Is it griefing? (Shower Thoughts)

About a week ago I pulled into a nice quite corner of Empire space and started a pretty good trade run between 4-5 systems It was/is great for Rep building and all that jazz. When I first arrived system traffic was at about 40-50 ships per day mostly Cobras a few Asps and an Anaconda or two. Over the last few days I've been seeing a lot more PC's and have noticed that Traffic report at most stations are in the 250-350 visitors range. Lots of T6's and T7's, they have yet to effect my trade routes yet. But I find myself growing less excited to see other PC's, and I'm really starting to think about attacking them. Not really to pirate their goods or anything, just to chase them off and be territorial. Is that wrong? I know it's very Grumpy Old Man like, but I think I would be well within my rights to do so, as anyone would be well within theirs to do it to me.

I know the question "Is that wrong?" is pretty hypothetical. Anyone I attack can play solo, making it totally pointless to attack them. I'm just curious about how the people here feel about it.

In reality, I'll probably just move on. I've Allied all the systems I wanted to in the area and would like to move to a different sector anyway.

Do you use any online trade tools? I wonder if those tend to lure people lazy to do OCR into your area? And you can only chase those people into the solo mode anyway, so griefing or not it is pointless.

Wow that is a pretty interesting scenario I hadn't thought about before. I'd say if you think you have enough firepower to be a deterrent then go for it, you do have valid reasons. You could throw in a couple of IMs like "this is my turf", "You are not welcome to trade in here" yadda yadda, just to keep anyone from suggesting you're just doing it for the lulz.

...sounds like a drug dealer trying to protect his turf. ;)

No, it's not wrong, it's not griefing, it's just playing the game.

As far as I am concerned, it is not griefing to designate a few sectors as your own and play pirate in them. I doubt you will have much effect, but you play the game your own way and if you want to start a toll booth, or merely wee on stuff to tell people it is yours then that is your choice. Have fun with it, wear a flamboyant hat. As other people have pointed out, this has no effect on those in solo play.

Doesn't really achieve much, just pushes them into solo mode to destroy your trade route in the same way.

Population migration ! It's shaped the world as we know it today

history tells that those who stay and fight disappear from the history record. Those who themselves migrate stand a chance of survival

Since you aren't planning on griefing anyone, it probably isn't griefing. And while I haven't run into any other players since my first day, i have that heard spaceships shooting each other is a part of this game.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up. +1

Like I said I'll probably move on, if I started attacking people I'd have to get off my lawn chair, set my beer down, and learn how to interdict people. Sounds like a lot of work when I can just move 5 jumps North, South , East, or West and plant a new dirt patch to set my chair in. I'm glad to see everybody is pretty much in agreement here. Nope not griefing, just a waste of time/energy.

Of course, if you're just doing this to players and not NPCs....

Can you provide any evidence that shooting NPC's deters other NPC's from entering an area?

It's only sensible to concentrate efforts on the section of the population you can influence.

You could park you ship across the letter box and be like Nope. YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!!!!!!!! and pound your staff into the ground

Does it matter if it's 'right' or 'wrong' - you are playing a game, I wouldn't get too hung up on the morality of it. - Treat it like an RTS and defend your territory!
