Fuel scoop no use on a cobra?

I also found that better armor, i.e. Military composite, handles heat so much better than standard armor. It lets you get closer to the star with slower heat build up. Which leads to quicker fill up.

At at least it seems that way to me...

A3 on my asp because i dont have any other slot free. My tank is downgraded to 16t and i refill at 167 max, so only takes a few seconds...

On long trading hauls (like rares where you're making 150+ ly "legs"), it could save you the time it takes to supercruise to a station and refuel partway through the journey. Docking for fuel is the slowest part of a long haul; jumping from star to star is actually fairly quick.

I have no doubt about that. When travelling long distances I drop the cargo compartment and install a fuel scoop. But what I find fun is system manipulation via the mission screen, and that has me making short jumps with frequent visits to a wide variety of stations. As such, keeping the fuel scoop isn't the economical choice. As I said, even at a paltry 400 credits/ton profit, I still make more money buying fuel over scooping it.

Mine scoops at 750/sec. A refill takes a few seconds.

If you have to visit spaceports for other reasons, then I would tend to agree that the extra profit from more cargo space means you are better off buying fuel. But if you trade in rares, as I do when not exploring, then you often have multi-jump trips to make where the last thing you want to do is spend time in supercruise, so for those I jump scoop, jump, scoop, until I get to where I want to be.

Which you don't have to do since it refills itself from the main tank. There's no need to buy fuel, ever, basically, once you get a decent fuel scoop.

I appreciate that, but for the few Credits it costs I normally do it when docked, just after paying for the repairs suffered due to my sunburn :p

Don't wait for your tank to be empty, I scoop what is took to jump to each star, short bursts of scooping, rather than the laborious refill. I agree with the other that say you should get as good a class 2 scoop as you can afford, it pays for itself very quickly.

3A is the smallest scoop size I bother with. But then... I don't bother with a scoop on a Cobra anymore unless I'm planning to go really long distances. The cost of fuel after running a Clipper or Python... Cobras are cheap at the pump.

It took some time trading and exploring, but I got an A2 fuel scoop as soon as I could and it's a big improvement. 75 units/second.

The profit you lose from 4 tons of cargo not sold is way greater than the fuel cost of the trip! Fuel scoops are not for Trader cobras.

Just looking at the calculations on Elite Shipyard
.
2D scoop 43 kg/s (6m12s to fill)
2A Max: 75 kg/s (3m33s to fill)
.
I presume these are to fill from empty, I always fit a 2A if I use one on a ship.
Don't wait for your tanks to get too low, if you jump into a system and it has a scoopable star then scoop.
I have rarely had to take longer than 60 seconds ish to refuel not flying a cobra though so...

Finally managed to buy a cobra after a lot of saving. It's a thirsty beast. Fitted a fuel scoop to try and save some money.

Scooping at my local sun. Managed to get the rate up to 20 and then just sat there. And sat there.. The fuel gauge hardly moved.

In fact it's so slow I estimated that I could dock, and do another cargo run and make a shed load more money than the fuel would cost in less time than it would take to scoop.

So, am I using it wrong? Or is a full scoop on a larger ship a waste of space?

For me, it's not for saving money on the fuel, but to get myself out of running dry on very long, unknown runs. It's essential.

@OP - you need t invest in a decent scoop.

I can safely scoop at 200/s in my Cobra. From zero to full takes about 1 min max. If i'm willing to cook a little, i can get 250+/s.

FuelScooping is only good for exploration, otherwise replace the scoop with more cargo space. Scooping you dont only lose time but cargo space too and ofcourse the money used to buy the scoop. Im up to a Type7 right now and the price of gas is way too insignificant, at worst i "lose" a few tons of cargo to pay the bill, best to just have more cargo space, the cash from the scoop price and the time to do your thing.

So how do I keep the temperature down to get the scoop rates high enough? At 20 kg/s I was at 108% temperate with smoke coming off the dashboard (This was with a C2 scoop).

Just dont go below of class 3 fuel scoop... Really. Its one of most important thing to have on ship if you not willing to pay for fuel. Personaly i would not bother with lower than that since it would take too long to refil dat 16t tank on cobra.
