Gimbled vs Fixed weapons

Gimbled weapons are slightly weaker than their fixed counterparts but have the target tracking capability.

What are people's views on this? What would you fit to your ship?

I have been fitting Gimble Multi-Cannons, they seem ideal for smaller quick maneuvering targets but larger ships I think Fixed would be good.

Gimbals are great for infighting but you really feel the pain at range and wish for fixed.

I use gimbals because I mostly do infighting.

Depends on what I am flying - eagle and viper fixed but the cobra on the outer pylons I use gimb as with fixed unless its an anaconda your shooting one shot always seems to miss.

Disadvantages of using gimballed:
- highly vulnerable to chaff launchers
- inaccurate above 1km, especially against small ships
- less hit damage

They're good when a) your aiming is not good and you don't hit with fixed anyway and b) when you are more maneuverable than you opponent and keep him in sight during loops. On the other hand people tend to escape far more easily because if they manage to build up a distance to you your damage output is rather low.

On some ships you have no choice anyway because the weapons are not centered and you can't use fixed at all.

Edit to answer the second question: I use fixed if I can because my aim is pretty good and opponents have a much harder time to escape. Either they get above 3km so I can't hit them anymore or I get full damage output. But on some ships as I said you are forced to you gimballed anyway.

If you can shoot straight and are in a ship at least as manouverable and fast as your opponent then fixed is better than gimbled. There are some ships (Cobra for example) where the mounting of weapons makes getting all fixed weapons on target at the same time tricky so gimbled can help. Finally splitting direct fire and projectile weapons means you have two points to aim at so gimbling can help but only if you want to fire both at the same time.

Hope that helps...

Theo nly time I have fitted gimballed weapons is on the outer hardpoints on my Cobra, because it is the only way to get them to both hit a target reasonably close to you that is smaller than an Orca or a Dropship.

I run fixed multicannons and railguns on my viper, significant damage difference from the fixed MC's alone when compared to their gimballed counterparts, least as far as i have seen

I prefer gimballed, particularly projectile weapons if combined with fixed lasers, else there is no way to land them both on a target that is turning.

Now I use a viper with 2 gimballed lasers (1 pulse, 1 beam both class 2) and 2 gimballed multi-cannons (class 1).
Even attacking big ships they come in handy at close range when I slide under their belly to get to their tail : the gimbal keeps them targeted even if my nose is past their tail when they try to get away from me, a fixed one would be missing the target there.

On an eagle I use a fixed laser and 2 gimballed multicannons.
Used in the past fixed multicannons on a cobra, but did not find that particularly effective, too many issues in landing shots with them.

I usually use gimbaled, but if I know I'm picking up a mission to kill such and such and it'll be big (python, dropship, anaconda) I'll refit to fixed. Once you get in close with some fixed beans and cannons, pop some chaff and you tear them up.

Hi All,

Varies for me based on what I need/want/aim to do.

Fixed weaposn that track ahead of the target such as cannon with gimbals work well together. Gimbals on the lower hardponits, cannons above means you follow the ship upwards tracking ahead placing the target in the arc of the limited traversal lower hardpoints. This worked well for me on Cobra and Viper in Beta and Gamma, allowing me to take a range of opponents on.

I recently purchased a Cobra, but I have spent Gamma mostly in an Adder. I liked it a lot, spent most of the time with gimbaled Multi-cannon and Gimbaled Pulse. Bounty Hunting was anything up to Cobra, I left bigger fish (I mean snakes) alone. I did use 2 x cannon and 1 x gimbaled beam to complete a "kill adminral x" mission. The MCG/Laser combo made me a little direct without a lot of punch. The Feds kept turning up and I kept accidentally shooting one of them. To kill the bigger ship I used Fixed laser and Cannon. Better firepower, but I had to be in close and the adder is not the greatest turner.

From a fighter point of view, you feel the loss of damage with gimbals when your target is large, but up to Cobra, where ships dart around Gimbals give you a better hit percentage, and at least for me kill the opponent slightly quicker.

On no.............. not again...................Ban all weapons.

Pops off to get popcorn.

To be fair, the OP wasn't offering an opinion on gimballed weapons one way or the other. He or she merely made a factual observation about gimballed weapons, and was asking for people's thoughts (discussion).

I understand your reaction (because of certain other threads on this topic), but this doesn't seem to be one of those threads (yet). So perhaps we can just discuss the topic in a civilised manner?

My input is that I prefer fixed weapons generally for their reliability and aiming skill requirement, except on the outer hardpoints of the Cobra (as another poster mentioned), where gimballed weapons are better.

I use fixed weapons only. My aim is lousy, but I feel gimbals are teaching me bad habits an it certainly won't improve if I use them. Due to the lack of a convergence slider, gimbals are a necessity on some ships, but I rather forego on flying the respective ships rather than using gimballed weapons (one of the reasons I don't buy a Clipper).
