Hey there :D

I was talking with someone here about roleplaying in Elite once the multiplayer features get more fleshed out, and I'm curious how many of you pilots out there have an interest on such a thing.
Feel free to vote and explain why you lean one way or the other ^^

I RP, a little too much, to the point I delete my save and start again if I die. I'm not allied to any faction, I'm just out to get rich for my own gain, the universe can sort all their bickering out themselves, I will watch from the confines of my multi-billion credit mansion, well, if I didn't keep dying that is.

I voted for yes, but in my experience although RP has been great fun with pen and paper, D&D, Cyberpunk, Paranoia, etc... On-line multiplayer RP is usually an instant immersion breaker. I have learned this over and over again. Which is a shame because I largely enjoyed the original Elite because I got into my character as a commander lots.
Maybe the grouping mechanism and the lack of global chat and guilds might make it work in ED. Here's hoping.

*High-Five*

I imagine I could get into it - but before that the Game would have to actually allow doing that (outside of "imagining doing it in your head").

And I'm not really talking about "Forum weirdos" *g*, the Game itself has to give some Options which it then has to reflect.

i.e. "Protectors of the System" must be able to link into Police comms, Scanner Data, Crime Data and gang up with regular Security NPCs or Players.
i.e. "Smugglers of the Galaxy" must be able to purchase Blackmarket Trade data etc.. they'd probably also like to see a passive detection warning (Sensor indicating the current likelyhood of getting detected/scanned)

You know, kind of telling either a Station (in the Blackmarket or legal Contacts) or the Ship what you intend to do - and see its Onboard Systems and Data available adapt to your goals & methods.
Absolutely!
:)

Yep, RP is lots of fun and ED is just made for it.. or will be, when the Wings are out and we have more opportunities to engage with other players, form mercenary groups, pirate groups, trading guilds etc. Now there is way too little RPG-friendly content in-game, although what I like is that we have a dev-created part of the forum dedicated to RP.
I hope that one day, when (if) they implement option to walk around the stations, there will be space bars where we will be able to sit, talk, get new contracts etc... <sighs, daydreaming>

I am amazed, I thought I was one of the last P&P roleplayers, great to see I'm wrong (not an uncommon occurence!)

If this is an immersive galaxy we can affect by our actions, individually or collectively, Role Play must be the way forward to make things happen.

Not everybody has to participate as a concious decision if all actions have some small effect whether you are following some local/galactic, personal, or group/solo aim.

All that wqould be needed was an addition to the Galnet news, something local, not necessarily the the station or system (though that would be nice and useful when something special happened) but at least to the galactic sector/ factions and local factions groupings. Missions with more of a 'Local' feeling' to work for (or against).

In a previous thread I suggested that one of the authorised E:D authors be asked to take over the generation of such news/story generation. Not to force us down a line but open development avenues for us to explore and develop.

Maybe even use what develops as a basis for a new book (would it not be good to read about Your Commander).

I already roleplay, but I guess the thread asked about the social aspects of roleplay, i.e. interacting with others in your chosen roles? In that case, I have not yet roleplayed. I don't even know how to communicate with other pilots (I could find out, but I'm waiting for the printed manual) and find it cumbersome anyway (the keyboard is behind my joystick).

Thanks for the lot of answers =) I'm a bit surprised by how many people want to and like roleplay.

I played on a Freelancer modded server back in 2010 called Discovery, which had amazing RP. Mosf of the RP was actually in-game, with easily more than 200 people per system. If we manage to build something like this here, it would be brilliant.

But, as lots of people pointed out, we do need some help from the devs in regards to allegiances and factions and all that.

That's called masochism, mate =P Kudos for the dedication!

Until you can honestly say.. yeah I'm a space trucker and then blast off for the shoulder of orion in your own REAL spaceship... every time you click that button you're roleplaying.

I actually met Buzz Aldrin... only person I can honestly say wasn't roleplaying.

Just sayin'

RP's something I enjoy, be it in gaming or pen&paper style.

Pretty much.

I must add that in a game like Elite there is a blurred line that some might not understand when it comes to RP.

For one I always roleplay a character or more, that may or not be linked with other player's characters. Actually it might even conflict with their gameplay or options or expectations.

One of the cool things about a sandbox is that you don't really need to roleplay, because you're not just following rules nor a strict path, you just do what you feel like doing and the game reacts to it, so by just playing, you're already roleplaying.

Obviously the game isn't fleshed out enough for some interesting sandbox-powered roleplaying, but it's only going to get better.

I like RP, used to do it a lot, and even a bit of LARP.
I get quite immersed in Elite, and definitely feel I'm playing a role but haven't had much interaction with other players except my mate on the outside who also bought the game.
However I have berated him by text for doing a spot of slave trading, and we both don't like to quit the game unless our ships are safely tucked up in a station, though I haven't done any extreme exploring yet.

So I realise I'm not strictly role-playing but I feel my commander doesn't do too much out of character, of course that's probably just a natural extension of my personality/play style.

I've found Elite to be the first game in a very long time I can get truly involved in.

What a waffle, sorry.
