Newcomer / Intro I need a Combat Ship setup. And I got money to burn.....

I have money to burn and would like to get into a combat ship, the only thing I know is Cobra Mk III is the desired choice.

I would like to get into combat zones, some assassination missions, and maybe bounty hunting NPCs.

Can anyone suggest a good set up???

like for Bounty hunting NPCs, I know I need a warrant scanner and interdictor, but do I need a wake scanner?

What is better, Fixed or Gimballed? Beams or Pulse lasers? etc?

If you have the skill for fixed then go fixed. If you suck like me you will need gimballed.

Small hardpoints beams, medium hardpoints multicannons. At least thats my choice. Ive heard of others.

Viper all the way. C1 beams, c2 MC. Het a kws, no need for interdictor or wake scanner at this point. Always go for gimballed mc, lasers is up to you. Gimballed is better for targeting modules and shooting in turning battles. Fixed for ranged sniping, when fighting ships witj chaff and higher damage in general. Bring a shield cell bank, get A-rated thruster, powerplant, distributor and shield. Armor is up to you: defense vs agility.

I've never bothered with the interdictor or wake scanner. As for choice of weapons, try them out, there is not one best set-up, there is only a best set-up for you.

part of the fun is finding out what you like to use.

also depends on your skill. fixed are more efficient but more difficult to aim with.
some hardpoints work better with gimbled.

for PvP piracy or murder I guess wake scanner is useful.
for piracy cargo scanner and interdictor
interdictor might be useful for some types of bounty hunting but most of the time not needed.
interdictor and cargo scanner needed for some missions (kill traders)

shield cells are the nuts now but will be nerfed

Money to burn, then can't beat a Python :)

class A everything
3 x C3 beams
2 x F2 multi cannons
2 x C6 shield cells

I see these NPCs that are wanted in SC, don't I need an interdictor to nab them??

I want to help the system authorities and do some cop stuff.

Upgrade the thrusters and power-plant on the Cobra to make it faster and more manoevrable. For weapons, I personally use gimballed multi-cannons on all four hard points, set to all fire at once. Get a Kill Warrant Scanner as well to rack up loads of cash from bounties.

Inefficient. One beam laser would stripe the shields down faster (and cheaper) than all four MCs combined.

Depending upon hull type once the shield is down it's more efficient with 4MC than 2MC & 2 laser.

Plus there are a lot of hostil NPCs who oddly roam with no shields

(I personally prefer lasers / MC mind)

May I suggest an Eagle :)

I have gone down hill from my Asp to my Viper to my Eagle, all are high A rates loadouts with multi/beam/dumbfire missile loadouts but the eagle with one fixed beam and 2x dumbfire is astonishing.
Granted you have to reload regularly but you can get up close and personal with pretty much every ship, keep out of their weapon spreads and rain down fire on which ever sub system you want.
Its a cold blooded killer and only costs 120,000 to rebuy :)

Multycannons are overrated imo and I don't like them. There, I said it! :). Not so powerfull, ammo costs, in a combat against agile pilot, you'll be lucky to hit anything if you're not close enough...
My Cobra setup is: two medium gimballed beams and two small gimballed pulse lasers OR gimballed cannons (for close range), "A" grade internals. Interdictor is a must for bounty hunting in supercruise, if you want to hang out by the nav beacon, you don't need it. Warrent scanner is cheap and can help you make a lot more money while hunting. But that's me. Question is how good of pilot are you and what suites you and your style of combat. Just experiment and you'll find a best setup for yourself in notime.

There are Conflict Zones in some systems. Fly there, choose one of two factions and kill everything that's not green :) 3000cr per kill is not bad and it's fun.
