Avid Sci/Fi and Fantasy reader since I left Biggles books behind.

No qualifications after 'A' levels, but am naturally intelligent (was a member of Mensa for years until I moved to Holland). Have worked in IT for 25+ years, which luckily doesn't require you think all that much :eek::D.

I am just curious about how stuff works. Ecology, physics, people, stories, painting, crystal structures - I like finding out about stuff, but am not what you would call 'technical'.

I honestly feel like a dunce sometimes on this forum, there are clearly some very smart science type folks. I like sci-fi always have done but I have no specific knowledge at all.

I think that was a large part of what this poll was created to examine.

At the moment, we're looking at about 55% of those who voted with no sciencee or enginering degrees, some of whom don't even have much interest in those sorts of conversations.

So my point is that a lot of these highly-technical conversations that often possess threads...are just shedding eyeballs because most people here can't or don't want to follow the conversations after a time because they get way too technical for the rest of us to follow.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.

Well it's not a bad thing that intelligent people are having a good time hashing stuff out even if it's not engaging us unwashed masses. :) What I do think, however, is that some of our friends are over analyzing the physics in this game. (I'm looking at you, space contrail thread!) That shouldn't surprise anyone, though.... it's what us geeks do! :p When FD release more info (pics, newsletters, videos) people will turn to other topics. Whenever there is a dearth of information to supply demand folks will find things to talk about.

To be fair I find some of the technical banter quite interesting.

The only difficulty is when you have two differing opinions on the the same subject.

Perhaps the 'heads need to get together to elect a boss 'head who has the final say and declares the valid statement!

Well qualified bunch

Interesting to note that with 88 quotes counted (at point of this reply) nearly 45% of respondents have at least a first degree in science or engineering (I was Applied Mathematics). I'm sure this must be the cause of a lot of the detail discussed on the forum, and think the game will be better for it.

However I entirely agree that a game won't be - and doesn't need to be - 100% scientifically accurate.

If you ever feel you want to know what its like at the other extreme, come for a drink at the Thargoid and Fer-de-Lance bar, but please leave your brain at home if you don't want it pickled!

O Level science is a far as I got back in the day but love sci-fi and subscribe to New Scientist to keep up to date on the latest news and to understand developments more deeply.

There are only 5 that went for the highest tier of the poll options. Give each a Bat'leth and throw them into an arena.

Someone mentioned about the various debates that go on around here and some of them do get quite heated at times, but I think this is mainly around the theoretical physics area and not established proven physics. Typical subjects include black holes, time travel, artificial gravity, bending space, the big bang etc.... These are area's that are still not fully understood and it is great to be able to debate possible solutions.

I am still a bit disillusioned as to why FD haven't taken up my Artificial Gravity Vest idea that I proposed many months ago now :-(
