You may be right here....just heading outbound now, so far I've not noticed any difference.

I'm trading in Open, within 200 LY of core systems and haven't seen one human player since probably Saturday morning (today being Thursday). That's maybe 16 hours play.

oh that makes me sad....

Why was the poll closed after only 20 votes?

Then this will make you cry

Will Solo / Private Group Kill ED?

Yes 13% (60 votes)
No 87% (399 votes)

Thanks...and a simple should open/solo be split? Just seeing how friendly google is....

And what would that prove? Because a forum with just under 79K members is a really accurate population set for a player-base in excess of 300K, honest. Or did you mean the poll with 20 votes total for an even more accurate data set?

When I first started playing about 3/4 weeks ago I played only in "SOLO" (a nice way to learn the game) I now play totally in "OPEN" and I am a trader and yes I do have shields, it is nice to encounter fellow commanders, makes the game feel alive.
I have never been interdicted by a human player, maybe because I trade away from the traffic, so I would say to traders in my opinion you have little to fear from pirates and gaming psychopaths if you stay away from Sol, Leesti, Diso etc etc.
I trade in an Asp with a nice pirate paint job, I like to hail fellow traders at they leave the Starport, one look at my pirate colors and they are off like a shot!
I might try my hand at pirating one day looks fun lol.

I also like the three modes of play, every one to their own I say.

Really? I'm about 140LY out from Leesti I think and I've seen plenty. I am near another rares cluster mind, doubtless a well known place too.

Actually - in a real poll a sample size of 1 in 4 would be awesomely valid.

It would be an approximation hopefully....that's what polls are for....

The rares clusters are great places to camp for new pilots, hence the make-up of the fleet in that area. Might give an inkling into the minds of said pilots, but then again I could be reading too much into it. <keeping wry smile to myself>

Of course, only thing is really telling though - how many people actually respond to a poll. If it was something that was like so close to the heart of the community, you would have a greater response. The fact is, people looked at the boards, saw the poll and went... Meh! and carried on their way.

An indication, possibly, that it is a non-issue (that the mods wrapped up in to one thread cause too many people were cluttering up the boards with it at one point. Oxymoron someone?)

IMHO the game shouldn't have been open / solo / group mode. It should have been open mode only. Period.
One can argue that people should have a choice how they want to play the game, but IMHO it is up to the game designers what those choices are.
For instance, if you could choose to start the game with 1.000.000.000 credits and a pair of +5 Beam Lasers of Awesomeness, then of course I and most other people would say yes please to that choice. There would always be a few people who'd say no to it, arguing that they wanted the full experience from scratch.
Similarly, we can now choose to go open or solo, and it's only natural that those who want to trade takes the route of least resistance, which is solo.
I think it was a bad design decision to separate open and solo. If it was just open, FD could / would have focused more on how to set the rules and balance so that both PvP'ers and PvE'ers could coexist. As is, too many players float about in their own alternate reality dead solo universe, while open mode decays into a fragfest.
If FD had said from the beginning that "you must all play in open, and we'll do what we can to make sure that most are happy with that", then people would eventually have accepted and adapted.

This is of course all my humble opinion, and I accept that many, including the game designers, disagree.

Now that you mention it, this is another example where ED has it completely backwards from every other MMO/multiplayer game.

Rares route seems to be more of the n00b area; the guys that managed to save up a million bucks or so and are piloting their Cobra back and forth to start making REAL money.

Ironically, the new player routes are MORE dangerous; you're far safer after achieving your type 6/7/asp than before (assuming you ditch rares trading for more standard commodity trading).

At least this has been my experience.

I'm trading at this moment about 80 light years from Sol, I have never encountered a pirate and I do play 5-6 hrs at a time, the only grief I have had from a fellow player was someone who deliberately rammed me in the letterbox.
I must be just lucky.

Yea. I traded round there in my Asp. I guess because Asps can fight back I was left alone despite my bulging hold. That and I know how to avoid interdictions for the most part.

Having said that I've been in the Lave system when it's supposedly teeming with hostiles and barely seen anything. The small instance size combined with geographical and ping selection probably gives us vastly different views. And I bet the same mechanisms are going to play merry hell with Wings.

Beam Lasers of Awesomeness - Telling but brilliant at the same time. (Telling by your choice of equipment ;) )

However, this second point I've picked out of yours is not what is evidenced. Just read a few posts up:

But it's not, the 79K is the total number of Frontier forum members, not ED forum posters. That's not even vaguely approximate.

A sample response of 400 would be enough if chosen according to a good methodology. A sample of 400 is good enough for most polls. But it's just a forum poll. The point is unless someone has some evidence to the contrary - reviews, blogs, tube rants etc - people are perfectly happy with how things are. The forum certainly isn't swamped with people up in arms about the existence of modes.

Yeah, I realise that the brutality in open mode may be a bit exaggerated by this forum, and that it's not always that bad. Though many, including myself, has the impression that open mode is a very dangerous place, and that's enough to discourage it.

Everyone in my current location has been perfectly friendly but there are a fair few people about, we had one interdiction at the leesti end where I failed to protect my buddy in his T6. He ended up dropping 6 barrels while I shot up the Asp and we were on our way.
