When buying a new ship, how should I sell my old one?

I'm getting close to being able to buy my Asp and sell my Cobra. But I know that I only get part of my credits back when I sell it once I buy my new ship.

Should I try to sell each component separately in outfitting, until the cheapest components are left on my cobra, and then sell? Would that help me keep more credits from the cost of the old ship?

If you are going to sell your old ship, the best thing to do is strip it down first. Sell everything that can be sold. Where you must have one (like an FSD) then swap it out for the cheapest one you can fit. The reason for this is that you get full price on stuff you sell in outfitting, but only 90% when you sell the ship.

You might, however, just keep the old ship. I suspect you need the cash tied up in the upgrades in the Cobra, but I eventually went back to buy a VIper as a toy to go pew-pew in, leaving the Asp as an exploring ship.

first, make sure you save enough credits to cover insurance.

Sell all of the modules you can and downgrade to the least expensive for the ones that must be installed. You get full value when selling modules. Installed modules do not receive full value when trading in your ship.

Your sold modules will be available to purchase and installation on your new ship even if the station normally doesn't carry them. Just be sure to buy back what you want before leaving the station (no test flight) as they will not stay available forever.

Make sure you have at least 10M before you buy the Asp. Its a good ship, but dont go eyeballs out into combat in a basic asp, you will get mullered and the repair costs are high. Upgrade shields first, and thrusters, then you can have some fun.

I'm hoping to own at least one ship in each "class". I've got my combat viper parked. I've worked my way up to a Type-9 via type-6, asp and type-7. I am now using the type-9 to gather funds to buy and pimp a asp exporer and later a python or a anaconda as a large combat vessel, keeping the type-9.

i sold mine without sell components before... so il lost money?

Yes. 10% from all system components. An odd mechanic isn't it? I wish FD would be consistent here. It only hurts new players. I love the game, but this screams out: lazy programming (and I'm a programmer) -- it's really easy to take the cost computed for insurance reasons and multiply by 0.9

Im not 100% sure on the sell components first thing.. I went to trade my t9 (hated it) in for my python and it said it would leave me with 22 million in the bank after trade in.. I went, sold everything on the t9, bought the python, and had.... 22 million in the bank...

so im not saying it does or doesnt take 10%.. or even if it should, and its broken.. but from the above, it didnt seem to make any difference for me which route i took

Hmm. It would be great to get confirmation on this one. If it works consistently with both methods, then I take back my previous statements.

I'll try this tonight with a Cobra or something at Khasiri since everything is 20% off.

See if I get more back selling a Cobra with 4A FSD parting it out or just selling it from the extra ships menu.

?? So this is really what happened. I was wondering why my calculations were so much off..

I tested this the other night when upgrading the FSD in my Asp.
The new trade in value was "off" by exactly 10% of the purchase price for the FSD.
I try not to think about it as I've traded in at least 4 ships since I started playing.

As many already suggested you on how to sell your cobra, I'm going to suggest you to keep it.

You never know how you'll end up, you might need a backup ship for some reason.

It is an odd mechanic indeed. But I am happy that I can sell modules for 100%, I change them so often that I would have lost 10.000.000 credits by now...
