In a Hauler, want to make cash

I have 64,000 credits and my hauler can have 20 tonnes of cargo. I want to obviously get a bigger and better ship for doing trading. I am in Hach at the moment doing trading runs within 20 light years. These runs probably make me ~ 8,000 credits per run.

So, question is, how do I improve my profit margin to get into a better ship with more cargo space?

Slowly work your way up to a Cobra and then get over to Lave area and trade Rares.

Or equip for mining and find a pristine reserve and mine Paladium

there will be different answers....

Here's how I did it: I ran cargo missions between 2 stations (outposts only!) one jump each other.... once they went green (happy with me), I started the missions where they ask you to find xyz parts in xyz system... this was for me the fastest way to get up on money! Then I bought the CobramK3, fittet it with (48?) cargo, and did the same missions. Then I searched comodities with 1k/ton, and went slowly up to a lacon-t6 (a few days and lots hours gaming!).
After that, I went to the ASP (earned with trading in the Lacon T6 with 112cargo).... over 15 hours with it! :)

Now, maybe some others had faster ways for that :)

Save up, buy and do a few upgrades with an adder. It's not that expensive and alot better than a standard hauler.

Find a better trading route.

Look at metal vs imperial slaves runs with one jump in imperial system. The "ium" metals are interesting (gallium, berrilium, indium and so on) and slaves... it's the empire, half of the stations sell slaves and the other half want them :D

It's not the best trading sheme ever but there is plenty available and you can get ~1000 creds / ton without searching too hard.

I strapped a mining laser to my Hauler and strictly mined Gold (9-10k/ton), Palladium (13-15k/ton) and Platinum (17-20k/ton) only. Didn't take many loads until I had my Cobra, where I did the same thing until my Lakon6. Think about 3 days in game? Took a lot of patience but you'll only make money trading when you can start hauling bulk (or if you find rares - which I haven't :()

Put a gimballed cannon on it, point defence, chaff, and multiple shield cell boosters, with the best shield gen you can afford, and find a warzone. BE AN INDIVIDUAL! :D

1. Upgrade your equipment to D level modules
2. Upgrade your fsd to C
3. Trade rares
( I love the rare trading mechanic- it isn't just profitable, it's also very easy to role play what with the multi port routes and the large distances involved!)

The side benefit of this is that you will visit a lot of systems and up your explorer rank with not much effort.

I ha ve been doing similar to this except my fsd is an A gives me nearly 30ly empty and nearly 20 full, my problem is the route planing is all based on my original jump specs so limits all jumps to around 12 ly and nav panel does the same, finally half the potential routes are not even shown if there is a jump required larger than 12ly as it thinks I cant make teh trip

i found a rare trade route early today :D currently earning 283k from and 233k back with a hauler with 20t cargo. but its like a total of 18 jumps and have to stop halfway to fuelscoop.

This is a loss of time.... better earn half of it and do it 3 times faster..... what counts is not how much you earn on a travel, bu how fast you eearn credits in time...

On the navigation tab there is a pair of check boxes.

One says "Economical Routes", the other "Fastest Routes"

If you have it on Economical Routes, it will hold down the jump distances to keep you in the lower fuel per LY costs of shorter jumps. Fuel usage increases greatly near your maximum range. "Fastest Routes" will ignore fuel consumption and use your maximum jump range for planning.

Or use the cmdr one and keep the window open alongside...

Must admit i hadnt thought of getting less for rares but more often. Must try that!

Seems low to me I had a hauler and found a route for gold that was giving me around 18000k profit for a Run of two jumps and a long 400k haul to a station. I have a reporter note pad that I keep By the comp for jotting down prices every where I go*, every now and then you will find a good route and be able to coin it in.

handy for jump routes as well

Maybe you forgot to check the "Fast route" option?
