So my save data's gone.

An accident happened, the guy's asking if there's any help to be had - seems a reasonable request, but one only FD can answer. No one else touches my gaming PC, but I can see how those more generous and trusting than myself might get burnt :)

Personally I really hope this is something Support can help with as I know how gutted I'd be if it happened to me.

Scoob.

Probably a reasonable idea to have it password protected.

As a father, I would really, really appreciate this. It's already happened to me once, very early in Gamma when it still didn't matter. I'd be in shock if it happened now.

No backups I assume? Sigh! - Another one!

CMDR dementia, please do tell us your magic secret to back up your save? Yeah....thought not. Clown.

Anyhow, another piece of input from my days as a GM (if it matters)....all games of this nature have gamelogs, and the guys who deal with tickets like this get pretty damn good at reading them. So if it was a case of "my puppy jumped on the table scaring my goldfish, who jumped out of it's bowl, tempting the cat, who jumped on my newborn, who puked on the exact keys required to delete my save" RIGHT after an expensive loss (i.e. in ED this would be losing your ship without insurance) then yeah, it'll be spotted and the answer will be PFO.

But for every one of those stupid tickets, there is another one who deserves a bit of compassion and help. I am hoping that this one will get resolved in the appropriate way. I'd love to see the response to the ticket, because no matter what the folks who see in monochrome is, there is DEFINITELY a responsibility on the part of FD to protect that save and the account a little bit better.

What a sense of entitlement: Why should FD do anything to help you be more responsible?
Solved.

No, no that's not really solved, now is it?

You can delete your save just by clicking one menu option and then clicking OK. My 4 year old daughter can click OK like a boss even though she can't read properly yet. She just knows the irritating pop-up box goes away.

If she had to type in a password or even just the word "delete" then it'd be impossible for her. But could she delete my save the way the game is at the moment? Hell yes she could.

This is just newbie programming, the way that option is set up at the moment. Seriously. It's not like no other MMO (and this IS an MMO, make no mistake about it, even if it's not all that social sometimes) has ever run into this issue before, and taken steps. Look at wow or swtor before they changed it - delete was a single click, followed by an OK. It was found lacking, and they changed it. FD need to do the same.

I've read some of your posts Black, and you usually make sense. This.,...well, again, monochrome viewing.

I don't know why they don't have it so you can rollback anyway. Who would be the loser there?

Only the "haha too bad" crowd loses out with that. Dumb gameplay I don't have much sympathy for, but this is a weakspot in the UI. Played a game like that before where the buttons for "Buy this from your Real Monies Stash" and "Buy this with your in-Game Monies" were almost indistinguishable, and right next to each other. That got major amounts of blowback till it was fixed.

My baby sister was at my place the other day with my Fiancee while I was out on business. I get home today to find my save had been wiped. My fiancee said my sister deleted it by mistake while she was away from the PC.

I had 37 million in net worth and a whole lot of star data on systems I had been. What do I do now? My fiancee offered to play the game and grind away at it until she got me back up to the credits, the woman's addicted to trading in this game, but honestly the money I couldn't care less about. that was just a means to the python. My ranks and status with the federation is what I really cared about. That and my Viper. I had it fully kitted. Now I don't even want to boot up my PC. I really don't want to start this over yet again. What should I do? Can frontier do something to get my data back or is it back to the freegle again?

Well lets see. Support is out of the question because you'll never get an answer. And they probably really don't give a "hoot" anyway. I would personally quit and never come back if I lost it all. Not enough fun or things to do to repeat it. They should honestly put the clear save somewhere that cannot be accessed easily and also give it multiple are you sure questions and without a doubt passworded so you have to put in your password to delete it. But other than quiting it will be a new start for ya.

Sorry for your loss, I think it's the real reason most MMO's out there won't let you "Save" your password in the launcher. To prevent any kind of "Child" or "Dog" or "cat" related accident.

Jeez there are some self righteous, sanctimonious, perfect humans on this forum today.

Sorry for the accident hope you get the save back. If its that easy to wipe the save there needs to be some kind of protection and I don't mean locking down your PC so family cant get onto the internet or indeed hiding your PC behind a mine field and a barbed wire fence. I guess you could add multiple accounts as the perfect humans suggest, but of course they are obviously so PC savvy that they don't even trust their spouses to play with their toys. Imagine leaving your PC on without logging off and re-logging a guest account with limited permissions and access before you pop out, how very normal of you , you must be ashamed.

