With the complexity of work required, the deadline(s) looming and constant changes/updates, the pressure must be immense - do you manage to switch off from the development or do you fall asleep and wake up thinking about Elite D?

As a concept artist, do people tell you 'This is what I want go and draw it' or do you see a theme and draw what comes out of your imagination?

It's somewhere in the middle of that. As a project we know what we need to have in game so that defines what is most useful for us to put our time into.

We also have to consider which other people are coming to the end of their current task, for example getting another ship all designed and broken down for a modeller. Or maybe someone is in the middle of working up a design and now needs some input on landing gear or heatsinks etc. So that defines what is most pressing.

An important part of being a concept artist is communication across the team, and by extension a good art team needs to keep all those plates spinning.

You have to switch off from all projects and see the bigger picture and take in new inspiration or you'd end up burning out or drying up. Having said that I'm having a tonne of fun, and find it a great project to work on, I'm always thinking of sci fi stuff, I'm not sure how much of that is massive nerdery or drawing space all day. Probably a mix of the two.

Ramble ramble.

Josh.

Are you going to produce an employee tree with everybody s name in the correct department and we can then click on their name to see a photo along with a short profile and the q&a?
If we arranged something like Lave Con in Cambridge for the week after the game release, how many employees will want to turn up?
What level did you pledge at and why?

Here's one for the sound guys

The sound effect for the TIE Fighter apparently involved a manipulated recording of an elephant call, and the sound of a car's tyres driving along the road. How do you make sound effects for games nowadays? Is there still a lot of Foley work? Do you use digital libraries, software synthesisers, etc...

Were you all very nervous about the kickstarter campaign or completely confident of it's success?

Are there any games from the past that you really wished you had worked on either by Frontier or any other developer? Or any that have particularly inspired you?

What's your views on the new Xbox one? Good idea or have they lost touch with their core market?

Who's the office joker and are they as funny as they think?

Who has the worst dress sense and why?

Who can't handle their drink and makes a fool of themselves at the office Christmas Party?

A- tack, like blue tack, I've heard a variety of thoughts on the origin, the most concrete seems to be that it's olde english for at oak or under oak.

Is that 'A' as in Again or Attack or Atchoo or is it 'A' as in A Banana, A pair or A pain in the... neck!? ;)

Are there any things that the design team have wanted to put into the game that for any reason (time/technology etc.) haven't made it in? yet?

Question: Console gamer or PC?

Give reasons why please.

--------------

Console can include i-phone etc. PC is just PC.

So when will we get an Ashley Barley interview? After all your efforts appeasing the demanding community I'm sure we would produce some really flattering photoshops of you :D

Great! team
I wish I was part of the ED team :)

Great idea, Ashley! Looking forward to the results :) Now, some questions:

How much have you played the original games?
What's your favourite ship?

For coders:

What sorts of procedural algorithms are you using? Voronoi maps, Djikstra, CA, etc.
Is there any inheritance from Frontier and First Encounters' algorithms?

When will the next interview be issued?

I find them really interesting and have been looking forward to the next one.
