Anyone read the..

Hello there

As a moderator on another large PC game forum, we dont tend to follow each rule by the exact letter.

Much like a T&C that we all agree to but never read.

On the whole forum rules might sound draconian, but if implemented properly by the staff only serve to assist the forum users in the long term.

Worry not. Tin foil hats off, please.

I never understood the reason behind law-book lengthy forum rules.

Indeed, if the moderators say is final then why list every offence? As long as it is "policed" with common sense. All sounds like perfunctory sabre rattling, or perhaps they just want to reduce the forum user base?

To cover all eventualities.

Many paragraphs will likely never need to be applied, but if you leave anything uncovered in the rules, you can be sure somebody will find the loop hole and exploit it.

It's not really all that different from an other sort of legislation, the idea behind it makes sense.....and it keeps an army of lawyers from going unemployed. :D

Can you name an eventuality that isn't resolved by banning the user, stating "We don't like your tone", with no written rules in place at all?

It's for the few guys who absolutely cannot take a hint. So that they can't whinge about being treated unfairly or 'moderator abuse' after getting the ban-stick in their faces. (Or the incessant discussions afterwards by posters whether the ban was merited or not). In that case you just point to the rule and that's the end of it.

Especially something like this (from the Diablo forum rules)
Thou Shalt Not Mention "Freedom of Speech." Or we'll vomit. All over your Treads of Cthon, we promise you.

You can't whine about being treated unfairly if you have no permission to post.

And just to be clear, I have moderated a long time ago a gaming board with thousands of active users, and we did not have any sort of forum rules in place whatsoever. We just warned and banned if people acted up. It worked out perfectly, and the board is still online today.

The only one that worries me is the Off-Topic. If that is the case, then there will be a LOT of infractions.

If it is used just to keep a topic from being derailed then that is one thing, but since they don't specifically state examples, I am hoping they will use common sense. Otherwise we are all in for a world of 1 points :)

Sort of like keeping to the side exiting and entering a station: Its a good idea in practice, but most don't follow it. <- 1 point.
:p

I only see good changes.

I still want forum users to be tied to your CMDR name, just like Blizzard does with their games.

The problem with this is the minute you enforce one rule against person A and not person B you discriminate. If you aren't prepared to enforce ALL the rules ALL the time then they become a weapon.

And im on another large official game forum as well, and there we are quite hard on the rules. For the simple reason there is so much posts, and if people didnt follow the rules it would be mayhem (it already kinda is - even with the rules). :D *Off to read the new FD rules...*
