In a hurry there, pup?

You gotta remember that, heading in especially, a game play element is based on speed, to beat the scan with my large hull full of prohibiteds. So yeas and sorry, I'm playing my game and I'm in a hurry!

It's not really reasonable to expect somebody driving a T9 to stop and get out of the way of a small(er) ship, even if they can.

But, this does illustrate the need (expounded by others elsewhere) for some sort of traffic control / queue system. Docking computers and NPCs seem to use a queue for entry (and probably egress in the NPC case), but there's no way for players who are flying on manual to participate in this.

If you're there watching you can even slip an Anaconda past a Type 9. It would be nice if the docking computer worked better for those who wanted to use up a slot on it, but I imagine that's very hard. Passing through the slot isn't consistent, especially when you put real people flying in control.

It's a long and tedious grind to get a T9. When you reach it you find one of the game's true pleasures: watching other ships duck and dive to get out of the way of you. Or if they don't, pushing them all the way back where they came from.

Swatting other vessels aside like flies is the reward that comes with having the ship.

Id like to see a flight corridor in the HUD you get assigned to by the stations traffic controller. Leave or ignore it, get a fine. Leave or ignore it constantly, get a bounty.Your choice. But maybe this is too german ;)

I must confess that I used to use the docking computer all the time. Mainly it gave me a break, and gave me a moment to pour another glass of red, but I also found it invaluable in those out of the way landing pad things, where I could never spot where to land. Admittedly I often had to take over half-way through as some of those pads are quite hard for the poor DC to get into. Mostly I was just bumming around areas where there were no other CMDRs so did'nt have any incidents.

Then I went to help out in Yembo, and had to get rid of the thing - it was way too polite. It seemed to spend its whole time "Waiting in Queue" (how very British) while all the CMDRs (who all seem to have the manners of a French schoolbkid waiting for a skilift) just whizzed past in and out at full pelt. My poor polite British Docking Computer could only stand to one side while it waited for a suitable gap in the traffic which was never going to appear.

Anyway, I get an extra 4 cargo in my T6 now, and drink less red wine, so perhaps it is for the better.

... Look, I get that some folks are in a hurry (especially T-9s) but you've got to respect some kind of good sense...

LOL
No, You've got to pay attention. At least, whenever there is ANYTHING else in the vicinity, in case it tries to destroy you, and sometimes, it will.
In previous versions of Elite, if you activated your docking computer behind the station, it would try to take you in through the back entrance.
There was no back entrance.
In deep space? Need a comfort break? No problem: Just drop out of SC. You can't be interdicted in normal space. (But hitting boost a couple of times might be an idea, in case anyone tries to follow you).
At all other times, be aware of your surroundings. The hint is in the name: Elite Dangerous.

So here's the report: When I come into port with my T-6, I actually prefer to use the docking computer. Gives me a momentary breather, in which I can browse forums or other news, grab another tasty beverage or whatever but a few times in recent history (the last 2 or 3 days) I've turned away to read a news post and suddenly *KLANG* Rush to disengage the autopilot before I'm blasted for loitering (one incident I was backed out and re-entered, still on auto and was charged with entering without clearance) The culprit: typically a T-9 on the outbound, trying to blast out of the bay as fast as humanly possible. No damage to me and I'm presuming there was no damage to the other ship, because I didn't get a "HEY?! Watch where you're going!" But it did cause a pileup at the gate. Had to cancel my clearance and re-shoot my approach after the NPC ships cleared out.
Look, I get that some folks are in a hurry (especially T-9s) but you've got to respect some kind of good sense, especially as a larger vessel or you wind up causing more delays and navigational hazards than your afterburner can compensate for. I typically respect the 'gross-tonnage right-of-way' concept (he with the most tonnage has the right of way) But if I'm already on final, on an auto-dock, the computer is flying and I'm not necessarily readily able to move out of your way, just because you want to blast out of the mail-slot at 50% of light speed so you can squeeze that extra 1000 cr/hr out of your run.
I'm not sure what the solution is (or if there even really needs to be a 'solution'), but I do know, from practical experience, that aircraft and maritime traffic on earth already have methods of avoiding incidents like these, even in 'uncontrolled' situations. USCG 'rules of the road' & FAA 'self-announce' procedures at un-towered airports, although that won't work because as I understand it, communication in e:d is point-to-point (you have to target a ship to communicate) You can't just broadcast 'in the clear' as it were, to the local aria.
Perhaps the takeaway is more along the lines of: use a little caution and good sense, especially when there are real players in the aria. A smaller ship might be able to shoot out between the wall and an Anaconda, but when you try to force a T-9 out of a busy port, it never ends well. In maritime and aviation regulation and advisory, the vessel that is traveling faster has to yield right of way to slower traffic. I.E.: if you insist on blasting out of the bay at top speed, it's YOUR job to go around THEM, not their job to get out of your way. Even when there is no real damage, the NPCs may just shrug it off, but a player might get a lil annoyed... Just be aware.

I have to agree, really get fed up with everyone getting in the way at busy stations. Just have a me me me attitude.

What i do in these situations is

1. Line up with letterbox
2. Activate IDIOT AVOIDANCE SYSTEM (solo mode)
3. Request docking permission
3. Active autopilot

On the way back out

1. Launch
2. DE-Activate IDIOT AVOIDANCE SYSTEM (open mode)
3. Instantly outside station

Why do i do this? I HATE DOCKING - life is too short for that guff

I do however manually dock at outposts, nothing like the equivalent of a hand brake turn and then dunking it on the pad.

Works every time.

So those lambasting him for using a docking computer, I would ask what's the point of having a docking computer in the game?

1.1 highlighted that the access and egress is problematic, with NPC's just bulldozing their way through. I would expect a suitably expensive docking computer to handle these situations.

Nostalgia, mainly.
In the original Elite game, docking was extremely difficult to get the hang of. So you either mastered the art, or invented something wacky that worked for you (I just lined up with the slot, waited for it to get nearly horizontal, then MAX THRUST and hope for the best). No joysticks in them days.
So you bought a docking computer, and realised its limitations when the Blue Danube suddenly ended with an unexpected BOOM! Thereafter, you paid attention, even with the DC on.
In Beta when the docking computer first appeared, I bought one just to hear the Blue Danube. I sold it pretty quick.
Docking in ED is easy. Even in a T9.

I don't disagree, my comment was more about getting his money back through the warranty.

Great way to start a Friday.

Every time you encounter a sarcastic comment in this thread you take a shot.

Arrange the mini-cab ride home first. You'll be legless by the end of page 2.

LOL i'm totally up for that game. Going for a couple of bottles of whisky BRB

Have some rep
