Joining the Oculus club...

So, I pulled the trigger today and placed my order.. Site says 1-2 weeks for shipment, hopefully that's somewhat accurate and it wont be 1-2 months and just haven't updated the page..

Guess we will see, and Ill report back with my first impressions of it when it arrives! Hopefully it arrives before my Zombicide Kickstarter backing.. or I may be playing that more then my PC ;)

Please post on the VR forum once you have your IPD setup correctly and sit in your first ship :) It's always funny to read the reactions from someone trying it for the first time.

I think I said the F word around a hundred times when I first sat in the Eagle, nobody warned me that everything is real size, I imagined it to be like a 3D monitor with head tracking. Then you try a Hauler and realize how huge it is, then your jaw drops when you sit in Type-6 and get vertigo on landing. Then you realize the T7 bridge is a big as a factory lol.

It never stops, had mine for 3 months and still can't quite wrap my head around how insane it feels.

Probably why I like the Type-9 and Clipper so much, the Clipper makes you feel like you are on the Bridge of Cruise Liner, the T9 feels like you are the commander of a gigantic starship.

Makes me laugh when people say this game is boring, I could sit in low orbit around an Earth like planet for hours, just floating in my T9 looking down at the islands and continents.

You'll be able to run it fine, ED doesn't need very powerful hardware. I can run the game with 130FPS on my GTX760 and a comparable i5, and the Dev Kit 2 needs stable 75FPS.

Running Ed in most areas of the game with my generate unlocked (vSync off) usually nets me around 130-150 frames per second on a single 1080p 36" HDTV on HDMI. I just read a lot about the DK2 being particularly stressful because of downsamplinG.

My GTX760 is fine in open space, but can drop to ~60fps or so in rings or next to (docked at) busy stations, even with some settings dropped (shadows off, AA off etc.). Playing at 1080p (DK2 native res) on my monitor, Ctrl-F reckons I'm dropping to 90fps at minimum with those same settings. There is an extra rendering overhead for the Rift, and while I have no idea if my figures are representative, it's a significant hit (90 to 60 is a 30% hit for the same resolution).

The R9 290x should be fine, I'm sure I've seen people post in the VR forums that they can get good framerates even when oversampling with that card.

Will do! :) It might give me a reason to buy the t9 back.. when i got it, i was expecting this huge, hard to fly beast of a ship.. what I ended up with was a hard to fly ship that felt "meh".. I had no problems putting it through the mail slot at 150km/hr because you just dont get that "depth" to make it feel large... so Im looking forward to that experience.

ED aside, im also not one to get involved with any characters i play in-game.. My friend will play HL2, and a headcrab will jump at him and he freaks out.. my GF watches movies and cries when a guy dies or whatever.. me.. im pretty emotionally unattached from what im watching.. I dont get sad (unless a dog gets hurt :) ) from movies, and games.. if my charachter does, meh.. whatever ill load a save and go back at it..

I am excited to try Alien:I and a few horror games like dreadhalls to see if I can keep myself un-attached from things.. if in the back of my mind I am thinking "its all fake dont worry" or if the OR will get me to actually be scared of whats happening.. Thats what im most looking forward to trying.

Im charging my friends 20 bucks to try it, so I should have it paid in full in a few days hahah ;)

VRDesktop will show you your (main monitor) desktop projected as a curved, floating screen in the rift. You can fire up the Netflix client (or VLC, or whatever your media player of choice is) and watch a movie like that easily enough. There are also various commercial and non-commercial products that offer media playback (maybe even 3d movie playback?) for the rift.

The biggest hits are having to render the image twice, and on top of that, render it twice in 3D. NVIDIA keeps promising a VR driver that will kick ass with the dual rendering, but they've yet to deliver it.

When my CV1 arrives I'll be gifting my DK2 to any interested friends / family, it won't go to waste. (also I expect you could get $100 for a DK2 if the CV1 is still in the $300 range on release)

Not sure about netflix, but for $10 you can have a bunch of full size cinema's to watch your own movies. One of the Cinema's is out in the Ocean with a huge screen floating about 30ft way from you.

I don't think that's 100% accurate.. while it will be "outdated" there will inevitably be a wait period for the CV1 due to supply shortage like every other new product that's widely anticipated.. Im pretty confident I could get at least 1/2 the cost of the DK2 back on Kijiji/Craigs or Ebay.. I already have 2 friends as well who have expressed interested in buying it "at discount" when/IF i get the CV1. These are friends who don't generally buy the newest thing out there, but like to still play around with new stuff, and most of the time take my old hardware.

If none of the above pan out, then I will just chalk it up to using it for 6-8 months have spent that 350 well in the sense that it provided some entertainment during that time and it saw some good use. If it really is the bees knees, then 350 is pretty cheap for hours and hours of entertainment :)

TBH, im more concerned that my GF said "if you buy that thing, we're breaking up.. " We will see if she was joking or not soon enough! :)

"Rendering in 3D" isn't a problem as every 3D game renders everything in 3D, for the Oculus you just need one more perspective. I think the main performance hit lies in the fact that this process isn't accelerated enough by the hardware(the driver you mentioned) and the additional image adjustments for the Rift.
 
Welcome to the oculus club, we have awesome cookies, but sometimes you need to lean forward to see them.

Sorry, gotta give you a negative there. You don't have two halves of the image, you have two full resolution unique images. If you take the lens off you can see the images are nearly complete for each eye.

I managed on my system ok below 75 FPS but some people get VR sick unless they have a full 75.
 
Get your self a copy of voice attack next.. Keeps you from having to pull the Rift off to find keys on the keyboard..

And there is no way to describe the WOW factor when you step into the ship for the first time..

Im finding the Rift it a great way to de stress after a bad day, find a nice planet with a ring. Drop out and set there taking it all in while sipping a nice hot tea..

Yes, but you are rendering 2 separate 960x1080 images instead of one 1920x1080 image, the DK2 is a single 1920x1080 screen (1080p) with half used for each eye.

I "only" see a 30% reduction in fps from rendering a single 1080p monitor to running on the DK2, not the 50% or more that "running it twice" would require. And my 30% may not be indicative, it could be an edge case due to some weird issue only on my machine.

Well the game resources itself wouldn't need to be doubled, no double CPU strain. I was just trying to give an idea of what he should be looking for performance wise. I'm honestly not even sure what mine runs at compared to non-rift being I'd have to turn vsync off to be sure (got a beefy system).
 
I've been fighting the urge for a DK2 for a long time now hoping to wait for the CV1 or whatever is next they keep showing off. You guys make it really hard to keep holding out...

The only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger is knowing as a fact as soon as I place my order and they ship it, they'll also announce the next iteration. Guaranteed.
