ED HELP.... Users Please do not go AFK when setting on the pad on the outposts!!!

I personally find the waiting around as part of the game! Usually when it's a player they are in and out in reasonable time, and I then initiate chat! I have several CMDR's on my friends list now from these encounters. Most of them communicate from time to time: 'Hi! I have that Asp now!' 'How's the trading going?' 'Killed any Anacondas recently?' and last night: ' Hey! Long time no see! How you doing? I have an Anaconda kill mission, fancy joining in?'

Most chats have led to a friending and as I said most of them come back every so often with a bit of chat, just to see how each other are doing, or whatever! Personally I think the chat thing is one of the best parts of the game, shame it is still rather clunky and doesn't always work due to peer to peer connection problems sometimes.

However, it does seem if you have players as friends, once you have appeared together in the same instance, the chat seems to carry on working, wherever each of you then go off to. Well, that's my experience so far, anyway.

Some of you think this is a harmless thing, but for the rare few, not being able to dock can kill you, when you're out of fuel and sitting outside a station burning fumes for 15-20 minutes, then your suit O2 because your engines died because you couldn't dock and refuel.

Happened to me. Personally, I took it as a learning experience (and enjoyed the process and realism), and wasn't aware of the "go solo to dock" trick. Just pointing out that it's not as harmless as you think.

Imagine this, you go into the hanger, someone lands on the docking pad. You are stuck in the hanger until they leave.

Instancing my good fellow. Take them in, take them out of the instance, or them in a new one when they leave if necessary.

I thought this was how it already happened?

Don't ruin docking to 'fix' it. It should use a separate instance when you dock I.e. You vanish temporarily then when you launch it puts you back in your instance (if it can). Easy.

For now, just save and exit, solo, dock, save and exit, open. Don't know why you are waiting 15 minutes.

I do most of my trading between outposts, docking/leaving is safer and usually quicker. My best route so far has now been discovered by other Commanders (or perhaps I discovered their route) - hopefully it's not on the net else it will get swamped. Ended up seeing the same three ships over and over and chatting with some. All the traders were well behaved and quick in & out but there was an instance of some unknown Commander afk at the pad for 30 mins or so, leading to a commander queue forming - we had to go elsewhere in the end.

I often log-off when docked in an outpost - I was not aware (or expecting) that my ship would block the pad while I'm logged off. Surely this isn't the case?

... but when a player blocks a pad, just to be a , as he/she know there are 3 others waiting, this is a problem which has not be addressed...

What makes you think they have any motive for being there other than Game play? Read the News, check on outfitting, scan the available missions. There is a reason you want a Pad, they have the same reasons to be there as you.

Are you convinced that starting a brand new thread for your individual trouble will make FD suddenly decide this is on the top of their list? You knew there were other threads on the subject, add to the discussion. You know you can just pop into Solo mode to finish that mission, but you cross you arms and pout instead. I don;t get it, why willingly join a cutthroat galaxy and then expect creature comforts? Silliness.

This subject has been discussed over and over again. It's a cutthroat world out there, no one is going to just give you a seat. Small Stations have limited spaces, it makes sense. Move along.

People are waiting in RL on traffic lights in lines, in stores, in many places. I guess they are not thrilled to play " Elite Waiting In Line (tm)"

Exactly :) It takes me a good hour to get home each night, and invariably I'm stuck in traffic. I don't want that same experience in-game. It's not cut-throat, it's tedious (and unnecessary).

There's an exit mailslot at the side of the outposts. Did you see this yet? It's currently defunct.

not quite, their glorious bandaid to "logging in when docked into a station with all landing pads already occupied" was making you log into Solo Play until your first SC / Hyperjump.

I sometimes sit on a pad for a long time (about two hours is my longest). However, I'm not afk as such, I'm doing something, but I need to be on that pad.

I really don't think it's the best solution that smaller outposts can be blocked in open play permanently by two people.

And I also don't think switching to Solo play to get around Open Play inconveniences is that great a solution either. That's not "figuring it out". I don't see why putting ships into the hangar doesn't free up the docking spot.

Because if u were in the hanger and a player was on the pad, how on earth would you get out again?

I had this issue near Evarate, Pitroti? Always 8 CMDR's waiting to dock, no docking queue system in place so just left and made several jumps and found a trade route giving me 700cr per ton more :)

The other problem, is that you can't join a queue for the next free bay so you end up spamming docking requests. So, if FD want to keep the realistic 'Wait for a space', they could consider the option to join a queue (it would also tell you how many others were waiting, so you could make an informed decision as to whether to move along).

I agree with this one as it would help a lot and surly spamming docking requests can't be a good thing.

I bash their ship off the pad, then request docking, seems to work ok

I'd just move into the hangar so you see an empty pad. Then you can sit there scratching your butt and wondering why you can't land even though you see an empty pad. People acting like you are what drives people to fly Solo. And then I would imagine you'd be right back here complaining that you can't find any real people in the game.

You'd think that the station owners would have something to say about their pads being blocked - stops their source of income.

Surely they should be policing the pads?

...and where can I get my copy of 'Pad Hoggers Weekly'? :)

EDIT: What about clamping?

Going to stick my head above the parapet here.

Assume I land at an outpost having completed the last run of the night, and I want to be able to pick up a mission immediately when I play again next time. I land, enter hangar, log off. Am I now blocking a pad? Surely if I log off in the void, then I vanish - see numerous threads about pulling the plug/exploits. Does this not happen to those who log off when hangared?

Note: I will change my log off behaviour from now if I am blocking, but I knew no better (to be honest I thought the pads could have a number of ships hangared in stacks below them! Imagination, wonderful thing)

When the ship's in the hamgar, the pilot's wandering around the station, picking up some duty frees, checking out the new paintjobs, catching up with that nice greenskinned slave girl etc., etc. :)

I went to Costa in Hartley Whitney yesterday,

Seriously? I mean there is another port right across the main spacelanes, the Waggon does reasonable coffee, but I hear their food cartridges are a little mundane.

Did you try Blackbushe Landing? I know it is on the very far end of the system, that the port only opens one day of the week, and everyone agrees the commodities market is not what it once was, but the food cartridges are more varied and they have plenty of landing pads, (Independent coffee though, not sure how you feel about that).

If you have faction with Costa and don't mind a jump with a bit of supercruise time, they opened up a new concession at the Farnborough Gate Coriolis, might get equivalent prices there. Just watch out for the system security vessels, turns out the Farnborough Gate port is often in lockdown due to smuggling activity.

YMMV.
