Please fix the Alt F4 exploit

Let's see.

- A decent dedicated server with a 1Gbps connection for about £50 a month. This can be the "games server". Buy 2 or 3 for redundancy.
- A couple of hundred lines of code to provide 'telemetry' (as the devs like to call it) in combat

- Let the telemetry ping the games server every 5 seconds with data, call it a arbitrary 500 byte message
- Even with all 300K players online, in combat, the server could deal with that trivially.

You then have a method (and valuable data) to evolve the game mechanics.

It's hardly "hundreds and thousands of dollars", is it. The main cost would be the programmer time and it wouldn't be a huge amount of man hours.

So, as the holy hand grenade of Antioch goes, you're "right off".

You really have no idea how online games work do you?

Perfect, now we just need the people who find the game pointles to head the other way and then we can finally start enjoying the game we wanted :) They seem to be rather think though and can't grasp that they have nothing to catch here. I guess that's the reason ED would be better without them, who needs lots thick and aggressive people flying around?

Actually I've just noticed your sig.
'A DC a day keeps the griefer away.'

I can see you have the best interests of the game at heart. Good on you.

I posted a rough outline of something and get 3 responses akin to "you don't know" that don't say anything else. Coincidentally I'm also a programmer, a real one! Spare the points scoring and ego-boy stuff for someone else :)

Logoffski is simply bad sportsmanship. It indicates they are the kind of player I don't want in my game. Were I to encounter one it would be simply a matter of adding them to my ignore list and moving on.

There are WAY higher priorities for FD to work on than this and I'm not going to bother getting worked up about it. There's plenty of other players out there that wont pull a logoffski for me to share my game experience with.

Well, thank heavens for that! :D

So am I, and i think a lot of others here are. Lots of game players are programmers.

And sorry, but i have to concur, programmer or no, i think you badly underestimate running costs for things like this. And its not just server costs, there are operations and support costs, personnel, etc.

I haven't read back, but i presume its been suggested that they move to a centralized server... which would most definitely lead to subscription payments, and that would break the agreement we made when we purchased the game. This could open a major battle between players and FD beyond what offlinegate saw. Possibly leading to a large number of refund requests and possibly legal action.

Anyway, i have my own solution. Change F4 to F5. Problem solved! :D

Its starting to affect the whole open play community. Its been increasingly popular everytime I've played. Around 30-40% of all the traders do it (why are you in open if you're just gonna kill connection?), and around 20% of PvPers.

That's a real shame... oh well, RIP Open play *shrugs*

This game is dead in the water, wings are a waste of time, this game isn't gonna last years lol. They should kick planet landings out the door and then work on the sequel. Dumping effort into this one is waste of time. There is now zero point in playing the main game mode. It's about to become a cheat arms race.

That's fair enough. I was more disagreeing with it costing "hundreds of thousands". Nowhere near it. They simply need a mechanism to decide whether it was bad sportsmanship (from the data and suggestions) and then implement an automated means of arbitration from a netural standpoint (the central server). I don't see how it'd involve any human involvement after it's implemented. The developers have already spoken about building a fairly comprehensive API (which'll potentially have in-game ship statuses and whatnot)... so a client/server architecture is always a possibility. I'm really countering the argument that "it's P2P, can't be done".

I'd stick a wager on that ED would become something more subscription orientated after a couple of years, which you can hold me to :) Just because they implement something like that, it doesn't mean the subscriptions have to apply to everyone.

If they don't fix this they will have refund request and legal action. This game is already picking up the reputation that it's a ripoff because it's incomplete and now YouTube is filled with videos of cowards.

I'm a bounty hunter, that's what I do and what earns me money in game. And yes, I prefer to hunt human prey that thinks, fights back hard and tries to outsmart me. Just a few minutes ago I chased a wanted CMDR across several systems following FSD wakes and interdicting him. He gave me a good chase until I finally pinned him down and of course he DCs with 10% hull left. Leaving me with fuel and repair costs and thousands of credits worth of ammo wasted.
You killed his fun - he killed yours. Sounds fair to me.

Certainly a behavior to emulate. People play games for fun. If you only have fun by spoiling others' fun - nuts to you.

Griefer quest for refunds cause you can close a process by Alt-F4. Now this would be hillarious :) I know the people asking for PvP changes appear to be thick but this would rise the bar of thickness for them.

hahaha well put good sir, quite funny as well.

I only said 100,000's of dollars thinking about # of servers to purchase/lease (300,000 people could require several depending on the model they used), but especially the I.T. people now needed to support these machines. It could well be a lower number I guessed at the highest end of the scale I will admit, going with the Cadillac of servers to make sure player experiences are always super tip top...

Sorry, you're not being clear here. What do you mean subscriptions don't have to apply to everyone? Erm... who then? I don't agree to pay for subscriptions. I paid for the game, ill pay for expansions, and i buy paint packs, and if they offer other little cosmetic goodies i might buy those as well (i will never pay to win though!).

You'd said
>that would break the agreement we made when we purchased the game

I assume when you say 'we', you mean people who backed the game on kickstarter, or even people who bought the game to date. There's nothing stopping them changing it to a subscription model for new players.... is what I meant.

FDev has had over a year to fix issues like this. They obviously are not going to, so just deal with it and enjoy the game.

I think it's safe to say most people don't care about some upset pirates/griefers/gankers. They'd much prefer FD focus their efforts on adding content to the game.

I do side with the legitimate bounty hunters on this issue. If you're wanted, see it through and get blown apart. I'm more concerned with the pointless murdering of clean players for kicks.
