Exploring : What a blast and relaxing

Since Gamma I stayed away from exploring due to the fear of the bugs. But since V1.1 I have made enough credits with my T9 to buy an additional fully kitted out Asp for exploration and I am about 5 days into my voyage of the near by Nebula's

I have visited quite a few along the way and I am currently at the Horsehead Nebula, one that I have imaged many times from my backyard telescope.

Exploration is amazing, the colours once you get out to the nebula's, the views, the relaxation of being out there alone brings a whole new meaning to ED. One that buzzing around the common areas just doesn't show. There is so much more to ED than just trading and flying between the same stations, or hanging around nav points bounty hunting. Yes I have done all of these since gamma and I needed a change and I am so glad I did.

400 billion systems : Well I will tell you now, go near the nebula's on the galaxy map and you will be surprised how many of them have already been bagged by players. I have visited over 600 systems in 4 days and have only found 5 systems that no-one has been too. Granted, I am visiting the popular nebula regions, but the Orion Nebula has over 2000 systems and all of them have pretty much been discovered by someone. Quite amazing and I guess in 12 months time you will have to travel very far and very remote to bag a new system for yourself. One of the reasons I set off now exploring to get my name on some systems.

I am doing quite well, no major issues once I got past the Plieades region with interdictions and haven't seen a NPC for 300 systems now.

I use the Oculus DK2 and the views are amazing, having to drop to a flat screen to take this pictures was painful :)

A few piccies of the HorseHead region. Rendered amazingly well and just as I imagined.

So I urge you, getting bored of ED and the grind ? Need a change ?

Kit out an Asp and set off out and see what more ED has to offer. Who knows a few weeks later when you reach civilisation again, they may have added more features :)

A quick Shadow Play video of the area of space I am currently in :)

Me too. I decided to take a break from trade grinding after the end of the Seeking Luxuries spree, so refitted my Clipper and offski ... Just back out again after returning for re-arming and repairs (interdictions by Dangerous-rated NPC Anacondas & Pythons; nice fat bounties though :) )

I didn't travel more than 300 LY from my home base, traded in around 120 systems worth of data and found I was first discoverer for around 300 stellar objects. Ranked up to Pathfinder too.

Nice one mate, I am on my way back from a 1500ly trip to Orion and surrounding areas. Got out of the Orion area, now about 950ly from home and set the route planner to economic to pick up more systems on the way back until I start to run into NPC's again. Then will boost full 35ly jump back home after hitting 1st station to hand in the data.

I reckon I have about 300+ systems and currently about 10 completely new systems to my name at the moment.

I very much enjoyed my trip out to a few of the nebulae. Timed my return to coincide with 1.1, and once I could actually sell my data I had (as planned) enough credits to safely trade up to the clipper. It's a joy to fly and makes me a lot of profit from a few trade routes I know. It's also ruined my game a little though, as I now can't imagine flying anything else (until/unless the courier appears), which has made earning credits a bit pointless.

So I think I'll have to go exploring again. Probably not out that far, will just pick a random section of not too distant space and plot a route one system at a time, paying particular attention to star types and my fuel tank of course.

While lots of systems in and around the nebulae and other interesting spots have been discovered, there are definitely still plenty in between that haven't. Will see if I can find an interesting one or two. :)

Do not try to auto repair FSD, Thrusters or any power units when in SC :)

It of course drops you out emergency and does you more damage to hull and the units you wanted to repair :D:D

DOH !!!!

I am finding this on the economical route planner back home. Finding a lot of undiscovered systems between the major tourist attractions that people have just jumped over :)

About 750ly from home now, slowly working my way back. Up to 15 completed new systems discovered by me :)

tell me about it - got down to 76% hull in a 3000 YL+ trip simply because of really stupid learning/idiotic mistakes like that - worst one was in attempt to work out how to use the AR kit i switched the thruwters off - which had the same effect - bang - 5% more gone...

Yes i did the same - i am 89 hull completely stupid mistake ... but i beleive that there should be some automatic sytem to tell you or throw you out of supercruise. But the designers like the game to be a bit medieval. Technology is like plugging cathode tubes in your bathtub.

