Roadmap after release

I think there are essential features that are still work in progress and it would be more transparent to communicate the features that teams within FD have on their backlog for ED.

That's how star citizen works and each team gives a monthly overview of their efforts so if done the same for ED then we'd a all know that the programmers are working on things the community feel are important.

A roadmap is just a way to be shot down for not delivering.

Dear Frontier, we really need a roadmap.

Just a shout out to all those wonderful people working on this marvelous game. i was wondering if you guys could tally up a roadmap of features your putting into the game, the order in which they are being added and the time frame in which you will be adding them. i know this would alleviate a lot of the doubts and stress people are having about the games development at the moment. thanks for listening in :).

While I would also much appreciate a roadmap to see where Frontier is planning to take the game, it would open another can of worms. The moment Frontier deviates even the slightest bit from the plan, there will be endless accusations of them breaking promises, them abandoning the game and so on... With this kind of community, why would they want to put themselves into that situation? I wouldn't.

In my Job, I have a roadmap for customers and an internal REAL roadmap! - No way would I show anyone the internal, REAL roadmap. Just a big fat no.

A roadmap that is published would depend on having a rational, reasonable customer base that understands what a non-contractural list of intentions is.

Unfortunately, we don't have that.

It's like comfy seats in a sports stadium - makes your bottom feel squishy during the match but doesn't affect the outcome. I'd rather they spend their money on building the game (or winning, to follow the analogy).

It gets to the heart of relationships between builders and users. We don't have the context to understand an internal roadmap, and the external roadmap is a customer relations exercise that costs the builders money and makes a few users feel better.

I trust them. I don't give a flying flipper what they choose to do first - I just want them to do it rather than spend time telling us they're doing it. :)

The DDF has been archived but it is the roadmap.

I think they should get things back on track, besides that I have no idea what you are on about.

Gamma version worth buying / roadmap to features?

Hi there,

I love the whole space atmosphere graphically this game seems sweet, but when reading metacritic i read that many features are missing / the game play is repetitive. I have some questions:

Can anybody explain to me what the goal of this game is? What if you are filthy rich, what difference can you make compared to other players?

Best Regards,
Joris

What's the roadmap for E:D now?

Now that the retail version of E D has been released does anyone know if Frontier have released a roadmap on what's next?

Mining needs a major overhaul and it would be nice to see some events ejected into the persistent universe, like major fleet battles on schedules that players can join...

So two questions, does anyone know the roadmap, and what would you like to see next?

They haven't and I suspect they won't given how some people round here react when they fail to deliver on what they've previously said. Better for them if they say nothing concrete.

We do know that wings/grouping is a priority and should happen early this year. They still have 15 ships to add. They've said mining is bare-bones right now so I expect there will be additions to that. Passenger transportation should happen at some point. Longer term they've talked about being able to get out of your ship and walk around stations (i.e. a FPS mode) and planetary landings. Those are both expected to be purchasable expansions.

Personally I'd most like to see the remaining ships, multiple saves, more depth/logic in the naval ranking progression, and passenger transportation missions.

We know that Wings are coming in "early 2015", and that planetary landings are planned for the end of the year. We also know that the mac version is scheduled for mid february give or take a few weeks.

The lead designer said there was a lot more on the plan, but didn't give details of what it will be. Just said "Watch the newsletters"

From newsletter 49:

"After the 16th December we will continue to update with more polish and content such as the playable ships we committed to in our Kickstarter campaign – in fact I’m delighted to be able to tell you that we are now planning to eventually have 30 playable ships in Elite: Dangerous, 5 more than we committed to in Kickstarter. And most exciting of all, we will start the work on a longer term roadmap that includes getting you up out of your pilot’s seats and out of your starships."

That implies they'll be developing their roadmap right about now. When or whether they'll share is anyone's guess.

While I'd love to know. I'm unfortunately in the position of hoping that they do not share upcoming plans. Simply because of the treatment that any alteration of a plan or slippage of a delivery date will attract on the forums.

That's how I see it too.

Some fans rated it 10/10 so it´s obviously finished - so, a roadmap what for?

ED 2 ?

For a start all backers purchased all future expansions, so a roadmap for these would be a good start, even if it's high level.

Then there's this from the Feature Requests Update thread, and I quote:

As many of you will have divined from what we have discussed so far, we’re hoping players will be in Elite: Dangerous for the long haul. This game isn’t being designed as a 10 hour romp through space, to be discarded after a weekend’s play through. We want to continue to expand and refine the game for years after release to make it as deep and enduring an experience as possible.

During Alpha, Beta and Gamma there were regular updates, it's a shame these have stopped.

Here's the list originally mentioned by Frontier, they never committed:
Landing / driving / prospecting on airless rocky planets, moons & asteroids
Walking around interiors and combative boarding of other ships
Combat and other interactions with other players and AIs in the internal areas of star ports
Accessing richly detailed planetary surfaces
Availability of giant ‘executive control’ ships to players

I'm not holding Frontier accountable for delivering the expansions, they've made a game that's polished and worth every penny. But the critics are saying the game is empty and needs finishing - it could do with more but personally I'm happy with the game as it is, excluding some minor issues like mining.

Check out this cool video from the Frontier team on what they plan for the future - or would like to do:
