleplaying now)

May have a look at War Thunder.
Was missing a station badly last Night as i ran out of fuel in a stationless system :) nemesis

i like to look at stations. i love un/docking. i love the sound and overall atmosphere while being docked in a station. and they give a feeling of "coming home" after having achieved something (mission, trading, etc). it's like the game giving me a pat on the back. HOORAY STATIONS!

i'm sure in the next couple of months / years they'll make in-station interactions more 'interesting' for those who feel they're lacking at the moment.

Not only that but in most of these stations you can sit down to have a nice cuppa. Not all repairs can be handled automatically. Working with fluids is easier in a pressurised environment with an acceleration field, and all your tools handily lay on the ground just where you left them. Even manoeuvring large components is easier with a partial amount of G. In freefall there's always a chance that something heavy will slip out of reach of your fingertips and can be a pain to retrieve, especially if it has a bit of momentum in it.