I am 3000 LY and still going haven't stop in any nebula yet but just found a 89 object system with a few water worlds ... i like those. In my area i haven't seen any discovered system for days now. i was going up the sol spiral ... Orion arm ? and now i am moving to the interior arm -Scrutum -Sagitarius? - in order to reach the galactic center - 20000ly to go and 22000 back that will be a total of aprox 1400 jumps.
I will definetely stop in a nebula on the way now that i have seen the videos ...

Just got back frim the Eagle nebula myself, i had to turn around at 50% hull, couple of silly mistakes and your ship gets broken easily. I hit a system with no less than 3 hot stars in very close proximity, instant 230% heat...

I have brought some heat sinks and a field repair unit this time. I have to say exploring really is the game for me, I thought it wouldnt be intersting at first but now i am hooked. I am filling my HDD up with in game screenshots at an alarming rate. 22000 LY to Sagittarius A...

An excellent post of a very good journey--- R+ OP I'm not at all tired of trading but a long exploration trip sounds like great fun

Understand that perfectly - me and a friend of mine want to go for a tour as well within the next few weeks. Exploration, while not as profitable as doing trade, gives you those jaw dropping moments  Was on a trading run myself when i found this. So yea, can't wait to go for a tour myself on the far edges of known space :)

My procedure is as follows

1. Jump to next destination
2. Throttle to zero. Saved me many times from frying on arrival
3. Disco Scan
4. Target Star and detail it
5. System map to see if discovered . V1.1 onwards as shows discover player
6. If new system ,not discovered, scan it all except belts
7. If already found, scan only stars and gas giants if under 10,000ls away
8. Move on

Been about 2000ly travel and only mistakes are my own with auto repair so far, touch wood.

There is actually a sticker in one of the cockpits, the hauler i believe, that says "no maintenance while engines running"

Nice, only flew the Hauler once for about 10 trading runs way back :)

Ok called it a night, 633ly from home, still no NPC's and just jumped into a large system of crappy planets undiscovered and my OCD says I have to scan them all, but tomorrow night as work tomorrow :)

LOL, ED, just one more system scan honest, eh, I jumped again and repeat :D

Good luck all Cmdrs on your explorations :)

Glad they helped, 1st time I have tried ShadowPlay am I am really impressed with it :)

I dont find it over stimulating and it will sure make the rest of the game awesome again when i return to civilization..... whenever that is. Im just kinda meandering towards the core, maybe go on through it just to claim a system on the other side just to say i have.

But i dont plan on returning until my wind screen starts to crack... As long as i manage my time in SC it should be for as long as i want. Anything past 20kLs will have to be worth the wear and tear.

When does your wind shield start to crack ? Is it just wear and tear that does it ?

Also trying to work out how to repair power unit, mine is at 95% so loads left, but interested. I might try out of SC, powering everything off and see if I can repair it, but I guess the auto repair needs power and so would be a chicken and egg moment. Will give it a go when I have returned and sold my data.

Yip, have to agree with the OP. Been trading, bounty hunting, mining, rares etc.... Once i got my anaconda i was kinda bored so bought an 'A' kitted Asp, with weapons and sheilds (27.5ly laden jump range), and headed out into the unknown. Second star on the right kind of thing. Been out a week, covered about 7000ly but not in a straight line. I have to say I have been lucky, off the beaten track so haven't come across many pre discovered. Been scanning and scooping like a boss. Did have an accident with a black hole but managed to keep damage to only 2% hull. Did the same as mentioned before, i tried to repair thrusters while in SC doh!! so thats me down to 97% not too bad for distance traveled, lessons learned so hopefully won't have any more moments. I have a plan now of where I am going but will probably be meandering along the route mostly. I reckon it will be about another 70000ly before i am back home. Just worried about wear and tear without landing at a base I can't see any way to see how much I am taking.

PS the repair unit won't fix your power unit or your hull, just all the other systems so keep your eye on them. As far as i know your windscreen doesn't crack with wear and tear, it only starts to crack with hull damage but i could be wrong. I expect my hull integrity to be close to 0 by the time i get back. If i make it that is :D

I love it, too. I can set course for something I want to do a surface scan of, then work a bit, and keep an ear tuned to the sounds. It's nice when I'm far enough out that I can AFK a bit, too.

Very relaxing and beautiful; rewarding when I find a water world or an earth-like planet.
