Seriously, I've tried to slingshot around several suns-in Super-cruise-but I just can't seem to travel to the latter half of the twentieth century. Terrible shame, too, as I was hoping to have a whale of a time once I got there .

What you actually need for time travelling is popcorn in a non-microwaveable metal container, a microwave oven and a supernova.
Since none of that is yet implemented in ED, I guess you're out of luck.
