Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread [See new thread]

Who chooses to play open, wants to experience a universe that seems more alive. But he gets punished with a higher risk in core systems. I don't think more risk is necessarily bad, if it is compensated with additional rewards. But I really would prefer an additional mode, that is multiplayer only and does not allow switiching, so that I can be sure, any other pilot I play with hasn't been hiding in solo at any time. Hiding in solo at the beginning and switching to open when you have your full fletched anaconda is too meta to me.

For curiosity's sake, is the Solo/Open/Group dynamic in this game something that is subject to change? Are the developers actually watching this and seriously considering altering how the matchmaking and shared galaxy work? Or is this really just a tidy corner to keep all the deceased mammal abuse and unproductive circular debate on this issue from clogging the forums?

I just wonder because if it is subject to change and the devs are actively considering that then I feel I have a duty to continue banging my head against this wall. If its certainly not going to change Id like to know that now so I can just forget about this topic forever.

+1
I suspect this is just a pressure release valve, because the game design hasn't changed at all since last Summer, and no FDEV has ever hinted that it would change. Imagine the reaction of the Kickstarter backers who made the game possible in the first place, if the core design concept changed post-release.

The "squeaky wheels" will continue to post, but at this point it's like going over to a World of Warcraft forum and demanding they shut down all the PvE servers.

Still, it would be nice to get some FDEV feedback. By remaining silent, it suggests they're just trying to sell more copies of the game to people who are hoping it might change. All they'd have to do is make one brief post in the forum, stating their intentions to keep the current design or leaving open the possibility of change. One post would do it.

As I have found over my fun in Open, even though I have only seen 4 Human CMRD ships, Open play seems to have much bigger rewards than being in Solo play.

I do not see Solo play as being easy just because there is no PVP, its actually harder because the rewards are less.

I have just had a 75 k bounty on 1 single ship, which isn't that much for open play because you can get much much more. But in Solo play the max I have had is about half that.

Its a shame that words, even meant to describe something in a innocent manor, can be interoperated differently throughout the world. I enjoy this game a lot, but when it comes to balance within this game I feel that Solo players doing pve do get the least amount of profit from bounty hunting.

Your reward is playing the game with others. Isn't that what multiplayer is all about? The reward is inherent to the game mode. You don't need to get anything else.

For the people who think it's weird that an incentive for open play is objected to By solo/group players, how would you feel about a solo/group-only incentive added to the game?

In any case: ED is not a competitive game, and I don't see a problem with the existence of the modes, the ability to switch at will, nor the perceived mass of solo-only players. As this is the status quo, the onus is on the ones wanting to change to prove there is a problem before offering solutions.

Hiding in solo at the beginning and switching to open when you have your full fletched anaconda is too meta to me and leads to a pvp only culture.

This is really some kind of persecution complex. A few might do it, and so what? But I believe that the majority who play solo aren't doing it to "hide". It is simply the way they enjoy to play the game like, say... the classic Elite games! Most of these people, including me, will probably never come with their ill gotten, frightening, fully decked out Anacondas and kill you when you least expect it. So cast away your fears and enjoy your multiplayer.

While I agree that it's awesome to give player choise on how to play, sadly players aren't mature enough and they abuse the system.

From:
- going to solo when they are interdicted;
- going solo when entering/exiting stations full of players;
- making the fortune on the risk-free environment of solo, then coming to online.

While the last one is a bit tochy, since they won't have the skill to take on real players, they do have the entire fortune to waste.

Freedom always comes with a price, and I would hate to see either side hurt.

Perhaps add a fee to every switch, a % of the player account?

Or tokens that replenish every 48h or more, you switch, you need to wait 48h to switch again.

I really don't know, we could also have locked accounts. But at this time it would annoy a lot of people xp

I disagree. It is not enough for me to compensate. Solo players are rewarded to the same extend as they don't have to play with others. But they have a far lower risk to deal with.

Once again the 'hiding in solo' argument. Ok, so once again then... I can stay in open, in an area away from the core systems and build myself the same mega-ship I can by staying in solo. There is no difference. Chances of even meeting another player, never mind anyone who wants to pvp are so slim as to be negligible. And on top of that. Please explain how anyone is going to even know how I got my ship?

