Please Use the Correct Entry/Exit!

yesterday a NPC Eagle evaded my T9 in the docking slot by flying above me. no touching, no scrap.
First time i encountered this, usually they try to shove me out of their way ;)

The proper reaction would have been to use your lateral thrusters just slightly ;-)
But thank you for not doing it, it could have been my viper.

It isn't a bug. If you pay attention as you exit through the mail slot, you'll see that the green side on the inside is red on the outside, and vise versa. Which is why the convention "keep green" exists in the first place. If every single small ship Commander hugged the green side, and gave the right of way to larger ships, then there would be fewer collisions.

well, this doesn't make sense at all that the color be reversed, navigation 101 etc... so this is a bug

I always keep to Green.

The middle lane, as we all know from UK Motorways, is strictly reserved for selfish morons, who have no idea that anyone else in the world has any significance, or relevance, whatsoever.

;)

are you sure about that? if people always go through on the green side, and its green both on the outside and the inside ...

That's what I thought, even though I pay little attention to it.

I had thought it was the Station's Port and Starboard indicators. they will be the same in and out of the slot. It is not a traffic light system.

It's not a bug when it's intentional.

Is what intentional? Entering/exiting on either side?

I prefer to imagine that FD didn't realise that an actual mechanic needed to be implemented, to force players to use common sense!

How naive of me! Simply because the designers didn't anticipate such wanton disregard from players, it is a design feature, making it ok to do whatever you like, regardless of the effect on other players?

I love the world. Can't wait for the Asteroid to get here!

;)

IALA A covers Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. IALA B covers North and South America. This is the international maritime bouyage system and isn't about left/right but in/out (sort of).

Not really. Ships' navigation lights are the same all over the world (green = starboard, red = port), as are the rules of the road (ships keep to starboard when passing each other).
All of which tends to be pretty irrelevant in space, where there is no accepted 'up'.

Green on the inside, is Red on the outside and vice versa, isn't it?

If not, then I look stupid! LOL

My clipper only just fits in the docking slot width ways. I suggest you brake and watch the scanner closer.
.
David Braden commented on people using these lights as a kind of entry/exit system in one of his early rev videos. It was never designed to be used this way but it is handy for the smaller ships.

This only counts for Europeans and maybe some other areas. In the US naval lights are reversed, in other words, red = right and green = left. Might make for some fun collisions...

Correct.

North and South America + Japan, Korea and the Philipines use the port=green system (IALA B system)
The rest of the world uses the port=red system (IALA A system)

there are only two rules of docking entry

#1 give way to type 9's only

#2 4 pips shield fly through with anything else

I second Rennard. I've also been in Clipper for a while (when I am not exploring with an Asp) and I definitely NEED to keep in the middle. You won't squeeze past me in T7. You have to pay attention.

I play in open and have run shield-less when out in the sticks with very few cmdr's around. However wouldn't even think about it in the busy systems selling rares. I'm always extra cautious docking when I see other cmdr's on the radar.

Do try and stick to the green side, but NPC's never do so only helps with other cmdr's. If in a Type-9 or Clipper they will be in the middle anyhow.

this isn't true actually its a perspective of scale thing, stop in the docking entrance and use side thrusters you'll be amazed how close you can get to wall. Its also flat enough you can get 2 ontop of each other or stagger them slightly, type 9s the only ship awkwardly big enough to require mid and even that can probably get in 2 at a time.

I think you can fit a C3 shield on the T7, saves you a lot of headaches and you don't lose that much of cargo space.

Just to mention 3 things on that.

1st Don't fly what you can't afford to loose. Its pretty old but still true.
2nd Don't fly without shields --> yesterday I was caught in the letterbox by a Type 9 . It sounded pretty awful. --> Thanks to C class shields no damage :D.
3rd Enter and Exit on the green side. Its mentioned in the official pilots guide. (sorry, have no link at hand)

Regards,
Miklos

Err. Red on the port side, green on the starboard side. That's all.

Okay - to prove my point watch the NPCs. They always rotate so that they are oriented with red off the port bow, and they always fly through the centre. If you find a ship is upside down to you, do a double-look. You'll see red on your starboard (right) side: It's you that's really upside down.

That's what they're for - locating the orientation of the station. If you stick to that orientation, you will find the same docking ports in exactly the same location every time.

Sorry. No right way to go in-out... except carefully, especially without shields. ;)
