Why can't I add shields to my Cobra? It tells me it's too heavy?

I was wondering why I can't add shields to my Cobra? It tells me it's too heavy? Surely the fact I have very heavy armour fitted to my Cobra to give me added protection against beam weapons should make no difference to the fact I need shields?

As it is when I go into combat and I take a hit it immediately starts reducing my armour and if I am fighting 3 or 4 pirates who are wanted then they have the upper hand on me because I have no shields to start with.

That's not right. You can definitely add shields to all ships. It sounds like you may be trying to equip shields that are too large for the Cobra and are designed for larger ships?

You are probably trying to by a shield class that is too small or large. Cobra wants class 3 shields, I bet you are trying to buy something different.

The shield has to be suitable for the hull mass. scroll through the list and you should see some that are not red. Or you have been very unlucky and managed to pick a station that has no shields to suit your hull mass.

Yeah, if you're getting the "too heavy for hull" warning you're looking at the wrong shields. Shop elsewhere.

The shield isn't too heavy, the ship is too heavy.
The largest internal slot the Cobra has is class 4 and these are optimal shields for the cobra. Class three will work but not as well.
If you are trying to buy a class 2 shield it is too small for the size of the cobra and won't let you fit it.

Because of my high level of armour I can't even add in ANY shields!

Nope I can't even fit yellow available ones to fit. Every class of shield I have tried says Hull Too Heavy! I have shopped stations along a route that was 210LY journey.

Nothing to do with the armour. The ship's "Hull Mass" is the limiting factor for shields and that is static and doesn't change based on your load out. Adding armour would increase the ship's total mass, not hull mass so it doesn't matter.

Did you re arrange slot layout and now find yourself trying to equip shields in a class 2 slot, if so, there is your problem, no class 2 shield is going to work.

Let me look into this Hexcaliber mate, I may have to give up something I really like for some shields. At present tho I tend to not wander too far away from a repair facility and when my asset Integrity is down to 70% I go and pay for repairs and use the money I get from killing the wanted I come across for the bounty.

Hull too heavy means the shield is too small. But are you looking at the right internal compartment? If shields are in a size 3 compartment and you are trying to buy them for a size 4 then yes none will be allowed to install. Only one shield per ship. Sure nothing is in the class 3 compartment?

Thanks Mike I will look into this once the game has loaded onto my Laptop PC. I can't play on my desktop any more without my system cratering badly. I am waiting for the next patch to see if this fixes things for me.

It's also possible that you are shopping at a station that does only have a very small stock of equipment and does only sell class 2 shields. In that case even the best the station might offer you would be too weak for a Cobra.

Shield Optimised Masses:

Size Minimum Optimised Maximum
1 13t 25t 63t
2 28t 55t 138t
3 83t 165t 413t
4 143t 285t 713t
5 203t 405t 1013t
6 270t 540t 1350t
7 530t 1060t 2650t
8 900t 1800t 4500t

Shield Optimised Masses:

Size Minimum Optimised Maximum

6 270t 540t 1350t

Which is the max shield the Dropship can install. But it has a Hull Mass of 580t, which is higher. Bringing it's effective shield value down to 75% and Asp level.

Is the Python really supposed to have 2.6x the shield rating of the Dropship? And have more shielding with a 100k Credits Class 3B shield than the Dropship with a 15MCr 6A shield?
