Newcomer / Intro Q: Naval progression in Sol and travelling there

Hello Commanders.

I now have my pass to Sol and I need to go there for further progression within the Federation. It's a long way away (for a newbie like me) and I wanted to get some info before heading over there.

1) Is there a time limit to do this? Does the offer ever expire?

2) Do NPC ships and expertise (level) improve nearer Sol? I can handle most of what I meet in Eravate (for example), but will I meet bigger/more powerful NPCs either in Sol or on the way there? - I'd like to take my Cobra, but if I run the risk of paying insurance every 2 minutes because I'm insta-killed by Eites in A-grade Vipers, I'll take my hauler.

3) I was thinking about heading in the other direction and grabbing some rares before heading back to Sol to sell them. Bad idea? I've neever tried rare trading and I'm in a D-class Cobra (only been playing 2 weeks so not yet had the credits to upgrade. Got nearly a mil in the bank now so next round of upgrades will come soon. When I know what the hell I'm doing with regards ship size/mass/upgradeability). Is the cargo space worth-while for rares, and am I likely to see it all go up in flames?

Thanks in advance for any wisdom you can share with me.

EDIT - Also, the same quest I accepted to get the pass to Sol now shows up on the bulletin board as unobtainable. It tells me that I have the pass already (which I know) and I'm not trusted by that faction enough. The missions don't seem to state which faction they're referring to. I only see that when I complete the mission and the reputation updates. Is that referring to the Fed or the faction in the system I'm in? Bit confused about this. Don't want to go all the way there and find I lost rep by shooting at a Fed ship by accident in combat.

I put on the Hawaii shirt, bought a new Sidewinder and made the trip (160ly) just recently.
I take it you're playing Solo? There is nothing to know or worry about. Apart from the occasional
fuel scoop it's one hyperdrive after hyperdrive. I had some interdiction attempts on the way,
but managed to jump out in time every time.

Hmm, ok. So I just wait for another mission to arrive I guess :)

Waiting will get you no where :)
Do missions for the minor factions aligned to Federation.
When you are allied with a minor, move on to the next.

Being aligned with several minor faction, speeds up the process.

I'm currently working on Empire rank, went up to Lord (6.th) rank in a few days doing that.

As far as your question about NPC ratings near Sol, I havent really noticed a difference. A dangerous ranked Cobra is still the same, same if you see a Python - Run if you cant take him ;) lol. But yeah I made the trip myself too, but didnt feel like doing more missions for fed, so went over to alliance space and working on them ;)

Rares trading...be careful with that. If you've been reading the Galnet you can see that the Federation has banned one of them. I cant remember its name but if you get caught, the fine will be unimaginably large

I noticed a Conda Security ship when I was in Sol, might just be a coincidence, they do occur other places too.

That sounds like you're speaking of Onionhead. Are you sure it is illegal? I thought rares are legal to carry around everywhere and you just cannot sell them if they are not allowed.

I haven't noticed type of ship and pilot rank scale depending on what type of system and where/how near the capital it is.

Pretty much the same mix everywhere as far as I can see.

And yes those rank missions that tell you to go to X for further instructions are dead ends for both Feds and Empire.

OT slightly - I have no idea why I have a permit for Sol as I am with the Empire and the farthest I got with the Feds was Ensign, don't think it was a Mercenary Edition perk ??

Roger that. I'm on 69% with one faction. I'll work on getting that to 100%. Thanks!

Ok, good to know. I'll probably take my Cobra and go and visit home :)

I see it listed as illegal in Fed stations.

Well, that was a short career in the Navy! Guess I'll get back to smuggling and slaving...

Thanks for the answers everyone.

By dead end I meant those particular missions ie going to Sol etc won't lead to a follow on. You will still have the opportunity to do further ranking missions.

Yeah, If you have a cobra youll be good. And unless you manage to off the feds, you will be fine with security. And with the OnionHead Rares, thats what I thought too. That in the GalNet the Federation stated they will not allow onionhead in their territory. Which says to me if you get scanned, you are screwed. But I havent traded rares yet so I could be 100% wrong lol - but now that I have a cobra I think I might try and find a decent rares route - was the average per full load of rares that you can pull in?

I haven't tried yet myself. I hear it's quite a lot.

I'm going to head to Sol tomorrow anyway. Got to be done I think :) Gonna take the Cobra and maybe do a bit of exploring around that area.

Go visit the starport on Earth's moon for a bit of space luxury...

Onionhead... the way it worked before with illegal rares (such as Wolf Fesh) is that it may be illegal in a starport but that only meant you couldn't sell it in the normal commodities market (had to Black Market sell it). It may be illegal but it's not stolen. I don't know if this onionhead issue is different though. I've yet to even see onionhead, let alone get caught with it.

I finished a rares run and still had unsold but not listed cargo. I went into the black market and sold it there.:)

Illegal cargo will get you fined whether or not you own it.
