So was multiplayer worth it...

You, Sir, realize that according to the polls 75% of pilots play in Open? Let's ask FD if their successful money stream is worth it.

Multiplayer in ED ,for me at least is a nice bonus extra, but for me it's not an important part of the game ,nor do I think it will be, even if I do like to enjoy to meet People ingame every once in a while.
.
:) Hopefully it'll get more co-op friendly

I mean was the necessity to have multiplayer in game worth all the limitations that it introduces?

Like,
Instances,
Speed limits,
Combat flight model,
Non seamless transition between SC, HS and combat space
Non possibility to travel in super cruise between systems
Loading Screens(hyper space)

ETC

Is the current multiplayer model worth it?

I am a solo player by default because I bought the game to play it the way I want to play it and solo allows me to do that without watching over my shoulder... Multiplayer does not interest me in the slightest

Can't say that I'm really into MP, perhaps I'm just not aggressive enough. ;) But I have no problem with it, I can play any way I choose, PvP, PvE, whatever, but what I do like about the online aspect of it is the potential for development that exists that will hopefully enrich the game and prolong it's playability.

I see that they have updated the bounty list on Galnet. So time to put the multiplayer to use and hunt some commander pirates :)

Go to YouTube and type in ISINONA, and watch his latest video. It's 34 mins of pure ED fun! This is how good multiplayer is right now on Elite Dangerous.
All the guys Isinona meets in this story have also added their perspective in the YouTube comments section on the video. Absolutely superb!!!

He is a skilled in flying with FAOFF. But I could never play the game as he does. The bounty hunt in the videos clearly shows the shortcomings of multiplayer in the game. How useless the bounty list is and how broken game mechanics are when it is so easy for other commanders to escape with fsd in pvp.

I second that I would not have even considered buying this game if it did not have the multiplayer component to it. And I say this as a primarily SINGLE player gamer.

All my favorite games of all time have been single player:

1. Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas. Best PC games ever(that I can remember, cant remember the old Atari 800XL games from my youth...)
2. Far Cry 4 was an amazing primarily single player game. 3 was too. Original Crysis.
3. Dragon Age Inquisitions is decent, and I play single only.
4. Grand Theft Auto games, great games and single player
5. Operation Flashpoint, Arma 2, and Arma 3. I enjoyed all solely for the single player campaigns.
6. all the old school top down isometric squad based combat games....

Now along comes ED. It just looks really really boring if you took away the chance for PvP and to meet other players. Why would I ever grind for hours, making credits, just to get a bigger ship that I cant even see and feels just like the smaller ship with different maneuverability and speed coefficients and more guns?

I just wouldn't see any motivation to play this game if there weren't other commanders floating around, hostile or not.

Was it worth it?

The game paid a painful/harsh price to implement it. Though ,still it's a popular feature, I'm not so selfish, I can't be happy for those who enjoy mp.

:) Overall the game is enjoyable, though ........ FD , gimme/us offline mode!

No, I don't think multiplayer was worth it, because:

(a) NPCs are dumb and non-persistent, even for solo players
(b) we got rooms in space and supercruise instead of something better
(c) frankly a lot of people don't seem to want to interact

I *loved* PvP racing in rFactor, it was fun in IL2 until people started cheating, and I remember when I first played Kerbal wondering why it was only single player; but it turned out just fine. Multiplayer in Elite is an interesting but failed experiment, imo.

Still love the game though :)

I think they should have decided on multi-only or sp-only right before the KS campaign. The way the game handles it ATM breaks solo- and multiplayer as well.

worth it... hmm

For those restrictions, no it probably wasn't worth it. For those restrictions but getting the game made which it's very doubtful it would have been without multiplayer, yes it was worth it.

Those restrictions are a huge problem but they are NOT going away ever unless FD decide to redesign the game engine around a server based single galaxy. Some of the rough edges may get smoothed away over time but the instanced sky box peer to peer multiplayer game system is what we have and its what will remain, if you think it will change I think you might be delusional ;)

what poll? a poll on the forum? or one that FD has compiled actually sampling the game playing population.

IMHO, as the game currently stands, and for all the reasons you mention, 'no'.

I would have preferred all the effort being sunk into a super-immersive single-player game. Could have been awesome.

One day, it might be the super multiplayer game promised and many wanted though. Hope it works out.

Amen. I'd have rather the multiplayer budget have been spent on better AI and a plausible single player galaxy simulation - but I'm enjoying what we got, for all its shortcomings.

At the moment no, especially as I play solo anyway.

Whatever Elite is, it's not a finished game, maybe MP will be worth it eventually, but for now all the MP hassles mean I, as a single player, don't have a game with any depth.

Combat, Visuals and Audio are fantastic, unfortunately that's all there really is right now. I've put hundreds of hours into it, but now I'm just waiting for feature updates, and all the main ones talked about are MP improvements. Hardly surprising then that as a single-player gamer, I'm a bit disappointed right now.

MP is the most important part of the game, it maybe just the core functionality in atm, but thats enough to get players in and playing.

I wouldn't disagree but there would not have been a multiplayer budget if there was not going to be multiplayer ;)

I like the multiplayer concept but I've only come across 3 or 4 other players in my time playing (and I started just before beta ended).

So, I love the idea but I'm yet to see it in action.
