Could this canned project become the Planetary/ FPS element of ED ?

Never really understood why people who are presumably Ok with shooting the crepe out of spacecraft have such a downer about shooting people who aren't in spacecraft.
I think it is because they don't want Elite Dangerous to become another First Person Shooter clone, they want ED to be different.
Also, people are getting the abbreviations confused, the expansion isn't FPS it's EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity) unless I missed a memo somewhere.

And yes, it's long been speculated that development on The Outsider would be used in Elite Dangerous, but only Frontier can know for sure and if they don't want to comment on it, they won't.

I'd like landing on planets to be more about exploration than FPS, any shooting bit could be limited to missions so it's avoidable for people who don't want it

Apparently 'Hunting the wildlife' is an idea they have.
Would we obtain rare valuable items like skins through hunting ?
As well as the other interesting ideas no doubt.

To be honest, the idea sounds great. I think most of the people opposed to getting a FPS part into the game do not want to keep it out because they don't like FPS or want to kill the fun of others, but because it will take resources from the development process that should instead go into other parts of the game, for example filling the universe we already have with more things to do instead of adding even more places with barelay anything to do besides exploring (walking around aimlessly). At least that's my take on the subject.

I'm surprise they haven't reactivated the project yet, which I suspect is down to the IP still residing with Codemasters which is how these things usually works. I think this with updated graphics could be a hit for Frontier.

I hope the cities look as good as Washington DC does in that clip.

I see planetary landings part of really making other parts of the game more interesting and a lot more complete.

I posted my suggestions for the FPS-style gameplay a few weeks/months ago.

I think we should be able to board ships or stations as part of hostile missions.

Equipment should be provided statically based on mission requirements, etc. in a Counterstrike-style system; ergo, all attackers enter scenarios with X gear, all defenders enter with Y gear, and weapons/armor may be scavenged from the playfield as they're discovered.

Mission objectives could be to disable capital ships, take over capital ships, repel invaders from a friendly station, attack pirate base, or even assault/defend planetary assets like landing facilities, military bases, etc. I think defending a landing strip against a combined air/ground assault (sidewinders strafing with multicannons?) would be pretty amazing.

There'd be no need to have crafting, item/equipment slots, any of that. You get your kit like any soldier in a modern military unit.

I like that. Just add another tab in the outfitting section to outfit yourself

Well, well well.....great minds OP ;) it's clear that planetary landings and stations will get some future update to allow us to move around, but to what extent?

I'm vaguely remembering Mercenary in which you could get out of your ship (pretty sure it was that game anyway) but then you just kind of floated about. I can see FDev putting on some form of GTA/grounded style walking about element to the game but could it work as a separate paid extra?

We have to get into their mindset, they're not really making the game for us, it's for the shareholders right? So it's got to make money! There's no practical way you could have the walking around bit without the flying bit - you'd never be able to go anywhere - but they're going to have to make the walking around bit more interesting than just walking around looking at procedurally generated stuff.

Personally I'm extremely excited to see what might happen with this as it will add much more depth and openness to the game, more content we can choose to ignore or dive into.

*sigh*. No fps mode please.. Running around with a gun isn't elite and has never been a part of elite.

If you truly desire that, buy one of the millions of fps games that saturate all game platforms at the current time.

Times have changed. Games have grown. Get over it.

I said it before. It is my dream to pick up a rescue mission at a station in a warzone where I can set down my cobra outside a besieged starport or city and pick up soldiers or drop off equipment to them for continued deployment. All this in real time with other players on the ground fighting or in the skies providing air superiority support or ground attack......

It's 2015 it needs to happen I WANT to see a full OPEN universe look at all these FPS games.. what happened to open world they are all canned straight path shooters these days or enclosed arenas. Doom back in the 90s was a far more open game than what's on the market these days.

*lands Python*

*ejects 250 tons of soldiers neatly packaged in 1-ton canisters*

*takes off*

If you were a bounty hunter, and you chased your quarry to some backwater planet to find he'd landed and disembarked to do a runner in some Bladerunner-esque city setting, wouldn't that be just a little teensy weensy bit cool ? It may not be the Elite I grew up with, but it can be the Elite a new generation grow up with. Elite started legacy, that legacy can grow. It doesn't have to die an old man, filled with regret, waiting to die alone...or something....(couldn't round off the legacy analogy sorry)

This actually highlights to me a deeper rooted problem facing Elite: the audience is so polarised between 84/ FFE players wanting the same in 2015 and players wanting Elite to grow beyond the original concept. Braben and the Devs have said a few times now that landings and walking around will come. The game wants to evolve, I'm not so sure that some of the player community can evolve with it. If this comes as part of a paid expansion then you'll have the choice not to unlock those features at least, or even not participate in them if they are implemented as part of the core. But it is coming. Would you stop playingand cut your nose to spite your face over it ? I won't.

I'm not opposed to a FPS aspect to Elite. Heck, when EVE announced they were going to add WIS - I very vocally argued that it could be a good thing IF that walking around allowed for ship boarding and station raiding. I feel the same way for Elite, walking around in Stations, on Ships, or on Planets could add a lot of depth to the game - but only if it's done well. If it is merely a tacked on feature that isn't deep at all, then it's a waste of development time that could have been used for other systems.
