Will you take a pint of optimism? Come on, it's good for morale.

Frontier Developments has launched a Kickstarter UK project “Elite: Dangerous”. A High-end, Multi-player Sequel to the Classic Open-world Space Trading / Combat Game Featuring Multi-Player and More to be Released Early 2014. "This is the game I have wanted Frontier to make for a very long time. The next game in the Elite series - an amazing space epic with stunning visuals, incredible gameplay and breath-taking scope, and also fully multi-player." said Frontier founder and CEO David Braben. "Frontier has been working on this project, in the background, for several years now, building a foundation of technology and tools. Imagine what is now possible, squeezing the last drop of performance from modern computers in the way the previous games did in their days? It is not only a question of raw performance, though of course this will make it a gorgeous and incredibly rich experience, but we are pushing the multi-player networking implementation too." "Kickstarter is great because as long as we hit the threshold, it commits us to making the game." added Braben. "From where we are now, £1.25M/$2M will get us the minimum game based on our tech and artist-directed procedural generation techniques, but I am of course hoping we can get more than that as it will allow us to be even more ambitious and potentially cover other platforms - the community of contributors will be part of the discussion about the specifics of any such decisions." We're absolutely committed to working with you on this development. Please, please contribute in any way you can, and help us spread the word – this is a game we'd LOVE to make!!

:D

Does anyone else worry that they may have hyped themselves into a state whereby E: D cannot possibly deliver, even if it is fantabulosa?

I think I may find myself guilty as charged.

I'm late to this party, I've only just bought in to the whole kick starter thing. But I'm already desperate for the Beta, which is great but historically I've always found betas a bad thing for my excitement in a game. Your all hyped for the game but your first experience is only a part of the game. It's destroyed my excitement for more than one game.

Elite was such a formative part of my childhood gaming that there's no way anything could live up to my expectations. Now that I've accepted that it will hopefully keep my expectations manageable.

Ah well yes i have been burned by the hype before...

Black & White 2
Spore
Diablo 3
Oh I'm forgetting a few I'm sure....

Anyway, im staying cautious on this one, purely because i know sometimes sandbox games and i have a love hate relationship, where i just get a little aimless. That being said, i was always a fan of privateer, descent: freespace... And i have longed to get back into the genre for a while.

I toyed with the X series but got bored quickly, alas and i wanted better visuals and some how i just skipped Freelancer.

I have pledged for this though, so im bought into the concepts of this game much more than any other game previously. So, cautious optimism?! I think that also stems from the underwhelming PR campaign for this... A lot is riding on the diaries revealing concepts, but up until now we have seen precious little gameplay revealed and it was only the capital ship video that made me up my levels of interest in the concepts to excitement.

I think once i see procedural generation in action a little more in space layouts and a few more ships, plus some trade screens etc... Then it will be hard to stay grounded, but until then im sticking with cautiously optimistic.

Me too.

Bad, bad Frontier Developments, for making us wait 20 years!

Nah, I can still play the original, and OOlite just as well. FE/FFE I actually found quite easy in combat now, fly at an odd angle accelerating sort towards the attacker side to side or up and downing a little, then directly at them on full reverse throttle..

Oolite is by far the hardest, but still I can do well... It's just... well they're NPC's, ED will have real people in too.

Spore burned me bad.. real bad.. but i blame EA :D

I have waited diablo 3 for long years after D2, but I was not disapointed by D3. It' s good Diablo, I really enjoy playing it :)

I agree. I'm confident the game will be all I imagine and more, but whether I will be able to connect emotionally to the game on the level it is currently running in my head, possibly not. But maybe that's a good thing, I might still do some work occasionally as well ;)

I am not too worried about being disappointed or bothered by my anticipation of the game - the recent Capital ship "music" video did a lot to alleviate some doubts; the DDF has demonstrated that behind the scenes FD are extremely interested in the nuts and bolts; so no .. I am sure FD will deliver something most excellent and this thread will be smiled upon :)

This game will be amazing. This is David Braben we are talking about not Peter Molyneux the arch lord of over-promising. I fully believe David will back up all the talk with a game that we are all going to love (well most of us anyway, there are some folk who will never be happy!). Look at Frontiers track record, look at the care and attention going into every last detail. This will be great, how great is the question. I'm putting all my faith into "legendary", if it's not I have an ample supply of pitchforks and torches.....anyone got any matches??? ;)

Uuh, laser?

Personally, I think the bare bones idea of a galaxy explorer where you can wander around star systems is pretty exciting in itself. I found that the concept system view picture they put up is the one I keep going back to!

Their biggest difficulty will be the combat, which was, let's face it, either extremely simple or off-puttingly unintuitive in previous versions. It sounds to me like they're almost taking an FTL-style systems management approach to things, which (like FTL) sounds dull but can be enormously satisfying. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I've no idea where I stand on the game being multiplayer. It's clearly what Braben and the team are most excited about, but I'm a cowardly MMO virgin and can't really get much of a grasp on it.

How could you not be?
Dumbed down stat mechanics, tedious chapters until you reached Hell and then you were transformed from never dying to being 1 hit killed by ridiculous mobs, auction house mess, terrible useless boring loot.

I still play it now and again and I hope the expansion helps sort out my disappointment. I played solidly for the first 2 months and then quit, so it could be a lot has been improved since then that i am yet to notice with the odd 5-10mins I plow in now and again.

Now they remove the auction house.. so now you can grind even more for items that might help you progress.. :D

Honestly i think removing the auction house is a good idea...

:p Yep i am guilty of over-hyping myself and my expectations are over the moon and far beyond for this game.

I am dreaming of a lost in space movie in my head whit me in the main role, doing all kinds of misadventures in space and on alien worlds.

But i recon it be 2015 before the game comes even close to my dreams and hopes for this game.:D

Yes D3 is not perfect, but it's very good a hack and slash ... Blizzard has perhaps made some mistakes but they tried to do things different.
With the soul reaper expension, exit the auction house and welcome to the crusader :)

Perhaps I am not also demanding today than years ago ... :)

I think D3 problem was that it was hyped beyond any reasonable means - after all, while D1 and D2 were hugely popular, it were just solid hack and slash games. High quality, but just hack and slash. Even more, D2 was so insanely big, that people expected really something different here. Also mainstream culture of gaming changed. When D2 was released, insane long hours for one game was nothing unusual. Now short term fun has replaced long and sometimes tedious grinding which was signature of D1 and D2 games.

Combine this sea change with hidden DRM, and you get lot of angry fans.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Yeah, I was over D3 pretty quickly. Can't believe I got that day 1.

Back to the point at hand, yes... I suppose it's definitely possible to psych yourself up so much for a game that it can't help but disappoint. I don't know what the solution to that is aside from just forgetting about ED until it's released. I suppose that would work for some, but I have too much fun around here speculating with you all. :D

Its possible, I've been waiting for this for over 25 years. It better be a good game or I'll be turning up at Frontier with pitch forks and torches. Yet it is only a game after-all. I have had high hopes for it since the KS, but what we have been shown so far has generally exceeded my expectations. :)

My main concern is whether my machine can handle it, with the new boy, the wife isn't going to let me spend much on upgrades.