I've changed my mind completely on adding an extra incentive for Open play (such as an increased monetary reward).

I think we should instead:

  • Have much higher fines for murdering CLEAN players
    • Pirate murders trader. > Pirate get's 5k fine. > Trader loses potentially MILLIONS. > Trader grudgingly goes to solo.
  • Have trade insurance for traders (this is rumored already I think..?)

This way, solo is not at a disadvantage, and Open play is more appealing for all types of players.

Didn't think i would be after seeing your other posts but +1 to that!

There is no 'far lower risk'. Please explain how you came to this assumption that the risk is 'far lower'.

Stop your personal insults!

I don't want that. I would prefer a fair game where no one does such a thing.

They won't be hurt by an additional mode. They can still play as they play now. Don't see your point tbh.

Because human behavior is far more unpredictable than that of NPCs. At least for me it is.

Frequently encountering a fully decked out super ship bought for with solo mode play is as likely to happen to a open-only player as it is likely that a solo player entering into open play will be randomly ganked upon within minutes. That is, exceedingly unlikely.

I don't have a problem with the game and the way I set it, the "worlds" are set in stone.

When ED was slated for release we had four options to choose from: offline, solo, private or open

Obviously, the offline mode has been nixed and FD has to refund the money back to those consumers.

As of now every other mode works, open play people, mainly the PVP and pirate cowards are angry because people are smart and they want to trade from the safety of solo / private, which as their choose. If FD goes and change how open, solo and private works now, after release they'll be in for more trouble, as once again they would be changing how the game works, meaning they would have to give refunds to those who feel like its a bait and switch.

I joined for SOLO and PRIVATE, I see no reason why any style should be penalized, as they all work. However, if that happens then yes I will join the many who file for refunds and leave this game. I joined to play the way I want, not to be forced to play the way someone else wants.

Hiding in solo at the beginning and switching to open when you have your full fletched anaconda is too meta to me.

That argument always comes up and I've never understood the logic. A player who grinds up to an Anaconda only in Solo mode is learning to fight NPC's. They'll lose that ship very quickly when they finally switch to Open and meet players who have been learning how to fight other players.

If that Anaconda player has developed no contacts with other players while in Solo mode, he'll also be facing Wings in Open mode soon enough. You don't learn anything about multi-ship tactics in Solo mode.

In short, there is no advantage to getting your Anaconda in Solo mode and then switching to Open for pew pew action.

Stop your personal insults!

I can assure that you are not special enough to warrant insulting - no harm intended! :) It was not an insult, but rather a comment on this general line of thinking that keeps popping up.

"Oh noes, people go and build mega ships in solo mode to hunt me/us down in open mode".
It starts to sound a little paranoid, to be frank. I am also quite interested in some hard data on why solo mode is perceived by some to be this care-free land of milk, honey and practically free Anacondas. That's not my experience from playing.

Personally if they wanted to introduce a locked in all online it would not bother me with no mode switching so long as it was on top of the current all...

Just bear in mind with iron man supposedly on the way your mode would be diluting the potential player pool that you would possibly be making even more of a pve experience than people are already seeing (and unhappy about) even now.

Like I said I have no issue with it but after you have deleted your save and started again and you realise you hardly see anyone........ Well the old addage be careful what you wish for IMO.

Also.. The notion of higher risk is only because the game is not quite working as advertised. The idea behind all was supposed!y where humans work together and where killing pilot federation members was rare and meaningful. Maybe wings will make the vision come closer to reality or maybe it won't but if it does I think you will see more people play in all.

The fact that you seem to see all as this super dangerous mode says to me you see humans as competitors to kill or be killed. If all does end up like that I will be joining the Möbius group all of the time.... I have not joined it yet as am not ready to give up on ALL but I want cooperation and in lore advasaral roles and will go where I can to get it. My understanding was that would be what all is. Time will tell but that is not what was happening around my neck of the woods over the weekend which is why I dropped to solo.
