Do you recommend Elite to your friends?

It currently costs too much for the limited amount of game that's available. I've also well and truly learned my lesson about recommending products based on promises from the developers.

Instead, I advise friends to evaluate the game on its merits RIGHT NOW, and review that evaluation as new features become available.

I posted about it in beta and mentioned it on release. But here in the USA none of my American friends are familiar with it. A couple said they were interested but it was either too expensive at the time or they looked into it but heard mouse wasn't much good.

Any mention of flying games and they just gush Star Citizen whenever the subject comes up.

I stopped recommending it for the time being because coms doesn't really work in any useful way. One of my old 84 school friends was an early backer and named an NPC but has a mac and is waiting for the mac version.

I'd love them to play with me, but in all honesty I don't think the game in its current form warrants a $60 purchase cost.

Not really. I tell them exploration is fun, but warn them it's a huge time sink that takes a lot of dedication to get going in. Plus it's not finished yet.

Yes, I have told all my friends about Elite!

Yes they finally took the plunge!

and Yes, tonight, when we undocked from our favorite black market outpost, Our original plan was to hop from USS to USS, or take a quick jog around the local RESes... but to our surprise there was a civil war brewing between two insignificant factions, and so we picked a side. (the side with the cooler name) and took the plunge.

Hours of Pew Pew fun were had. Calling targets and ganging up on the enemy anacondas, pythons, vipers, cobras, you name it, they had it! What a glorious firework display! and we only lost two ships!

After it was over, some of us plinked around in USSes or did a bit of trading while squawking on the comms.

Three cheers for this space game!

Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!

I've discussed it with 2 friends, one who has happy memories of Frontier - I recommended E : D to him; the other knew of the original Elite but had never played it, I suggested he do his own research to see if he'd be interested.

I believe the Frontier fan is now playing.

No. After the Wings update I will reconsider, but at this moment? If they do not find it by themselves, then they do not have enough interest on space sims to play it, which is fine as tastes differ.

I have recommended it to a few of my friends and some bought it already, based on my reommendation, and they love it.
I heavily enjoy Elite Dangerous, but I know that with games like this, its a matter of taste and patience. So I am not recommending it to everyone of my friends. I know which ones would love this kind of game.

I had a chat about this game with four buddies from the good old Amiga days. All of them had played Elite and were interested in Elite Dangerous. One of them was already waiting for the OSX version.

After explaining to them how the whole always online requirement is detrimental to the classic way of playing and how you have no save games to protect your time investment, even in solo mode, they quickly lost all interest in getting the game. We've got lives that take up most of our time and gaming is supposed to be fun, not a grind where hours of progress can be wasted by one dumb mistake.

Explaining the offline mode bait and switch debacle as well as the extremely poor customer service (total lack of response) did not help their enthusiasm either.

So no, I did not and do not recommend this game to friends in its current state.

The game mechanics are good for the most part, as is the visual/sound design, but there are too many dumb design decisions relating directly to the stupid, forced online requirement.

I don't know about recommending Elite, but Oculus Rift owners can be a little evangelical. And there's no better game to show off your VR headset than Elite: Dangerous.

Not yet... because i can't f## play with my friends. Only by winky dinky meet me here and hope we'll see eachother.
It's a whole new genre in the current state. Massivley Singleplayer Online (with the option to see real people)
Dont get me wrong... I still enjoy the game. But there are too many things that have to be done, added, fixed, reworked, in order to be recommended and called massively multiplayer

I recommend it but with a lot of small print.

(its not for everyone, its largely unfinished, its not action action action and state that I play in VR so that possibly means my experience is not always representative of if i was playing on a single screen etc)

(when it comes to flying experiences, VR is like bacon imo............... everything is better with VR ;) )

Which kinda explains the disproportionate amount of effort put into making them swoon. I hear the same people handling Elite's PR have been engaged by the Conservatives...

I recommended this game at first, until I realized how little the game actually offered. One friend that I recommended the game to got bored of it around the same time that I did.

Since then I tell everyone to stay away from this game for at least half a year, potentially more. This game has potential to appeal to a very large audience, but not as long as it's empty, repetitive, unbalanced and buggy. This is not a finished product and shouldn't be advertised as such.
