Why do things stop in elite?

sn't this supposed to be a space sim? I don't get when you bump on a cargo and it goes a certain way until it stops and there isn't any aparent reason for it besides not letting it run away from you for eternity. Just the idea of having an object floating in space along with the ship that carried it bothers me, but I can get over that. However, after you bump them and they stop, It ally annoys me. if you bump some black box you needed to get, and it shoots out into space, you should be "well, I ed it up, not my fault, after all this is a space sim, right?"

It's a sim, but it's also a game. So, because of gameplay reasons.

If you like you could always imagine that the canisters has small thrusters to slow them down in case they are floating away to make picking them up easier. (Let's disregard which point of reference they are moving against here for simplicity's sake. ;))
 
Aw, come on, you can already destroy the cannisters by ramming into them, why not take the extra step into authenticity and make them drift away? It's not like there is really important cannisters that can only be found once in a lifetime, even if so, it would be the players fault for not being careful. But since they won't chance it anyway, i'll just imagine they have tiny thrusters.
 
Call me crazy but I do think they have thrusters to normalize their position. I could swear I hear little thrusters hissing as I close in to pick them up.
 
Also, you and the canister of what ever are moving regardless of appearances. Yall are orbiting something. Even if you can't tell by the naked eye. Things just don't float in one spot, moon orbit planet, planet orbit star, star orbit center of galaxy. If Yall were truly standing still, yall might get smacked by a planet traveling 66,600 mph, and that doesn't factor in our solar system traveling an average of 515,000 mph.

Don't forget that everything has a gravitational pull, regardless of its size, although the lower the mass the weaker the pull. However, if you accept that the canisters do have thrusters, then this could explain why their integrity degrades over time until eventually the canisters disappear. They have run out of fuel, the thermal signature drops, and you cannot see them any longer.
 
As like with any movie or game, there are limitations towards realism to maintain a certain 'entertainment value'.
Elite Dangerous is not encyclopedia on space, it's first and foremost a game. I value realism, but some sacrifices in the name of 'gameplay' are required.

No but really, they stop because of a gameplay feature/desicion. I agree they should keep going, but i can imagine the people that doesnt want to practice (they are many around here) they wouldnt be able to pick up a single piece of ore and the forum would be full of posts about it.
 
I love it when people say that this game is a simulation. Because what is simulated here from the real world? I dont know anything that works in real life like here in Elite Dangerous. Is it because your in a cockpit? Or that the Galaxy is kind of like our own?

Today, Braben has returned to the game of his youth for a sequel, Elite: Dangerous. This time, he used astronomy rather than the Fibonacci sequence to arrange his galaxy. “I wanted to make the galaxy as accurate as possible so that the results of that exploration would make sense to people,” Braben said. “In the game, every single star in the real night sky is present, some hundred and fifty thousand of them, and you can visit each one. Even the clouds of stars that make up the Milky Way are included: some four hundred billion stars, their planetary systems, and moons are present, all waiting to be explored.”

The positions of the stars were drawn from the numerous publically available sky surveys, which Braben and his team at Frontier, the Cambridge-based game developer, collated and merged. They used procedural models based on physics to fill in gaps where data was missing or incomplete. “As you move farther from Earth, the data becomes increasingly sketchy, but the galaxy still runs by the same rules,” Braben said. “The hundred and fifty thousand star systems are taken from real-world data. But once you move beyond a few hundred light years we can only see the very brightest stars individually, so we use procedural techniques to augment the data.”

Floor van Leeuwen helps run the Gaia satellite project, which aims to chart a three-dimensional map of the Milky Way, at the Cambridge Institute of Astronomy. According to van Leeuwen, models of space such as those seen in Elite: Dangerous are crucial to expanding our understanding of the universe. “Computer simulations have played a very important role in astronomy for many decades,” he said. “The kind of problems encountered in astrophysics are almost always well outside what can be represented through simple clean equations.”

Elite Dangerous is a space simulator game, however the key word is 'game' 100% full simulation would be extremely difficult to run, but the way Elite dangerous runs now is still a kind of simulator, last I checked (though I haven't actually checked and kinda tricky with sc as it is) but planets and such do travel in their orbits and planets and such have their own spin.

Soo yeah...
 
It's a forum bug when pasting text. For some reason, the forum admins are refusing to fix it. No idea why.
Just FYI depending on the theme chosen, he could be using white background with black text, however if you set the color yourself, then it will override the theme coloring and remain black here, could also have happened, because I haven't seen it happening in any other thread?

I believe that the Klingons have made a deal with the Sith to influence Dumbledore to cast a spell so that the Enterprise shoots the Death Star and the reflecting nuclear warhead explosions cause the Tardis to travel down the Kessel Run which creates subspace eddies that slow the cannisters down so you can pick them up.