Hell, even WoW has the possibility of character restore - every 30 days you can restore a character for free.

Not to mention that deleting a character ist somewhat more involved.

You're an MMO player, so what do we have here ?
OP clearly admits to account sharing.
So the people he allows to play on his account won't have to buy the game, that's no gentleman offense.
It is lost revenue to FD, and they'd be well within their rights to ban his account altogether.
And he comes here and expects help from them ?
I'd just have kept my mouth shut and move on.

Boo! This is a gross misinterpretation of what happened to the OP.

I have recruited at least 5 new players by letting them take the controls of my PC while visiting at my house.

The game allows you to save the login credentials, there is no possible way that they could ban for someone clicking play. The suggestion that they would is ridiculous.

Ok I feel I need to explain this a little. When my save game was deleted My fiancee was playing the game at the time on my pc. No account transfering or anything of the sort here. She stepped away from the pc while docked somewhere to deal with something, probably brought up the pause menu or something. don't know, I wasn't there. My sister's 7. She's known for messing with stuff she shouldn't when I'm not around to stop her. She more than likely hit a lot of keys until she deleted the save. Not the file on the pc, the game doesn't save on the pc anyway.

It really boils down to user error. I know that. But all I really wanted to know if Frontier could save me from a mistake. It's a simple mistake. If they can then wonderful. If not that sucks but it's not their fault of their problem. I just don't want to have to restart the game for I think the 4th time. Counting Beta restarts that is.

Based on the OP, I kinda figured that's close to what I read.

From an IT perspective, the issue will come down to, how often do they do their backups. It's quite possible they'll have to go back a few days to a week, maybe more, to get the data back, if they are setup to get individual account data back at all.

It's possible they have more current backups, and again, it depends on if they're setup to do individual account restores. It'll also depend on their policy regarding doing such, their determination, based on the information provided, as to whether they feel you are entitled to a restore.

Personally, I'd concern myself first with whether they have a current enough backup to suit you, and that they have the tools to restore just a single user's save. It also will depend on what form the data is saved, more than likely, it's database records, which aren't really individual files, but data within a database therefore, restore individual records becomes more troublesome.

Good luck with this, I hope they can undo what your sister did, if not, it's a chance to start again, and not make the same mistakes you've made, use what you've learned playing, to do better.

If perfect human = someone with IT experience then there are probably more perfect humans than you think.

So, when you go to a work environment do you just stroll up to any PC, wiggle the mouse a bit to get rid of the screensaver and just start typing away? No? Why isn't that a good idea? You can use both sides of the paper and more pencils are available.

Don't you think the couple of minutes it takes to set up accounts on a PC for multiple users is a good idea? I have a 10 year old daughter and her rights and permissions are radically different to mine on the PC I'm typing this on. Any idea why I'd want to set that up? Oh, right, I'm a perfect human being, I forgot.

Do try to think above your normal, non-perfect mindset sometimes, you might find it refreshing. Hand in your paper over there, I'll ignore it later.

FD has enough to deal with, focusing on REAL issues that impact the game. Submitting "babysitting" tickets pulls away valuable FD support resources unnecessarily. We are adults here.

I can't believe you are blaming FD for this. I'm not going to waste my time defending FD, because It's dumb to do so. Follow my suggestions and I promise you won't have to worry about your 4 year old.

I, like you, and many out here have kids too. We aren't having this problem.

I feel your pain OP, and I hope that your ticket gets a sympathetic response....I really do feel that the option to save password logging in, as well as no confirmation on wiping save is a bit lax, and could do with an update.

Ist.

Personally having to type a password every time I play would wind me up no end, its a case of inconveniencing loads of people because one person out of 300,000 didnt secure their computer properly. People should really think about what a massive risk having a non-password protected computer in house is in this day and age.

I do hope FD can resurrect the guys save though.

Even if the fiancee had been playing with her own Windows account and with her own separate commander, in these circumstances a save would still have been deleted. How many of us lock our machines every time we get up to answer the door? Authenticating before permitting a game wipe seems a sensible step to me. I hope the OP gets his save back.
