I am speaking about all the people crying about griefers and the frankly crazy and hysterical "You're not going to be able to enforce PvP on other people in this game!"-comments (which all too often sound as if in-game killings are akin to murder and assault in real-life).
You know what? PvP SHOULD BE FORCED IN ONLINE MODE. There I said it.
You have already the solo mode for the pure space trucking, - the online multplayer mode is, well, Elite being ONLINE and this should be embraced. In all Elite games, there are NPC pirates, so it's logical that in the ONLINE version of it, at least of the pirates should be human players. This is what adds dynamic to the game!
Feared pirates add the need for protection (players playing police and bodyguards), crime adds the need for law enforcement (bounty hunters), all this protection needs to be paid by the traders. The pirates in turn feed by the traders. Classical sheep/shepard/wolf dynamic. Take any of these factors out, and the sheep are free to reign and the game becomes an utter bore.
I am not a pirate myself, but it's obvious how a completely peaceful universe would kill the game. EVERY SPACE GAME HAS PIRATES OR HOSTILE ALIENS. Why is it such a deal for some that in this ONLINE GAME these hostile forces should be human players? Have you never wondered when you played Elite and its sequels how cool it would be if the other traders AND pirates would be other players? I don't even consider this "PVP", because the dynamic of this game is different to themepark MMOs like WOW. It's more like PVE with human antagonists - because unlike MMOs with dedicated dungeons etc. the whole environment in a space trade game MUST be dangerous because the loot gaining (credits) happens throughout the open universe also. With no genuine danger in the environment there would be no need for better ships and better lasers (and no need to bound in wings either). seriously, why do you need to upgrade when you have no obstacle to overcome?
If Frontier continues to cozy up the "griefer"-paranoid (like the ban-lists and private groups) then this game will be doomed. The sandbox elements are pretty limited already, removing any meaningful danger from Elite Dangerous would completely transform it into Space Trucker online.
