I've been to Sol once in the Beta and once in Full Release. No more than 10 minutes each time. There's absolutely no reason to be there for more than the sake of saying you've been there.

Don't you need a permit for Sol?
Certain kickstarter backer levels got you this by default.
New players will have to earn it in game.
Is this right? I think it is.

Spawned 200Ly away...I eventually went there, saw how it is just another system, and left... no interest in it unless something really special should happen.

Really? Never heard of that.

I don't really get why so many people have flocked to the one place in the galaxy that we've all already been to.

Based on the pole. Not many at all.

I would however love to see people flock to one place. This would mean more human interaction and more things affected by players and not AI.

One of the creepiest avatars you have there.

Went for a look around, it's neat seeing recognisable constellations and astronomical bodies but didn't have any reason to stay after a bit of sightseeing.

How do everyone else get one?
We rank up with the Federation. You'll get the permit within 3-4 missions for them. Nothing difficult, just deliver item A to location B. I've amassed 4 different permits by now, is a Warrant Officer, and only one mission have included using my guns. On the other hand, it was shooting a traiterous general who was being ferried around in a Fed Dropship. It did not go down fast or easy, but eventually I got it to disappear in a puff of smoke and flame.

As for the OP: Those that do play in open, like me, are spread around. Quite a lot hang out around Lave due to having nostalgic memories of that location and its surroundings in the original Elite. A large number of players are also hanging around in Evil Empire space. Don't ask why. Yes sure, maybe they are drooling to get an Imp Cruiser, or maybe they are just less morally endowed and hence fit right in.

Myself, I'm on the border between the Feds and the Imps - making my moneys doing trade whilst slowly transforming my Cobra into a formidable fighting machine. A little bit more, and I'll start infracting seriously into Imp space. Heat up the cold war a little :)

Sol isn't that far off though come to think of it. some 70-80LY 'up' from my main base.

By far the busiest systems I've been in are the Alliance systems clustered around Lave, but I'm sure there are busier ones judging by the threads talking about how some stations are too busy to dock at.

I've got Federal permits for several systems now, including Sol. I never went to any of them. I am not really interested in progressing my military rank and most importantly I do not expect to find anything more interesting or special in Sol or other systems.
I hope FD will add special and unique space stations and other stuff to certain systems to give them a special flavor. Then I will surely visit them. As they are now I am not interested.

Just do some naval progression missions. It is easy. Before you know it the Feds make you an admiral :).
