That Fer de lance, though!

I'm not very good at the potatochop but here's more how I remember/imagine the Fer-de-Lance.

Sleek, exotic, expensive, luxury, speed, extreme.

It needs something more on the backend though and a few bits to make it more interesting but I haven't the skill to do that. But essentially those big hauler type wings it currently has I don;t think should be there at all. Also I removed the backend top two rudder things as they made the hull look curved along the top which is not how I see the Fer-de-Lance, it needs angles.

Also maybe big massive powerful looking "air" inlets on those white panels that run down each side of the the upper hull, those two panels were the defining feature of the Fer-de-Lance, maybe accentuate them and make them part of the ship rather than just a paint job.

Also pointy nose!

Now that is bang on the money. Devs please, please take note!!

All these edits honestly look ugly to me. Too simplistic and non functional, especially if ships are ever supposed to enter any sort of atmosphere. The original picture looks the best

I do like the original. My only complaint is the profile is too similar to the Adder. These 2 ships should look completely different

Yup this is more like what I imagined the ship to be like!
I'm really lot impressed with the concept in the newsletter. It's not angry or deadly looking enough.

You know, I always thought bottom row, 1st on the left was the FdL, with it's size and what looks like single engine.
Seriously what ship IS that then?

Edit:

This is sexy

Agreed both the fan modded FDLs in this thread are more true to core design IMO.

There is a damn sexy ship in that FDL model just that she is a bit dulled down by the wings IMO which offers little benefit in space

I agree with this. I suspect some designs are being modified slightly with planet landings in mind.

In which case perhaps atmospheric flight modules (wings) could be something we could buy and add, and that would change the look of the ship OR they are deployable with a key press and slide out of the bottom of the plane.

In the image above where you can see the shadow I can imagine the wing deploying from compartments from the belly of the ship on entering atmosphere.

This is much more in line with what a FDL design should be (+rep). Sleek, luxurious, fast, lethal, desirable.

Definitely not the hauler MkII in the news letter.

I'm not a massive fan of this design, was expecting something a little deadlier looking, though I guess it fits more closely with current ship designs than what I had in mind.

What I would like to see is more animation in a ship, things like retractable wings, which are required for atmospheric flight but not so much in space. Just something to make a ship look more dynamic, rather than a static block.

Will await further images of the FdL... I do like the engine slants, I think it's the flat undercarriage that does look too much like a hauler that doesn't sit right with me so far.

I have seen those patrolling around Station as system security ships, cant remember where but I think it was federation system, seen Imperial fighters too, i might be able to verify system for those when i get in game.

This is the one for me, just retract the wings into the belly when not in atmosphere as suggested. It retains all the style and detailing of ED, but it's also the original sleek pointy Ferdy.

This is what I want:

Sales assistant - Good morning sir. And how may I be of service
MrR - I'm looking for a fighter craft.

Sales assistant - Ah Sir. You have come to the right place. May I interest you in a Viper? A great little number that one.
MrR - No thanks. It's a little small.

Sales assistant - Ah, you'll be wanting a Cobra then. Large cargo bay, 4 hardpoints to unleash hell. Sir. Opinions?
MrR - Ho hum. I said FIGHTER. No a "Jack of all trades"! Larger does sound better however. Did I say I have MONEY????

Sales assistant - Sir. The only real option for you now is the Asp. It's HUGE. 6 hardpoints. Yes 6. Lots of cargo. Utility slots GALORE!!! Sir. We have a winner.
MrR - CARGO. NO!!!!!! I WANT A FIGHTER!

Sales assistant - Well sir. You seem like a discerning gentleman. I'll let you in on our little secret. We have today taken delivery of a BRAND NEW ship. It is rather expensive but she is a beauty. Her name is the Fer-de-Lance.
Mr R - Go on..........

Sales assistant - She's fast, agile, Lots of lower class slots. GREAT shields. 6 Hardpoints: 2 LARGE, 4 medium. Only three times more than the Asp - but I feel you'll be happy. Did I say she was a mover? Suits you Sir!
Mr R. Finally. Yes. I'll take 2!!

Ditch the wings, the Fer de Lance is meant to be a sleek luxury fortress not a planetary shuttle. In original Elite the Lance's long snout made it easy to hit in turning fights, the Mamba was the same. Those broad wings make it even more of a soft target.

When its bigger like with the wings it get more of a "kinder" rounder look. Dont get me wrong the model is top notch, but without the wings it looks sleeker and more agressive. Looking forward to it, and hope its not too expensive. :)
