Best ship for trade and fighting?

Is there a best ship for trade and fighting, or do you just buy what you can afford and keep upgrading? I was liking the cobra MK3, but the viper... (I'm still in my sidewinder.)

The ASP Explorer has enough cargo space (88t is common) for rares trading and is very capable in combat. You're looking at 20m+ for a well equipped one though. Base ship is 6.6m.

Love my Asp. I've got it outfitted with 72t of Cargo, B's and C's in most of the modules (including Advanced and Detailed scanners and a FSD interdictor). It does fantastic at all the missions and trading. Don't have to worry about being jumped by anything less than a Python or Anaconda (and can outrun those). According to the trade in calculator, I've got just over $12m into it.

I put a class B FSD into it (can't afford A yet) and can jump ~20LY fully loaded.

The adder (apparently) if you are poor. Then the Cobra when you have a bit more money (even with class D gear they are ok), then the Asp when you are rich, then when you have hundreds of millions get a python.

There you are; your whole career mapped out for you ;)

Seriously though, the Cobra is easily the best single ship in the game, and yes I am talking bang for the buck. A cheapish one can survive anything it can't kill, and a 7MCr Cobra is much deadlier then a 14 MCr Asp.

This is exactly what I needed to know. I'm over $110,000 now, so once I get to 200,000 (hopefully tonight) then I'll get the hauler and work up from there. :)

I don't like that the info in the shipyard doesn't show how much cargo space, speed ect. Also when upgrading parts, I would like to know distance on frameshift drives and other info like that.

You just buy what you can afford. With that budget, look for an Adder. You can pot some shots and Haul some tons. Later Cobra, then Asp, then eventually different dedicated ships. I trade in an L7 but keep my nearly 3m Viper nearby for fighting.

Someday, Python. This is not that day. The game is less fun if you are grinding flat-out to get some large ship. Just play, fly what you can afford, and have fun.

The Python is hands down the best ship if you want to trade and fight at the same time, and it can land at every station and outpost. The only bad thing about the Python is the laden jump range is not so great. Around 13.5LY laden, and 20LY unladen with the 5A FSD (it uses the same engine as the Asp, but weighs 4 times as much!).

Asp is a great do-it-all ship too.

But from where you are right now the obvious upgrade is a cobra... A fantastic all rounder with huge upgrade potential

Adder is a good choice right now. How much should i save to put into it to start? Of coarse I'll need money for ship, upgrades, and cargo. I can start with 90,000 for 10 tons of gold, since that's one of my trades in the sidewinder...then add cargo bays as I go.

I went Sidey (1 day), Hauler (3-4 days), Cobra (for 3-4 weeks) and yesterday Type 6. With http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk I found a 1m/hour trading route with 4 stops that I'm gridning to get the Asp.

Once I'm there - I'll sit back and enjoy the galaxy. Most likely pimping it out for exploration and then going to the other side of the galaxy.

The Asp
is the second comming. It will fully equipped cost more than 50 Mill.
Basic is 6 mill, but that is rubbish, dont even consider Asp before you have 20 mill.
But upgraded with Beams an military Armour this thing blows most stuff to atoms, and fast too.

Cheers Cmdr's

How much do you make per ton in that route? When you say 4 stops, do you mean docking and trading at each stop, or just jumping to the next system? I was at $1,850 per ton doing round trip with 2 jumps, but tweaked that route and added a stop (docking and trading) in one of the same systems in my route. That puts me at 2115 per ton per trip for a 3 way trade.

Cobra mk3, small pad footprint allows it to dock at all stations, fittings highly flexible allowing a good mix of mission varity. wing mounts need to be gimble/turret or missile. it was the elite ship of old for reason. asp is very good, but you'll get a high cobra for the hull of an asp..
