Could this canned project become the Planetary/ FPS element of ED ?

I'm not opposed to a FPS aspect to Elite. Heck, when EVE announced they were going to add WIS - I very vocally argued that it could be a good thing IF that walking around allowed for ship boarding and station raiding. I feel the same way for Elite, walking around in Stations, on Ships, or on Planets could add a lot of depth to the game - but only if it's done well. If it is merely a tacked on feature that isn't deep at all, then it's a waste of development time that could have been used for other systems.

FD and DB in particular have stressed that they want to get this absolutely right, so I'm not expecting this anytime soon. It may even come in stages; walking around ships, then station, then...

*lands Python*

*ejects 250 tons of soldiers neatly packaged in 1-ton canisters*

*takes off*

I'm more in favour of the original Starship Troopers (book) idea -

*get into orbit*

*drop neatly packaged 1t soldier "eggs"*

*profit* :D

I'd like landing on planets to be more about exploration than FPS, any shooting bit could be limited to missions so it's avoidable for people who don't want it
It'll easily be avoidable. Just don't buy "Elite : Deadly" (because this feature will not be free content. No way, no how)

I played Frontier Elite II on an Amiga 2000 back in the day. This makes me old enough to have been on the pier with Noah waiting for God to create the ocean. That said, I look forward to Elite evolving. Having played World of Warcraft for almost six years, I bring with me a lot of expectations that may or may not fit well with what is planned. Being old, I know my fingers just do not have the twitch you younger folks have. In WoW, there were places (Major cities) where it was much safer to walk about without worring about getting ganked by someone with evil intent. They also had PVE and PVP servers so the SOLO vs OPEN debate will probably continue to roll along. I also like to play Minecraft. Will we be able to build or influence the creation of in game content like cities, etc...? It would be a new game indeed if we could take control of a planet or system.

What ever they do it needs to be procedurally generated due to the vast number of planets, even populated planets are so many in ED.

So perhaps they can use assets with the procedural generation but they would not just take that product, they could take its assets, sounds and engine and then apply procedural generation within all that.

Any way it does show the graphical level with the cobra engine we can expect, so could be very good.

I think it is because they don't want Elite Dangerous to become another First Person Shooter clone, they want ED to be different.
Also, people are getting the abbreviations confused, the expansion isn't FPS it's EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity) unless I missed a memo somewhere.

And yes, it's long been speculated that development on The Outsider would be used in Elite Dangerous, but only Frontier can know for sure and if they don't want to comment on it, they won't.

But, how many games out there are a combination of distant space travel, ship customization and upgrades, character customization and upgrades, space missions, planet missions, station missions, landing on planets & exploration...

I'd like to see them figure out a way to tap into the unknown. There is stuff out there that our minds wouldn't be able to wrap around in a lifetime. I dunno how someone would go about it if even possible but it sure would grab attentions...

Looks surprisingly good, tbh. If they can add a *wide* variety of landscapes and cityscapes, and vehicles, and alien creatures, and varying gravity, it could be fun.

Each planet could be it's own game title , buy the ones you want to play . Fly up to the planet get the option to buy it or play it if you own it already ,you could even have the option to just buy the planet side games and not elite . Could you imagine coaster world being attacked from space ?

From 2007-2011 Frontier worked on a game called The Outsider, which turned into a Bourne Identity tie-in with Codemasters. The game got eventually canned due to funding being pulled but Frontier still own the IP I'd expect. So, purely speculating, given the GTA style gameplay and FPS/ Third-Person viewpoint, could the original concept be adapted to become what David Braben and the devs have hinted at will come to ED ? If so, then this gives a hint of what to expect....

The character models and animation look good. I'd like to see them in the game :)

Tthere seems to be a lack of understanding the consept "first person" .. the whole game is "first person" they should never ever change that. you should always be in "first person" mode.. the video in th OP is a "third person" game.
if they add third person for walking around that would break every bit of immersion. like suddenly you are not you anymore, you are a camera drone following a guy.. i really hope FD gets this little detail right..

as for clarification on "fps" that is "first person shooter" aka "battlefield" this is the only way fun with guns can happen "first person"..

i also really hope they give you the option to choose your own weapons. why shouldnt they.. what is the fun in getting things chosen for you?
preset loadouts.. pff.. that is a recepie for a bad game..
third person does not work for shooting because you would need to much auto aim wich in turn rips immersion out of you and stomps on it..

for anyone feeling they would not be able to compete in twitch based combat, well.. dont do it then..
drop supplies or play battle taxi instead. there would be a need for that too.

on exploring i really hope it will be strictly "first person" i hope you get a gun or two of your own choosing. and i hope you get to fire said gun at whatever you want when you want. i hope there will be animals to hunt and citys to explore..
i also really hope there will be combat zones and bounty hunting on planets in "first person"..

auto aiming third person games is .. try pvp in gta.. first to hit the aim button followed by the fire button wins. always! is that fun?
in battlefield you actually have to aim then fire. this is fun sucsessfull shooting action.

to all the old elite fans trying to make this game stay in the past. you should stay in your spaceships if you cant compete in fps combat. it's more fun for you..

to anyone trying to make this game be "third person". go play gta, wow or other third person games..

to anyone taking this post quoting it to edit in "IMO"'s all over and "there i fixed it for you", well.. you are on a list..

to FD. never implement third person in any mode form or way. it only serves to kill immersion and fast...

thats all..
let the flames flame. i got the flame suit on..

there are to many ... blah blah blah

You probably wouldn't need the flame suit had you not opened up your post with an insult. Also, fun is subjective, and there's no reason why there couldn't be a 1st and 3rd person perspective when it comes to characters.

There are too many people who think that insulting people is clever ,its not .Also why threaten people by saying "well.. you are on a list.." If you want people to listen to your views and even possibly a Dev to read them ,then why do that ?

Games have grown? So EVERY game has to have an fps element? That's ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure you can stay in the comfort of your (insert ship name here) and completely avoid all first person content. The FPS content will be only required if you wish to experience the content related to it. I don't think they're talking CoD or TF2 style of play yet so you should be able to relax.

I think that you misunderstood mate; It's more the physics mechanics, animations etc. that people want from that game for the people running around not the camera angle/position...

With a thousand other shooters out there, why oh why do you want this in elite?
FD made an awesome space game, and I (my selfish want) want them to keep working on that and not distracted by creating a whole new game just so I can shoot a person .. Frig the last thing I want is someone to board my ship .. And have to fight them using a hotas
It's like adding spaceship dogfighting to WOW....

This is the very thing turning me off of sc

I have been waiting for *this * game since I played privateer 20 years ago (I didn't know it should be called elite dangerous), 2 years ago I thought it would be star citizen.

There are so few good space flight Sims... Lets not ruin it

Edit: I don't want my tone to come off too negative, I just really have a strong opinion on this. I am not at all against landings, and walking around - just the whole fps on ships thing.

I am not sure how they can implement this without forcing it on everyone... It will be like having an unboardable ship if you don't buy the expansion. But I don't have all the answers

It will be a paid for expansion. You don't have to buy it.

The thing is though, this has been the plan since the 'Elite 4' days and it was definitely mentioned during the Kickstarter. Whether it actually makes it into the game is another discussion entirely, but it's definitely on the cards perhaps 2 or 3 years down the line.
